What Is Freely? Release Date, BBC iPlayer, ITVX and Freeview Explained

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Freely is a UK free-to-view television platform delivered over broadband. Launched by Everyone TV on 30 April 2024, it combines live channels, programme search, an electronic programme guide and links to broadcaster players on compatible televisions and streaming devices. It can remove the need for an aerial for Freely streaming, but it does not replace BBC iPlayer, ITVX, Freeview or their separate account and licensing arrangements.

As of 2026, Freely is available in selected televisions and through supported plug-in devices. Compatibility is model-specific, so an ordinary smart TV or streaming stick cannot automatically run it.

What exactly is Freely?

Freely is an internet-protocol television (IPTV) service for UK viewers. It is operated by Everyone TV, the organisation behind Freeview and Freesat, and backed by the BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5. The platform brings together:

  • Live television delivered through broadband;
  • programme discovery and search;
  • a unified electronic programme guide; and
  • links into broadcaster on-demand players.

Freely itself has no monthly subscription. You still need compatible hardware, broadband and, where the law requires it, a TV Licence. Details are set out in Freely’s service overview and equipment guidance.

When did Freely launch?

Freely was first announced as a planned public-service broadcasting collaboration, then launched publicly on 30 April 2024. Its initial form was software integrated into selected smart TVs. The later expansion is about access through plug-in streaming hardware, not a new 2026 launch. Everyone TV announced streaming devices in 2025, with the broader device rollout described in its 2026 product information.

The launch date and broadcaster partnership are documented in ITV’s launch announcement; the earlier plan appears in its pre-launch announcement.

How does Freely work?

A Freely television or supported streamer connects to your home network. Live channels arrive over the internet rather than solely through a terrestrial aerial or satellite dish. The interface can show what is live, find programmes and open the appropriate broadcaster service for catch-up or on-demand viewing.

This is an integrated front door, not one universal video library. Rights, regional services and catalogue availability remain controlled by each broadcaster. A programme listed in the guide may open BBC iPlayer, ITVX, Channel 4, 5 or another player instead of playing entirely inside Freely.

Is BBC iPlayer available on Freely?

Yes, BBC live channels and BBC on-demand programmes are surfaced through the Freely experience. For on-demand viewing, BBC iPlayer remains the relevant BBC service. You may need to open or authenticate the iPlayer app and sign in to a BBC account when prompted.

Therefore, “BBC iPlayer is available through Freely” is a reasonable user description; “Freely replaces BBC iPlayer” is not. A TV Licence is required for BBC iPlayer, including on-demand use. See Freely’s setup guidance, player-login guidance and licence explanation.

Is ITVX included?

ITV is one of Freely’s founding broadcasters. ITV live channels and ITV programmes can be discovered through Freely, while on-demand viewing may open ITVX. An ITVX account or login can still be required for particular programmes or features, and Freely does not guarantee access to every ITVX title. Rights windows, regional rules and the ITVX catalogue can change.

What about Channel 4 and Channel 5?

Channel 4 and Channel 5 are also part of the broadcaster group behind Freely. Their live services and programmes can appear in the Freely guide, but relevant on-demand viewing may continue in the Channel 4 or 5 player. Freely is not a replacement account for each broadcaster’s app.

The launch description is available from ITV, while Freely explains the player relationship in its setup FAQ.

Does Freely replace Freeview?

No. The two services are operated within the same wider organisation but use different primary delivery methods.

Feature Freely Freeview / Freeview Play
Main delivery method Broadband/IPTV Terrestrial aerial, with internet for Freeview Play features
Aerial required No for Freely streaming Yes for normal live Freeview reception
Satellite dish required No No
Live TV Yes, subject to device, location and channel availability Yes, subject to aerial coverage and reception
On-demand Freely discovery plus broadcaster players Freeview Play and separate players on compatible equipment
Hardware Freely-enabled TV or supported streamer Freeview-compatible TV, recorder or set-top box
Main vulnerability Broadband, Wi-Fi or service outage Aerial, transmitter coverage or aerial condition
Best fit Homes without usable aerial access but with reliable broadband Homes with good aerial reception and existing Freeview equipment

Government material describes Freeview as continuing while internet-delivered distribution develops; Freely has not already replaced it. See the official Freely comparison and Freeview explanation.

Do you need an aerial or satellite dish?

No aerial or dish is needed for the internet-delivered Freely service. This makes it useful for rooms without an aerial socket, homes with weak terrestrial reception, rented properties where installing a dish is impractical and second-room televisions.

A compatible Freely television can still use an aerial as an optional additional reception method. Removing the aerial requirement does not remove the need for a dependable internet connection. Freely explains the two connection methods at connect internet and aerial.

