Then test DNS and outbound connectivity from the VPS and inspect its operating-system firewall and route. Contabo describes its network firewall as filtering inbound traffic while leaving outbound traffic unrestricted, so an enabled Contabo firewall alone does not establish why an outbound handshake failed. The available information does not prove an India-specific restriction or identify the cause on any particular VPS.
What an RTMPS handshake failure means
RTMPS is RTMP carried through TLS. Before YouTube can receive the stream, the encoder must reach the correct ingestion endpoint and establish TLS successfully. Google specifies port 443 and requires the server hostname in the TLS SNI extension for authentication. A successful TCP connection alone does not prove that TLS, the RTMP session, or the stream key is valid. Google’s RTMPS ingestion guide
Keep the failure stage in view: a certificate or SSL error points first to endpoint, TLS, or SNI details; a timeout points toward reachability, DNS, guest egress rules, or routing. If the stream reaches Live Control Room but has poor health, that is a later encoding or capacity problem, not necessarily a handshake failure.
Check the endpoint and stream key first
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and its stream settings. Copy the RTMPS URL, not the ordinary RTMP URL. YouTube notes that the default displayed URL may be RTMP; confirm the encoder supports RTMPS. Preserve the exact hostname and path rather than substituting an IP address or reconstructing the URL.
- Copy the current stream key from the same control room. Do not include it in logs, screenshots, or a support request. A key problem can prevent a valid RTMP session, but it does not explain a TLS handshake that fails before that session begins.
- Check the encoder’s connection fields. The scheme must be
rtmps, the destination must use YouTube’s supplied host and path, the destination port must be 443, and the TLS client must send the supplied hostname as SNI. Consult YouTube’s RTMPS setup guidance if the encoder offers a separate RTMPS setting or URL field.
Test connectivity from the VPS
Run checks from the same VPS and operating-system environment as the encoder. A test from your home computer does not establish that the server can reach the endpoint.

- Resolve the copied hostname. Confirm DNS returns addresses rather than a lookup error. Record the hostname, returned addresses, and test time.
- Check TCP port 443. A timeout or refusal helps distinguish basic reachability trouble from a later TLS error, but a successful port check does not validate SNI, the certificate, the RTMP path, or the key.
- Test TLS using the hostname, not only an IP. Make sure the diagnostic client uses the copied hostname for SNI and validates the certificate. If TCP connects but TLS fails, inspect the hostname, port, certificate chain, server clock, and TLS diagnostic before changing firewall rules. Connecting by IP or omitting SNI can fail authentication even when TCP connectivity works.
- Compare the diagnostic with the encoder error. Save timestamps and exact, sanitized output. Do not share the stream key.
These are diagnostic checks based on YouTube’s documented connection requirements; no test of a particular Contabo India VPS is established here.
Inspect guest firewall rules and routing
Contabo describes its VPS/VDS network firewall as controlling incoming connections, with outbound traffic unrestricted. That does not rule out an outbound block inside the guest operating system or a routing problem. Check the local policy and routing table; do not open inbound ports as a fix for an outbound connection initiated by the VPS. - Linux: inspect the active UFW, nftables, or iptables policy for outbound TCP 443 and DNS. Check whether the default outbound policy or a specific rule blocks the encoder.
- Windows: inspect Windows Defender Firewall and any other local security policy for the encoder’s outbound connections and DNS.
- Routing: review the route used to reach the resolved destination. If results suggest an unstable or suspect provider route, collect traceroute or MTR output and test times for Contabo support. Contabo’s connectivity guidance

After connection succeeds: separate stream health from TLS
Once YouTube receives the stream, check the encoder and Live Control Room health indicators. Review bitrate, resolution, codec, keyframe interval, CPU load, and the VPS’s available outbound capacity against YouTube’s encoder guidance. YouTube recommends keeping 20% spare upload capacity beyond the stream bitrate, counting both primary and backup streams where used. What to send support if checks do not resolve it
- For a possible route issue, give Contabo the test timestamps, destination hostname and resolved IP, VPS location, TCP 443 results, and traceroute or MTR output.
- For an encoder-specific issue, provide the encoder name and version plus the exact error with credentials and stream key removed.
- State which stage fails: DNS resolution, TCP connection, TLS certificate/handshake, or stream ingestion. This narrows the investigation without exposing the key.
The available documentation establishes YouTube’s connection requirements and Contabo’s described firewall direction; it does not establish the VPS operating system, encoder, actual URL, guest firewall policy, DNS response, route, or provider-side state. Treat the India location as context, not proof of a regional block.
