To go live on YouTube, verify your channel, make sure it has no live-stream restriction from the previous 90 days, and enable live streaming; first activation can take up to 24 hours. Mobile streaming has additional requirements, including at least 50 subscribers. If you are already eligible, check the stream’s copyright status, upload bandwidth, and encoder preview before the event.
What you need before you can go live
YouTube’s general live-streaming setup requires a verified channel with no live-stream restriction in the preceding 90 days. When you turn on live streaming for the first time, activation may take up to 24 hours. YouTube supports several ways to broadcast, including a mobile device, webcam, encoder, or console; the mobile subscriber threshold does not apply to every method. See YouTube Help’s Get started with live streaming.
Mobile streaming has separate eligibility rules
For mobile live streaming, YouTube lists a verified channel, at least 50 subscribers, no live restriction in the previous 90 days, live streaming enabled, and a supported phone or tablet. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours here as well. Check YouTube’s mobile live-streaming requirements if the option is missing in the app.
Age and participation by minors
YouTube’s current general help guidance says a person must be at least 16 to stream. If someone under 16 participates from an adult-owned account, the adult must be visibly present. YouTube may remove streams or disable live chat when minors under 16 are not visibly accompanied, and the channel may face restrictions. Review YouTube’s current live-streaming eligibility guidance before planning a broadcast involving minors.

Choose a method that fits the production
| Method | What it suits | Important consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Mobile | Broadcasting directly from a supported phone or tablet | Requires at least 50 subscribers, along with the other mobile eligibility conditions. |
| Webcam | A straightforward camera-and-computer setup | Requires a computer with a webcam. |
| Encoder | Gameplay, overlays, external cameras or microphones, and more controlled production | Needs encoder setup and testing. YouTube recommends professional-grade hardware encoders for higher-production events, but says expensive equipment is not necessary to begin. |
| Console | Streaming from a supported gaming console | Check the console’s available streaming workflow and YouTube eligibility before the event. |
YouTube describes these options in its live-streaming setup guidance and live-streaming tips. A USB webcam can be useful for a webcam broadcast, and an external microphone can help an encoder setup, but neither is a universal prerequisite.
Rules that can interrupt a stream or restrict access
Community Guidelines and live restrictions
Community Guidelines violations can lead to a live-stream restriction. YouTube also identifies copyright strikes or matches to another copyrighted live broadcast, and certain streams involving minors, as causes of interruption or lost live access. If a restriction is active, do not try to evade it by streaming through another channel; YouTube treats that as circumvention. Read YouTube’s guidance on avoiding live-stream restrictions.

Copyright is checked while you are live
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content, including another live broadcast. If its systems detect a match, YouTube may warn you, replace the video with a placeholder, interrupt the stream, or terminate it if the material remains. A license does not necessarily prevent an interruption: the rights holder may need to allowlist your channel. Archived streams can also receive Content ID claims after the broadcast ends. See YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance.
Before using music, clips, event footage, or another creator’s broadcast, confirm that you have the necessary rights and that any required channel allowlisting is in place. YouTube’s livestream terms and conditions place responsibility for necessary rights and applicable requirements on the content provider. These platform rules are not legal advice about local licensing or broadcast law.

Preflight checks for a reliable broadcast
- Set up early. Configure the event and encoder before broadcast day rather than waiting until viewers are ready. YouTube recommends advance setup and testing in its live-streaming checklist.
- Check upload capacity. Compare your available upload bandwidth with the total stream bitrate. YouTube recommends leaving about 20% bandwidth headroom and accounting for both primary and backup bitrates if you use a backup feed. The 20% figure is a recommendation, not a guaranteed universal minimum speed. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
- Preview in Live Control Room. Start the encoder early enough to confirm that YouTube receives the feed and that the preview looks and sounds right.
- Test failover and recording. If your setup has a backup feed, test the switch before relying on it. Check that the local archive is recording if you need one.
- Check access and monitor the event. Confirm the watch page works on the devices your audience is likely to use, including mobile, and monitor picture and sound while live.
YouTube’s checklist covers setup, preview, failover, local archives, accessibility, and monitoring; use the official checklist for the current platform guidance.

“I can’t go live” before the stream starts
- Channel is not verified: Complete channel verification, then check whether live streaming is enabled.
- Live streaming is not activated yet: First activation can take up to 24 hours. Allow that time before troubleshooting equipment.
- There is a restriction: Check YouTube Studio for a live restriction or policy notice, including one from the preceding 90 days.
- You are trying to stream from mobile: Confirm the channel meets the 50-subscriber threshold and that the device is supported; these mobile requirements are separate from general eligibility.
Use YouTube’s general eligibility page or mobile requirements to identify which condition applies.

The feed becomes a placeholder or ends unexpectedly
Check YouTube Studio for a restriction, strike, or copyright notice. Consider whether the stream contains music, footage, or another live broadcast that may match third-party content. If you have permission to use the material, ask the rights holder whether your channel needs to be allowlisted. YouTube explains the possible live actions in its copyright guidance.
The stream buffers or drops
Compare your actual upload capacity with the total bitrate being sent, including any backup feed. Reduce the load or move to a more reliable network if there is not enough headroom. YouTube recommends about 20% spare upload bandwidth; it is not a one-size-fits-all speed guarantee. Check YouTube’s bandwidth recommendations.
