Google’s reported plan for a standalone YouTube Music app on Apple TV has not been publicly confirmed as a launch. The Garmin part did happen: Garmin announced YouTube Music for compatible watches through its Connect IQ Store on June 12, 2024. Today, Google directs TV users to the regular YouTube app’s Music section or to casting—not a separate YouTube Music app for living-room devices.
What Google was reported to be planning
On June 6, 2023, 9to5Google reported, citing a source familiar with the matter, that Google was considering a broader expansion of YouTube Music beyond phones and the web. The reported plans included a standalone Apple TV app, improved third-party integrations such as Sonos, expanded HomePod support, and a Garmin smartwatch app. The story also raised possible additional wearable apps, improvements to Apple Watch, and better remote-control features from Wear OS watches.
This was a sourced report, not a Google product announcement. Google declined to comment at the time, so the reported ideas should not be treated as confirmed commitments. The subsequent outcomes have also differed by platform:

| Reported feature | What is documented now |
|---|---|
| YouTube Music on Garmin | Launched in the Connect IQ Store for compatible watches in June 2024. |
| Standalone Apple TV app | Google’s current help documentation does not list a standalone YouTube Music app for living-room devices. |
| HomePod, more wearables, Apple Watch improvements | These appeared in the 2023 report; they should not be read as confirmed launches based on that report alone. |
| Sonos | YouTube Music is supported through Sonos, but the reported prospect of improved integrations was not itself a formal product announcement. |
Garmin: the plan that became a product
Garmin announced YouTube Music availability on June 12, 2024, through its Connect IQ Store. The app supports music and podcast playback, including offline listening on supported watches. “Compatible Garmin smartwatch” matters: the announcement does not mean that every Garmin watch with music storage can run the app, and supported models or features can change.

Check your watch before relying on it
- Open Garmin Connect IQ on the phone paired with your watch.
- Select your watch and search for YouTube Music.
- Open the app listing and check its compatible-device list for your exact model.
- Confirm that the watch has the required storage, connectivity, and software support for the features you want.
- Install the app, open it on the watch, and follow its account-authentication prompts.
- Pair Bluetooth headphones or earbuds if you want to listen directly from the watch, then test playback before leaving your phone behind.
Do not assume that controlling music on a phone and storing music on a watch are the same thing. Phone control relies on the phone for playback; watch-based listening depends on the watch, app, and account supporting the relevant playback or download feature. For offline downloads, treat YouTube Music Premium as required unless the current app listing and setup explicitly say otherwise. Requirements and behavior can vary by watch and app revision. Google’s device guidance for Wear OS describes streaming and offline playback on that platform, but it is not proof that every Garmin model has identical capabilities.
If the app does not appear for your watch, update Garmin Connect, Connect IQ, and the watch software, then check the listing with the correct device selected. If it installs but authentication fails, verify the Google account and connection, and try signing in again. For a purchase decision, confirm Connect IQ compatibility before buying a watch specifically for YouTube Music. Spotify, Deezer, and Amazon Music are alternatives in Garmin’s music ecosystem, but their availability also depends on the watch model and their own account requirements.

Apple TV: use YouTube or cast
Google’s YouTube Music help page says the YouTube Music app is not available on living-room devices. Its documented TV route is through the regular YouTube app: open YouTube, sign in to the Google account associated with your music, and choose Music from the left-side menu if that section is available. Google’s TV guidance describes personalized YouTube Music content inside YouTube, not a separate native music client.
You can also start playback in YouTube Music on a phone, tablet, or browser and use a compatible casting destination. AirPlay may be an option in supported setups; the available controls depend on the app, device, and software. If casting does not find the destination, check that the devices can see one another on the network and review local-network permissions on iOS. Exact menu names and availability can vary by region and app version.

So, the careful answer is not that YouTube Music content is entirely unavailable on Apple TV. Rather, Google’s current documentation does not list or support a standalone YouTube Music app for living-room devices; the documented options are YouTube’s Music section or casting. The 2023 Apple TV plan has not been publicly confirmed as launched. That is not proof that Google formally canceled it.
If the Music section or your library is missing
- Check that YouTube is signed in to the same Google account you use for YouTube Music.
- Update the YouTube app and check whether the Music section is available in your region and app version.
- For casting, confirm the phone and receiving device are connected to a network that allows device discovery; check iOS local-network permission if applicable.
- Make sure you are looking for the YouTube app, not confusing YouTube Music with YouTube TV, a separate service.
A YouTube Music subscription does not create a standalone Apple TV app. Google says applicable YouTube Premium benefits work through the YouTube app on supported TVs, streaming devices, and game consoles, but the TV experience remains distinct from the mobile music app. Offline and background playback are described as mobile-app benefits in Google’s device guidance; podcast ads may still occur even for Premium members.

HomePod and other Apple devices are separate questions
The 2023 report bundled several different platform possibilities, but progress on one does not establish support on another. Apple TV is a television app experience; HomePod involves voice commands and music-service integration; Apple Watch is a wearable app and offline-storage question; Garmin uses Connect IQ. The reported HomePod and Apple Watch possibilities should not be presented as part of the Garmin launch or as confirmation of a native Apple TV app.

If you already use YouTube Music, the practical choice is usually to keep using it where its current support is documented: the YouTube app or casting on a TV, and Connect IQ on a compatible Garmin watch. If a direct TV app or watch support is essential, check the competing service’s current device compatibility and subscription terms before switching.
Best Value
- Easy-to-use running watch monitors heart rate (this is not a medical device) at the wrist and uses GPS to track how far, how fast and where you’ve run.Special Feature:Bluetooth.
- Battery life: up to 2 weeks in smartwatch mode; up to 20 hours in GPS mode
- Plan your race day strategy with the PacePro feature (not compatible with on-device courses), which offers GPS-based pace guidance for a selected course or distance

- Track all the ways you move with built-in activity profiles for running, cycling, track run, virtual run, pool swim, Pilates, HIIT, breathwork and more
- Spotify: A Garmin alternative for people already using Spotify, but watch compatibility and offline features still need checking; it requires a Spotify account or subscription appropriate to the features desired.
- Deezer: Another competing service with Garmin relevance, worth considering if your library already lives there. Catalog, offline features, and availability can vary.
- Amazon Music: May suit households already using Amazon’s music services; it does not carry over YouTube Music playlists and recommendations.
- Apple Music: A natural option to investigate for an Apple TV household seeking an Apple-native TV experience. It will not replace YouTube Music’s particular video catalog, uploads, or Google-account ecosystem.
Subscription benefits, watch support, and pricing vary by country, billing channel, plan, device, and current offer. Check the provider’s current terms rather than relying on a price or feature from an older report.
