A “connection refused” error means the connection is being rejected before the stream is established; it does not, by itself, prove that YouTube is down, your stream key is invalid, or a provider is blocking a port. First identify where your encoder is connecting, then verify the current YouTube ingest URL and transport, and test each network leg separately if your VPS runs an RTMP relay.

Start by locating the failed connection

Find the destination configured in OBS, FFmpeg, or another encoder. Is it YouTube’s ingest server, or an RTMP server running on your VPS? NGINX’s RTMP module can provide an RTMP server and relay streams, among other streaming functions (NGINX RTMP module).

  • Direct publishing: The encoder connects from the VPS to YouTube. Check that outbound connection and the encoder’s destination settings.
  • Using a relay: The encoder first connects to the relay, which then connects to YouTube. Treat these as two independent connections: encoder-to-relay and relay-to-YouTube. A successful first leg does not confirm that the relay can publish to YouTube.

Record the exact error and the stage where it occurs. “Connection refused,” a timeout, a TLS or certificate error, and dropped frames describe different failure modes; changing encoder quality settings will not fix every one of them.

Use YouTube’s current RTMPS destination

  1. Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and find the stream’s connection settings. Copy the ingest URL and stream key from the same stream configuration.
  2. Explicitly select the lock-marked RTMPS URL if the interface initially shows an ordinary RTMP URL. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which carries RTMP through TLS (YouTube Help: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions).
  3. Check the complete destination: protocol, hostname, application path, and port. YouTube’s RTMPS requirements specify the rtmps protocol, a valid YouTube RTMPS ingestion server and application path, and port 443 (Delivering Live YouTube Content via RTMPS).
  4. Use the hostname, not just an IP address, so the TLS connection can provide the server name indication (SNI) YouTube requires. Confirm that your client establishes TLS; opening a TCP connection to port 443 alone is not proof that RTMPS is working.
  5. Keep the stream key private. If the configured key or URL may have been exposed, replace it through YouTube’s stream settings rather than sharing it in logs or support messages.

Do not rely on a remembered hostname, a URL copied from another stream, or the default RTMP URL when you intend to use RTMPS. Check for the right application path as well as the host and port; a plausible-looking hostname with an incorrect path can still fail.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Test outbound reachability and firewall policy

From the VPS, test the exact destination and port configured for the failing connection using a suitable TCP/TLS diagnostic. For RTMPS, check both TCP reachability and whether a TLS handshake succeeds with the intended hostname and SNI. If you use a relay, run the checks from the relay host for its YouTube-facing connection; testing from the encoder alone does not test that leg.

  • Inspect the Linux host firewall’s outbound rules for the relevant destination and port.
  • Inspect the VPS provider’s network firewall or egress controls for the same flow.
  • Allow only the required outbound traffic. Do not open unrelated inbound ports as a substitute for fixing an outbound connection.

A refusal can come from the configured destination or an intermediate service; a timeout can indicate that a connection attempt is not receiving a timely response. Neither message alone establishes that a particular VPS provider blocks YouTube. The available details do not identify your distribution, provider policy, firewall rules, URL, or logs, so verify the actual path before changing network rules.

Match the error to the stage of failure

What you see Likely stage to inspect Next check
Connection refused before streaming starts TCP connection to the configured destination or an intermediate service Confirm the host and port, identify whether the destination is YouTube or a relay, and inspect outbound firewall and provider policy.
Timeout or “failed to connect to server” Connection setup or network path Recheck the current URL and port, then test reachability from the host initiating that connection. YouTube’s encoder troubleshooting guidance identifies a wrong URL or missing RTMPS support among possible causes.
TLS or certificate error TLS handshake, hostname, or SNI Confirm you selected RTMPS, use the correct hostname and port 443, and verify the client sends the hostname through SNI.
Connection succeeds but the stream will not publish RTMP handshake or publish configuration Recheck the application path and stream key against the same Live Control Room stream settings.
Stream starts, then drops frames or disconnects intermittently Stream stability after connection Check network stability and whether the configured bitrate is sustainable. OBS describes dropped frames and intermittent disconnections as network issues between the computer and remote ingest server (OBS Project: Stream Connection Troubleshooting).

These are diagnostic directions, not proof of a particular cause. For a relay setup, apply the same stage-by-stage reasoning independently to each leg.

Check encoder settings after the connection works

Resolution, bitrate, and keyframe settings affect stream compatibility and quality, but they are not the first explanation for a TCP connection refusal. Once the encoder connects and publishes, use YouTube’s guidance for your chosen resolution and frame rate. YouTube recommends RTMP or RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval; the interval should not exceed four seconds (YouTube encoder settings).

Test with representative audio and motion, then monitor stream health in YouTube’s live interface. A static or low-motion test may not reveal problems that appear during the actual programme.

Common troubleshooting mistakes

  • Treating every error as a bad stream key: A TCP refusal happens before YouTube can validate a published stream. Check the connection stage first; verify the key when the connection reaches the publish stage.
  • Testing only the encoder when a relay is involved: The relay has its own outbound connection to YouTube. Diagnose both legs.
  • Using RTMPS in name only: A URL or port that looks right does not establish TLS. Confirm the actual protocol negotiation and SNI hostname.
  • Changing bitrate to fix a refusal: Bitrate matters to stream stability after connecting, not to whether the initial TCP connection is accepted.
  • Assuming a provider-wide block from one failed attempt: Verify the destination, host firewall, provider egress policy, and exact error before concluding that the provider is responsible.
