YouTube expanded five Premium features on September 29, 2025: playback speeds up to 4x, high-quality music audio up to 256 kbps, Jump Ahead on TVs and consoles, Smart Downloads for Shorts on iPhone, and Shorts picture-in-picture on iPhone. Several were previously experiments or limited-platform features rather than five brand-new products, and availability still depends on country, device, app version, content and account. Here is what each does, how to find it and whether it materially improves a Premium subscription.
TechRadar’s September 2025 report covered the rollout; YouTube’s January 2025 announcement introduced several of the capabilities as experiments or expansions.

YouTube warns that Premium benefits can be limited by territory, plan, device and content type. The current Premium Help page is the best check for your account.
1. Playback speeds up to 4x
Premium users can manually choose speeds as high as 4x on supported mobile experiences, above YouTube’s familiar 2x ceiling. That is useful for revising a lecture, scanning a tutorial you already understand, or getting through a long podcast or news report.

How to select a speed
- Open a video in the YouTube mobile app.
- Tap the video, then tap Settings.
- Choose Playback speed.
- Select a rate up to 4x if the control is offered.
This manual control is different from Auto speed. YouTube currently documents Auto speed as Android-only, English-only and unavailable for Shorts, premieres, live streams, music, movies and shows. At very high speeds, speech comprehension can deteriorate, so 4x is a navigation tool rather than an ideal setting for every subject.
2. High-quality audio up to 256 kbps
For eligible music videos and Art Tracks, Premium can provide audio at up to 256 kbps. It is not a 256-kbps setting for every YouTube upload, and it does not upgrade a low-quality source into a higher-quality master.
Set audio quality on a phone
- Open your profile in YouTube.
- Select Settings, then Quality.
- Under Audio quality, choose High when available.
Set it on a TV or living-room device
- Open the video and select Settings.
- Choose Audio.
- Select High-quality audio if the option appears.
The original upload, network conditions, Bluetooth processing, headphones or speakers and listening environment all affect what you hear. A 256-kbps ceiling is therefore a technical maximum for eligible content, not a promise that every listener will notice a dramatic change.
3. Jump Ahead reaches TVs, streaming devices and consoles
Jump Ahead uses aggregate viewing behavior to suggest a point that many viewers reach after skipping an introduction, pause or other low-viewed section. The September rollout extended it beyond earlier web and mobile availability to supported smart-TV, streaming-device and game-console apps.

Using Jump Ahead
- Computer: Hover over or double-click the progress bar; YouTube may display the Jump Ahead control. YouTube’s Help page also lists keyboard methods for macOS and Windows.
- TV, streamer or console: Press the remote’s right arrow. If a Jump Ahead marker appears, press right again and confirm with Enter or OK.
The marker may not appear on every video. Current documentation excludes Shorts, premieres, live streams and content such as music, movies and shows, and lists support for selected languages including English, Spanish, French, German, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Hindi, Arabic, Chinese, Thai and Turkish. Because the feature follows audience behavior rather than editorial judgment, it can skip context that matters to you.
4. Smart Downloads for Shorts on iPhone
Smart Downloads can automatically select recommended Shorts and place them in YouTube’s offline library, giving an iPhone user something to watch during a flight or a poor-connection commute without saving each clip manually. YouTube describes Smart Downloads generally as automatic recommendations added for offline viewing or listening.
What to expect
- Downloads consume phone storage and recommendations may not match your interests.
- Clips remain inside YouTube’s supported offline experience; they are not ordinary files you can export or edit.
- Licensing, account status and periodic reconnection requirements can affect offline availability.
- Use YouTube’s Smart Downloads controls and the Downloads area to manage or remove saved Shorts if storage becomes an issue.
5. Picture-in-picture for Shorts on iPhone
The rollout expanded Shorts picture-in-picture on iOS, allowing a floating player to remain visible while you use another app or respond to a message. YouTube’s January announcement treated the capability as an iOS experiment; the September coverage described it as part of the broader rollout.
There is an important current-status change: YouTube’s Help Center now says picture-in-picture for non-music long-form videos and Shorts is available to all users on iOS and Android in supported configurations. PiP for music content remains a Premium benefit. Consequently, Shorts PiP should not be presented as universally Premium-exclusive; country, app version, account and content eligibility still matter.

Are these five features worth paying for?
Best fit: tutorial, lecture and podcast viewers
Manual high-speed playback is the clearest benefit if you regularly consume spoken-word material. Jump Ahead also helps with long videos, especially when watching on a television.
Best fit: music listeners
The high-quality setting is relevant if you listen to eligible music through capable headphones or speakers and have a connection that can sustain it. YouTube Premium also includes YouTube Music Premium, which may matter more than the 256-kbps option itself.
Best fit: travelers and commuters
Offline downloads are a core Premium advantage, and automatic Shorts recommendations add convenience when you do not want to curate clips manually. The trade-off is storage use and less control over exactly what is saved.
Best fit: heavy TV users
Jump Ahead’s expansion to living-room devices can remove repetitive introductions and pauses without manual scrubbing. It is helpful, but its suggestions are probabilistic and video-specific.

Weak fit: occasional viewers
If you mainly want occasional ad removal, never use YouTube Music, do not download videos and already have the PiP behavior you need, these five incremental additions alone are unlikely to justify a subscription. The broader Premium package still centers on ad-free viewing, background play, downloads and YouTube Music Premium, as documented by YouTube.
Other subscriptions and bundles
Music-first users may prefer Spotify Premium, Apple Music or Amazon Music Unlimited. Check Google One’s YouTube Premium offer if you also need cloud storage; YouTube announced a U.S. bundle beginning January 22, 2025, but eligibility and pricing must be confirmed at checkout. YouTube’s signup page likewise does not establish one universal price: billing country, channel and account determine the current offer. YouTube Premium Lite, where offered, has different benefits and should not be assumed to include these five features.

- Update YouTube or YouTube Music from your device’s app store.
- Confirm that the account signed in is the account with Premium.
- Check country, plan, operating system and device eligibility.
- Look in the relevant Playback speed, Quality, Audio or Downloads menu.
- If the capability was announced as an experiment, check youtube.com/new as well as normal settings.
- Restart the app; if necessary, sign out and back in.
If Jump Ahead does not appear
The video may be a Short, livestream, premiere, music video, movie or show; it may lack enough viewing data; or your language, device or rollout may not qualify.
If high-quality audio sounds unchanged
Confirm that the track is eligible and the setting is High, not Auto. A lower-quality source upload, Bluetooth compression, modest speakers or environmental noise can hide differences.

If Smart Downloads use too much storage
Manage or disable Smart Downloads and delete clips from YouTube’s Downloads area. Treat the feature as temporary offline access, not an archive.
If Shorts PiP fails
Check the operating system’s PiP permission and YouTube’s PiP setting, then test eligible content. Do not assume Premium is required for non-music Shorts, because current YouTube documentation describes that access for all users on iOS and Android in supported configurations.
What changed—and what did not
The September 2025 announcement is best understood as an availability and platform-parity rollout. Playback acceleration, higher-quality audio, Jump Ahead, Smart Downloads and Shorts PiP had already appeared as experiments, Android features or limited-platform benefits. Other 2025 Premium announcements, such as Conversational AI and Ask Music expansion, are separate and are not part of these five.
The Bottom Line
These updates make YouTube Premium more convenient rather than transforming it into a different service. The strongest reasons to subscribe remain ad-free viewing, background play, offline downloads and YouTube Music Premium; 4x playback, TV Jump Ahead and automatic Shorts downloads add meaningful value for heavy users, while Shorts PiP may already be available free depending on your account and location.
