What happened on August 29, 2012?
Obama appeared under the account u/PresidentObama in a thread titled “I am Barack Obama, President of the United States — AMA.” He was campaigning for reelection and had just held a rally in Charlottesville, Virginia. His opening post said he would take questions for about half an hour.

Did Obama answer every question?
No. “Ask Me Anything” is the name of Reddit’s format, not a promise that the guest will answer every submission. Retrospective accounts report more than 10,000 questions, while Obama personally posted replies to only a small fraction—commonly described as roughly ten during the short session.

Counts can differ depending on whether a source counts questions, all comments, follow-up replies, or only comments authored directly by Obama. The archived Reddit thread, a transcript mirror, and contemporary summaries from International Business Times show the distinction clearly: the thread contains a vast audience discussion, but only a limited set of presidential answers.

Did the AMA really crash Reddit?
Reddit did experience substantial disruption shortly after the AMA began. Users reported trouble loading pages, logging in and refreshing. News accounts described error messages and periods when the service was unavailable or severely degraded.
“Crashed Reddit” is therefore fair shorthand, but it is not a precise technical description of a single, fully documented shutdown of every Reddit function. The safest conclusion is that the sudden demand overwhelmed parts of the service. The Washington Post, ABC News and TheWrap all reported outages or serious access problems.

How large was the audience?
Traffic was described as unprecedented for Reddit at the time. Later summaries cite more than 200,000 simultaneous visitors or attempted users, but the exact figure depends on what was measured—connected users, page requests or people trying to reach the site. This was widely described as the first Reddit AMA by a sitting U.S. president. That specific distinction matters: it was not the first presidential use of the internet or social media, but it was an unusually direct appearance in a community-run forum.

The AMA demonstrated Reddit’s growing cultural reach and the Obama campaign’s willingness to use digital platforms outside conventional press conferences and television interviews. It also showed the limits of that directness. The event was arranged during a campaign stop, verified through campaign and official channels, restricted to about 30 minutes, and shaped by selecting which questions to answer. It was interactive, but not an unfiltered or comprehensive presidential proceeding.

- “The audience was 200,000”: that figure is an attributed traffic estimate, and measurement methods varied.
- “An unmediated conversation”: the campaign organized and verified the appearance, and Obama had limited time and selective replies.
The accurate version is simple: Obama held a landmark, brief Reddit AMA during the 2012 campaign, answered roughly ten questions out of thousands, and drew enough traffic to disrupt parts of Reddit.
