There is no documented India-only Media Source preset. Choose playback options for the clip, then set YouTube’s output resolution, frame rate and bitrate to suit your measured, reliable upload speed.
What OBS Media Source does—and what it does not
Media Source adds a local media file to an OBS scene. Use it for an intro, intermission video, background clip or other prerecorded asset. To capture gameplay, use a gameplay capture source; Media Source does not capture your game. Encoder options such as bitrate, codec and keyframe interval are separate from the source’s playback controls.
OBS lists video formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF and WebM, and audio formats including MP3, AAC, OGG and WAV. See the OBS Project’s Media Sources guide (page dated January 11, 2022) for supported formats and controls.
Set up Media Source playback
- Add the source: in OBS, select the scene where the file should appear, use the Sources panel’s add control, choose Media Source, and select or create a source. Enable Local File and choose the media file.
- Choose whether it repeats: leave Loop off for a clip that should play once. Turn it on for a repeating intermission or background video.
- Choose what happens when the source becomes visible: Restart playback when source becomes active is on by default. Leave it on if the clip should start from the beginning whenever its scene becomes visible; turn it off if playback should not restart on activation.
- Choose what happens at the end: Show nothing when playback ends is on by default. Keep it enabled if the clip should disappear after playing. Disable it if you want the final frame to remain visible.
- Consider resource use: Close file when inactive is off by default. Enabling it unloads the file while its source is hidden or off-scene, which can free memory but may cause a delay when it is shown again.
- Consider hardware decoding: Use hardware decoding when available is off by default. Enable it to let OBS use an available GPU hardware decoder for supported formats.
For a one-time intro, Loop should be off; whether playback restarts on activation depends on how you use the scene. For an overlay that should vanish at the end, leave Show nothing when playback ends enabled. These choices control the local file’s playback, not YouTube’s live archive or DVR.

Choose YouTube encoder settings for your connection
YouTube’s encoder recommendations apply to the outgoing stream, not the Media Source file. For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 video codecs, recommends CBR, supports frame rates up to 60 fps and recommends a 2-second keyframe interval (no more than 4 seconds). Consult YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions for codec- and resolution-specific guidance. The figures below are YouTube recommendations for H.264, not guaranteed requirements for any particular connection.

These are platform recommendations; they do not establish what a particular Indian connection can sustain. The audience’s location alone does not determine the right profile. Measure your upload speed and choose settings your connection can maintain, with capacity left over for normal variation and other network use.

- Measure upload capacity: YouTube’s streaming tips recommend an upload-speed test and leaving about 20% of available upload bandwidth unused as headroom. Account for other people and services sharing the connection. YouTube puts the constraint plainly: “The total bitrate you’re streaming cannot exceed the amount of upload bandwidth available.”
- Select a profile: pick a resolution and frame rate suited to the gameplay and choose the corresponding codec and bitrate guidance in YouTube’s encoder table. If your stable upload capacity cannot support the desired profile with headroom, lower the bitrate, resolution or frame rate rather than relying on a peak speed.
- Test before going public: run an unlisted stream, check image motion and audio, and watch stream health in YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube’s live streaming tips cover setup and monitoring.
Protect the VOD: archive, local recording and DVR
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived; a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. If a complete VOD matters, do not rely on YouTube’s archive alone. YouTube recommends: “We recommend recording a local archive as a backup.” See Archive live streams. Before a long session, confirm that OBS local recording is enabled, that the destination has room, and that the recording file is growing.
DVR is a separate YouTube Live Control Room setting, not an OBS Media Source option. When enabled, it lets viewers pause, rewind and resume a live stream. Rewind can be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours, and viewers cannot seek to a point before the broadcast began. See Turn on DVR on live streams and Manage live stream settings.

Choose latency for chat or playback stability
Latency is the delay between capture and what viewers see; it is set in YouTube’s live settings, not in Media Source. Lower latency can make chat interaction feel more immediate but may increase playback buffering. If rapid interaction matters, test a lower-latency mode with your actual connection. If a steadier viewing experience matters more than immediacy, a higher-latency mode may be preferable.
Copyright and VOD availability
Using a local file as a Media Source does not establish that you have the right to broadcast or archive it. Make sure game footage, music, overlays and other material are cleared for livestreaming and VOD use. YouTube may apply its platform policies to live content and archived video; review YouTube’s current live streaming tips and settings before broadcasting. No OBS playback option guarantees that a VOD will remain available.

Troubleshooting common problems
- The file does not appear: check that Local File is enabled and the selected path points to the intended asset. Confirm that it is in a format OBS lists as supported.
- The clip repeats unexpectedly: turn off Loop if it should play only once.
- The clip starts over when returning to its scene: this is the default behavior when Restart playback when source becomes active is enabled. Disable it if restarting on activation is not wanted.
- The last frame remains on screen: Show nothing when playback ends is disabled; enable it if the source should disappear at the end.
- The source takes time to appear after being hidden: Close file when inactive may be unloading it off-scene. Disable that option if you prefer it to remain loaded.
- The live stream reports poor health or drops frames: compare the chosen bitrate with measured stable upload capacity, preserve YouTube’s recommended headroom, and test a lower-bitrate or lower-resolution profile if needed. Check Live Control Room health during the test.
- The YouTube archive is missing or incomplete: streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured. Check the local OBS recording as well; YouTube recommends keeping a local archive backup.
