Sound Search is now documented as an active YouTube Music feature, while the 2024 “AI radio” experiment has evolved into a product Google calls Ask Music. Sound Search helps identify a song that is playing, sung, or hummed. Ask Music creates a personalized mix from a text or voice request. A separate YouTube Labs experiment, AI music hosts, adds spoken commentary and is not the same service.

How to use Sound Search in YouTube Music
Google’s YouTube Music Help page documents Sound Search as a mobile feature. It can compare a nearby song, your singing, or your humming with the service’s catalog. To try it:
- Grant YouTube Music permission to use your microphone.
- Open the YouTube Music mobile app.
- Tap the search icon in the upper-right corner.
- Tap the Sound Search icon.
- Play the song, sing it, or hum its melody.
- When a match appears, tap it to play the track or save it to your library.
These instructions come from Google’s help documentation: YouTube Music Sound Search Help. Google notes that experiences can differ by country or region, so the control may not appear on every account or app installation.
If Sound Search finds nothing
- Move closer to the speaker and reduce background noise.
- Hum the most recognizable section, often the chorus, for a longer sample.
- Try singing the melody without lyrics, or repeat the attempt at a steadier tempo.
- Use remembered lyrics, an artist name, or other details in a normal search.
- Confirm that you are in YouTube Music rather than the main YouTube app.
A match is catalog-dependent and may identify a song without identifying the exact live performance, cover, remix, or recording you heard. A failed attempt does not prove that the track is absent from YouTube Music.

YouTube Music Sound Search versus YouTube Song Search
The main YouTube Android app has a related Song Search function. It lets users hum or record a song and returns related YouTube videos, Shorts, and official music content. Its documented Android path and results are different from Sound Search in YouTube Music. See Google’s Song Search overview and Android instructions.
What Ask Music does
Ask Music is Google’s current name for the generative music-discovery experience that followed the original conversational-radio test. You describe an intention in ordinary language, and YouTube Music generates a personalized selection or radio-like mix. Google says a large language model interprets the request and creates the mix’s title, description, and metadata; it does not compose new songs.

Prompts that work well
- “Upbeat workout tracks from the 2000s.”
- “Relaxing jazz for a rainy evening.”
- “New indie discoveries with mellow vocals.”
- “Dance music for a long drive.”
- “Intellectual technology podcasts.”
You can combine an activity, mood, genre, era, artist reference, familiarity level, or constraint such as “mostly instrumental” or “no explicit lyrics.” A request like “Make an upbeat 1990s alternative-rock mix for a 45-minute road trip, mostly familiar songs with a few discoveries” gives the system more useful direction than “Play something good.”
How to start an Ask Music mix
From Home
- Open YouTube Music on a mobile device.
- Find What are you in the mood for? on the Home tab.
- Tap Ask any way you like.
- Type or speak your request.
- Use the resulting control to start listening.
From Search
- Tap the search icon.
- Tap the Ask icon in the upper-right corner.
- Enter or speak a request.
- If a customized mix appears at the top, look for the Mix created by AI label.
- Tap Play.

When a prompt fails
Google warns that quality and accuracy vary, and safeguards can block some prompts or outputs. Make a request more musical by naming a genre, mood, activity, era, or artist. Remove vague references such as “that song from the movie,” try a shorter text request if voice recognition fails, and check that the app is updated and the account qualifies.
Who can use Ask Music?
Google currently lists Ask Music for YouTube Premium or YouTube Music Premium members on mobile devices, with the app set to English or Spanish. The listed markets are Australia, Canada, Ireland, Latin American countries excluding Brazil, Mexico, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Availability can change, and the list should not be read as a promise of identical access for every account.

Ask Music is therefore not documented as a universal free feature, and the current help page does not list desktop access. Sound Search is documented separately and is not described as requiring Premium.

Reports published on July 15, 2024 described two separate developments: Sound Search was rolling out as a way to identify songs by playing, singing, or humming them, while YouTube tested an AI-generated “conversational radio” experience with selected U.S. Premium subscribers. That wording was accurate for the test period. Google’s current documentation uses Ask Music rather than “conversational radio,” so an old headline should not be treated as the present product name or as proof of a worldwide launch in 2024.
Ask Music is not the AI music-host experiment
Ask Music primarily generates a listening mix from a request. It is not necessarily a voiced DJ that talks between tracks. In September 2025, YouTube announced a separate YouTube Labs experiment involving AI music hosts that provide commentary, trivia, and stories around music. That experiment initially had limited access for U.S.-based participants. Details are in YouTube’s announcement: Introducing YouTube Labs.
If you want spoken context, the AI-host experiment is the closer match. If you want a mood- or activity-based selection, Ask Music is the relevant feature.
Do you need a paid membership?
Ask Music currently requires YouTube Premium or YouTube Music Premium. YouTube Music Premium also includes ad-free music, background play, audio-only playback, and downloads, as described by Google at YouTube Music Premium Help and membership benefits.
