If YouTube Live says “invalid stream key” when you start FFmpeg, first copy the key from the intended stream in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, then replace the key FFmpeg is using. Check the server URL and the field where the key goes separately. A wrong RTMP/RTMPS endpoint can cause connection errors too, but SSL errors and timeouts point to transport setup—not necessarily a rejected key.
Fix the key and FFmpeg inputs first
- Open the correct stream in YouTube Studio. Go to Create → Go Live, open the Stream tab, and copy the stream key shown there. Make sure it belongs to the intended channel and stream. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance recommends getting a new key in Live Control Room and updating the encoder when a third-party encoder reports an error on start: Troubleshoot your YouTube live stream.
- Replace the configured key in FFmpeg. If the key may be stale, reset it in Live Control Room and update the value FFmpeg uses. Resetting requires channel owner or manager permission; editors and viewers cannot reset it. Treat the key as a password: YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” See Manage live stream settings.
- Keep the server URL and key conceptually separate. YouTube’s encoder setup provides a server URL and a stream key as separate values. Some encoders or integrations instead expect the ingestion URL and stream name together, in the form
STREAM_URL/STREAM_NAME. Check what your FFmpeg command or wrapper expects, and do not append the key twice. YouTube documents the encoder setup at Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder; the API describes the separate and combined forms in LiveStreams.
The exact FFmpeg command depends on whether you invoke FFmpeg directly or through a wrapper, which protocol and endpoint you use, and how that tool handles the key. Without the command and full error output, there is no single safe command-line syntax to prescribe.
Distinguish an invalid key from an RTMP/RTMPS connection problem
If YouTube explicitly reports that the key is invalid, prioritize the credential and its placement. If FFmpeg instead reports an SSL or certificate error, or times out before a stream appears, inspect the transport configuration as well. YouTube’s RTMPS guidance specifies an RTMPS URL, a valid ingestion endpoint, and port 443. An invalid certificate can indicate an RTMP endpoint being used for an SSL connection; a timeout can indicate cleartext RTMP sent to an endpoint that expects RTMPS. Custom clients may also need correct SNI/server-name handling. These are transport clues, not proof that the key itself was rejected. See Delivering Live YouTube Content via RTMPS.
| What you see | What to check next |
|---|---|
| YouTube explicitly says the stream key is invalid | Copy or reset the key in the intended stream’s Live Control Room, update FFmpeg, and verify the key is in the expected input. |
| SSL or certificate error | Confirm the endpoint uses RTMPS when the client is establishing SSL, and check endpoint and SNI/server-name handling. |
| Connection timeout | Check that the URL, protocol, and port match the intended ingestion endpoint; YouTube’s RTMPS guidance specifies port 443. |
Check encoding only after the connection is configured
Bitrate, resolution, codec, frame rate, and keyframe interval matter for stream compatibility and health, but they are not the first explanation for a credential rejection. Once FFmpeg connects, compare its output with YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions. YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264/H.265/AV1 video, AAC/MP3 audio, and up to 60 fps among its supported settings. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says it should not exceed four seconds. Bitrate recommendations vary by resolution, frame rate, and codec, so choose the applicable row in YouTube’s guidance rather than applying one bitrate to every stream.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
When the key change does not solve it
- Confirm which authentication flow you use. This fix applies when FFmpeg is supplied a YouTube stream key. Some software signs in without a stream key; YouTube says that software may need an update from its vendor. That is a different authentication flow.
- Check the encoder and stream preview. YouTube recommends confirming the encoder is current, inspecting the preview and stream health, checking CPU load and source quality, and testing outbound upload connectivity. These checks help separate encoder/source problems from network problems.
- Use the full error, not just the label. If the failure continues, capture the FFmpeg version, command with the secret removed, complete error output, and whether you used RTMP or RTMPS. Those details distinguish a key rejection from URL, TLS, or connectivity failures.
