Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallFor a stable 24/7 YouTube stream, start with RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), a 2-second keyframe interval, and a bitrate your upload connection can sustain—with about 20% bandwidth to spare. Test with representative movement and audio, then monitor stream health. Plan separately for playlist restarts, local recording, copyright clearance, and YouTube’s limits on archiving very long streams.
Recommended encoder settings
YouTube transcodes an incoming live feed into formats for viewers. Your encoder’s priority is therefore a stable, supported ingest signal. These settings follow YouTube’s encoder guidance; exact controls and labels vary by encoder.
| Setting | Starting point | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Ingest protocol | RTMPS | YouTube supports RTMP/RTMPS and recommends RTMPS. Choose it when your encoder supports it. |
| Video codec | H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 | Availability depends on the encoder and workflow. For HDR over RTMP(S), YouTube recommends H.265; its settings page does not support AV1 for HDR. |
| Rate control | CBR | A constant bitrate is the recommended baseline for live ingest. |
| Frame rate | Up to 60 fps | For prerecorded video, retaining the source frame rate is a practical choice unless you intentionally need conversion. YouTube lists the supported maximum; it does not prescribe a native-rate rule for this use case. |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds | Do not exceed 4 seconds. |
| Audio | AAC or MP3 | YouTube lists stereo AAC at 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps; for 5.1 audio, it lists AAC at 48 kHz and 384 Kbps. |
| SDR advanced video | Square pixels, progressive scan, two B-frames, one reference frame, CABAC, Rec. 709, 8-bit | These are YouTube’s listed SDR advanced settings. Encoder labels may differ. |
What bitrate should you use?
Choose the YouTube-recommended ingest bitrate for your codec, resolution, and frame rate. These figures are for a live encoder’s ingest, not recommendations for encoding an upload video.
| Resolution and frame rate | AV1 or H.265 recommended bitrate | H.264 recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p30 | 10 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 12 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 720p30 | 6 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 6 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
YouTube advises testing upload speed and leaving a 20% bandwidth margin. For example, a 14 Mbps H.264 feed calls for about 16.8 Mbps of available upload capacity under that rule (14 × 1.2). That is planning arithmetic, not a guarantee of uninterrupted streaming: available bandwidth can vary, and other uploads or feeds use capacity too.

Choosing between 720p and 1080p
Use the highest resolution and frame rate your source and connection can support reliably. A 1080p feed uses more upload bandwidth than 720p at the same frame rate in YouTube’s recommended values. Consider the source’s detail and motion, the encoder’s codec support and processing capacity, and stable upload headroom. There is no universal quality-versus-cost verdict for every channel.
Choosing a codec
H.264 is a straightforward choice when it is the codec your encoder supports reliably. AV1 or H.265 have lower recommended ingest bitrates than H.264 for the listed combinations, but the practical choice depends on encoder compatibility and workflow. Do not choose a codec based on bitrate alone.

Set up and test a prerecorded live feed
- Prepare a representative test. Include the same kind of motion and audio as the planned programming. YouTube’s guidance says: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream. Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.” Check the preview and stream-health messages before relying on the configuration.
- Configure the ingest. In your encoder, select RTMPS when available, a supported codec, CBR, the chosen resolution and frame rate, and a 2-second keyframe interval. Set audio to a supported format. Use the matching bitrate from the table, then confirm the encoder can hold it steadily.
- Protect upload capacity. Measure the upload connection under realistic operating conditions. Keep roughly 20% headroom beyond the stream bitrate and account for backups or other simultaneous feeds. YouTube gives a 1.5–2× upload-speed target in its simulstreaming guidance, but that guidance is specifically for simulstreaming, not a universal requirement for a single feed.
- Start a test broadcast and inspect stream health. Confirm that video and audio reach the YouTube preview and watch for health warnings or interruptions. YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring health during the stream.
- Decide how playback continues. A prerecorded playlist must be managed by the encoder or hosting setup. Decide what happens when the source playlist ends, the encoder stops, or the network fails. YouTube’s cited encoder guidance does not specify a playlist scheduler, automatic restart architecture, redundant internet path, or 24/7 service guarantee.
- Choose latency for the audience experience. Lower latency can increase playback buffering. For a passive prerecorded channel without real-time interaction, prioritize stable playback rather than minimizing latency.
- Keep a separate recording if you need an archive. YouTube recommends maintaining a local archive backup. Do not assume that one continuous all-day broadcast will be saved as a complete video.
Can YouTube archive a 24-hour livestream?
Not reliably. YouTube says, “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” It also warns that DVR rewind on long streams may be limited or unavailable. If you need a durable recording, keep a local archive and plan how the broadcast is divided operationally; a continuous 24-hour stream is not a guaranteed complete YouTube VOD.
Copyright, rights, and monetization
Clear rights for every element
Rights must cover the planned live use of every prerecorded segment, soundtrack, and other included material. YouTube’s livestream terms say the provider represents that it has the necessary rights for worldwide exploitation on Google services, including music licensing rights. A license alone may not prevent a live interruption: YouTube says a rights owner may need to add the channel to its Content ID allowlist.

Expect live copyright matching
YouTube scans livestreams for third-party content matches. A match can replace the stream with a placeholder; if the content remains, YouTube may interrupt or terminate the stream. Check permissions and any Content ID allowlisting arrangements before scheduling a long broadcast.
A loop is not automatically monetizable
YouTube’s monetization policy update of July 15, 2025 clarified that “repetitious content” is called “inauthentic content.” The policy addresses repetitive or mass-produced material and says channels should offer original, authentic content with creative, educational, or other value. Monetization is assessed based on the channel and its content; the fact that a channel uses a live loop does not settle whether it qualifies.

Run the stream yourself or use a cloud service
A do-it-yourself setup needs an encoder and a reliable, continuously available power and network connection. You must also manage the playlist, restarts, local archive, and monitoring. A UPS may reduce the risk of a brief power interruption to local equipment; it is not a YouTube requirement or a fix for internet or platform outages.
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo is #1 for keeping a prerecorded YouTube stream running: it loops uploaded videos in the cloud, supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and offers a free first day. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card; the Monthly plan is $9.99 per month. Every slot includes 10 GB of storage per slot, pooled across active slots, 24/7 looping and playlists, and support from the StreamNeo team. See StreamNeo or start the free first day.

Troubleshooting common stream problems
| Symptom | Likely cause to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Stream health warns of unstable or insufficient upload | The connection cannot sustain the chosen bitrate, or other traffic is consuming headroom. | Retest upload capacity, pause competing uploads, and lower resolution, frame rate, or bitrate to a combination that remains stable. Keep the recommended headroom. |
| Video or audio does not appear correctly in preview | Encoder settings, source playback, or the selected audio/video format may not match the intended feed. | Test with representative movement and audio; verify the codec and audio format are supported and inspect the encoder output before the full broadcast. |
| Live stream is interrupted after a content match | YouTube detected third-party content, or the channel is not allowlisted by the relevant rights owner. | Review the rights for the matched material and contact the rights owner about Content ID allowlisting where appropriate. A claimed license does not itself guarantee uninterrupted ingest. |
| The broadcast is missing or incomplete in the archive | The stream exceeded 12 hours, or DVR/archive behavior was limited. | Keep a local archive and do not rely on a 24-hour YouTube stream to produce a complete VOD. |
| The feed stops when a playlist ends or equipment loses power/network | The encoder or hosting arrangement has no configured continuation or recovery behavior. | Decide in advance how the playlist repeats and how the stream restarts after a failure; test the full operating setup. YouTube’s encoder guidance does not provide that architecture. |