What equipment and broadband do you need?

Compatible television

A Freely-enabled TV includes the service in its software, often with a dedicated Freely button or entry point. Check the exact model before buying; brand names and operating systems alone do not establish support. Freely’s current guidance says the service is not built into Samsung or LG televisions, so owners of those sets may need a supported streamer. See how to get Freely and the Samsung and LG guidance.

Plug-in streamer

A supported device can add Freely to an existing television. It needs an HDMI input, mains power and broadband through Wi-Fi or, where supported, Ethernet. As of the 2026 expansion, official Freely material names the Netgem PLEIO and Manhattan AERO. The AERO is described as a 4K device with more than 70 live channels; that figure applies to that product description, not every Freely installation. The PLEIO also advertises cloud gaming, which requires a separate subscription.

See the dated streaming-device information. Freely is not automatically installable on a generic Android TV, Fire TV Stick, Roku, Apple TV or unsupported smart TV.

Broadband speed

  • Freely recommends at least 10 Mbps for live and on-demand viewing.
  • For 4K/UHD, it recommends at least 40 Mbps.
  • Wi-Fi strength, household traffic, router placement and congestion can affect playback even when a speed test meets those recommendations.

These are platform recommendations, not guarantees of stable playback in every home. See Freely’s connection advice and its 4K/UHD guidance.

How to set up Freely

  1. Buy a Freely-enabled television or officially supported streamer.
  2. Connect the TV or device to mains power and, for a streamer, connect it to the TV’s HDMI port.
  3. Join your broadband network using Wi-Fi or Ethernet where available.
  4. Follow the on-screen setup process.
  5. Choose your location and enter your postcode when requested.
  6. If the television is also connected to an aerial, run a channel scan.
  7. Open the relevant broadcaster player for on-demand programmes.
  8. Sign in to BBC iPlayer, ITVX, Channel 4, 5 or another player when prompted.

After setup, supported live channels should play through broadband, the Freely guide should be searchable and broadcaster players should be launchable from programme listings. The official sequence is covered in Freely’s setup FAQ.

What does Freely cost?

There is no Freely monthly subscription. “Free” does not mean cost-free: you may need to buy a compatible television or streamer, pay for broadband and hold a TV Licence for live television or BBC iPlayer. Broadband data may count against a metered allowance. Other apps accessible from the device can charge for subscriptions, rentals or extra features. Current hardware prices vary by model and retailer and are not fixed by the Freely service.

For the legal position, Freely’s licence explainer links the relevant rules. In general, a licence is required to watch or record live television on any service and to use BBC iPlayer. Watching only qualifying on-demand content on services such as ITVX or Channel 4 may not require one if you do not watch live TV or BBC iPlayer.

Who is Freely best for?

Freely is a strong fit when:

  • your broadband is reliable but aerial reception is poor or unavailable;
  • a second-room television has no aerial socket;
  • you are buying a new TV and can verify official model compatibility;
  • you want live UK television and catch-up discovery in one interface; or
  • you want to keep an HDMI television and add a supported streamer.

Freeview may suit you better when:

  • broadband is unreliable, metered or unavailable;
  • you already have good aerial reception and working Freeview equipment;
  • live television must continue during an internet outage;
  • you do not want to replace the TV or add another device; or
  • a required channel is available terrestrially but not on your particular Freely device or regional configuration.

Current channels and regional availability

Do not rely on a permanent universal channel count. Availability can vary by device, postcode, regional service and platform update; some entries are live channels while others are player destinations or on-demand services. Check the official Freely channel directory for the current line-up before buying. Freely is a UK service built around UK broadcaster rights and TV-licensing rules, so overseas availability should not be assumed.

What to do when Freely does not work

  1. Check that the router is online and test another device on the same Wi-Fi.
  2. Run a speed test; Freely recommends at least 10 Mbps.
  3. Improve the Wi-Fi signal or use Ethernet if the hardware supports it.
  4. Restart the router and television or streamer.
  5. Install available device software updates.
  6. If only one player fails, check its login details and reset the password through that broadcaster.
  7. Check Freely service alerts and the player-specific help pages.
  8. Contact the television or streaming-device manufacturer if the hardware setup itself fails.

Relevant support pages include login troubleshooting and player failure guidance.

The bottom line

Freely is best understood as a broadband-based UK free-TV platform launched on 30 April 2024. It can provide live television without an aerial and make BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5 content easier to find, but broadcaster apps, accounts, rights and the TV Licence still matter. Choose it when reliable broadband and compatible hardware solve a real aerial problem; keep Freeview or another aerial-based option when outage-proof live reception is the priority.
