Yes, the redesign was real—but it is not new August 2026 news. YouTube Music began rolling out a redesigned Now Playing screen in late August and early September 2023, adding a comments surface connected to YouTube’s existing comment system. The exact controls and layout may look different in 2026 because YouTube Music has continued changing its player.
What changed in the 2023 redesign?
The mobile redesign, reported for Android and iOS, reorganized the listening screen around a larger album image with more rounded corners, left-aligned track information and a row of pill-shaped actions. Depending on the item and account, the player made controls such as Like, Dislike, Comments, Save or add to playlist, Share, Download and Radio easier to reach. Song and video switching remained available, while additional commands stayed in the overflow menu. 9to5Google documented the rollout and its comments addition.
The intent was practical: put more actions near the lower part of the screen instead of requiring repeated taps on artwork or menus. The trade-off is a busier, more engagement-focused player. A later YouTube Music Community thread contains user complaints that another Now Playing redesign made discovery and queue-related sections harder to find; those comments are user feedback, not an official description of Google’s design goals.
How YouTube comments work in Music
Comments are not a separate, universal YouTube Music discussion forum. They belong to the underlying YouTube content associated with what is playing. That may be an official audio, music video, live performance, remix, lyric video, podcast episode or user upload. Consequently, two versions of the same song can show different threads—or one can have no usable thread at all.

For eligible content, YouTube’s help documentation says users may read comments, expand the panel, like or dislike comments, reply, and publish, edit or delete their own comments. Posted comments are public in the relevant YouTube context and remain subject to creator controls, moderation and account restrictions.
Comments can be unavailable when the owner disables them, limits participation, the item is private or otherwise ineligible, or the account cannot comment. Availability is therefore a property of both the content and the account—not a guarantee attached to every catalog “song.”

Where to find the comments panel
- Open YouTube Music and start a song, video, podcast or other potentially eligible item.
- Tap or click the mini-player to open the full Now Playing view.
- Look for Comments, a comments preview or a comments-related control. Labels and placement vary by player version.
- Expand the panel to read, react, reply or post when those actions are enabled.
The official Android and iPhone/iPad guidance covers viewing and posting comments in YouTube Music. Desktop layouts should not be assumed to match the 2023 mobile redesign. If the panel is missing, open the associated item in the regular YouTube watch page; that often makes it clear whether a thread exists for that particular upload.
Why you may not see it
- Staged UI rollout: the 2023 release was gradual, so users on the same operating system could see different screens.
- A later player design: current YouTube Music may have moved or merged controls shown in older screenshots.
- Content differences: an official audio and its music video can map to different YouTube pages and comment threads.
- Owner restrictions: comments may be disabled, held or limited.
- Account restrictions: sign-in, age, policy or other account limits can prevent posting even when reading is available.
For practical troubleshooting, update YouTube Music, force-close and reopen it, try a well-known public official video, verify the active Google account, and compare the item with its YouTube watch page. These steps cannot override a server-side rollout or an owner’s comment settings. Persistent problems can be reported through YouTube Music’s Help & feedback option.

Rollout history and the 2026 context
Testing was reported in June 2023, followed by wider reports around August 30–September 1. The contemporary coverage specifically identified Android and iOS. TeamYouTube subsequently continued publishing feature roundups in late 2023 and 2024, so the player shown in a 2023 article is historical reference rather than a guaranteed current specification.
That distinction matters when reading the headline “YouTube Music rolls out Now Playing redesign with YT comments.” It describes a genuine 2023 product change, not a newly announced August 2026 feature. The comments capability remains documented, but its appearance, placement and reach can vary by platform, account, content type and later UI experiments.

Is the redesign useful?
It is useful if you want reactions and discussion without leaving playback, particularly for music videos and podcasts. It is less attractive if you want a minimal, music-only interface: more controls and a social panel add visual clutter, and comments can load extra content on a weak connection. It also should not be treated as a universal song-comment browser, because the discussion follows a specific YouTube upload.

YouTube Music does not document a universal setting to disable the comments surface. You can collapse or ignore it where the current player permits, or use a service designed around a simpler music-first workflow if social content is not useful to you.
