Yes—Instagram’s native mobile app allows up to 20 photos or videos in one organic feed carousel. The change expanded the previous 10-item limit in August 2024. However, the limit is not universal across every publishing tool: third-party schedulers such as Later may still support only 10 items, and Instagram’s carousel ad format remains separate.
What changed?
Instagram carousels used to be limited to 10 photos or videos. After testing longer carousels, including a 15-frame version reported in March 2024, Instagram broadly expanded the standard feed-post limit to 20 items on August 8, 2024.
The 20-item limit is shared between photos and videos. You can publish 20 still images, 20 videos, or any combination totaling 20 media items. They appear as one swipeable feed post—not as 20 separate posts.
The change was reported by Social Media Today, 9to5Mac, and PetaPixel.

How to publish a 20-item carousel
- Open the Instagram app on your phone.
- Tap Create, the plus (+) button, or the equivalent new-post control.
- Choose Post.
- Tap the Select multiple button, usually shown as stacked squares.
- Select up to 20 photos, videos, or a mixture of both.
- Press and drag the selected items to reorder them. Remove any item you do not want before continuing.
- Choose the carousel’s orientation and check the crop on every frame.
- Apply a filter to all items or edit individual photos and videos separately.
- Tap Next, then add a caption, location, tags, music where available, and other post settings.
- Tap Share.
Button names can vary slightly by iPhone or Android version and by Instagram app build. The essential path is the native app’s new-post workflow, followed by the multiple-selection control.
What counts toward the 20-item limit?
Instagram’s practical limit is 20 media items, not 20 photographs plus an additional allowance for videos. A carousel can contain still images, videos, or both.
A single photo or video is not a carousel. The expanded limit matters only when multiple media items are selected for one feed post.

Access can differ according to the app version, device, account state, region, temporary bugs, and—most importantly—the publishing surface. The native Instagram app is the clearest route to the 20-item limit, but websites, Business Suite workflows, and third-party tools may impose different limits.

There is also conflicting documentation. Instagram’s indexed Help Center page still says that a carousel can contain up to 10 photos or videos. That page may be outdated or describe a different publishing surface; it does not outweigh the reported 2024 rollout and current native-app guidance.
Try these steps if Instagram stops at 10
- Update Instagram through your device’s app store.
- Force-close and reopen the app.
- Sign out and back in.
- Confirm that you selected Post, not Story or Reel.
- Test the workflow on another device or account.
- On Android, clear Instagram’s cache; reinstalling may also help when appropriate.
- Check whether Business Suite or a scheduling platform is imposing the limit.
- Report the missing feature through Instagram’s in-app help tools.
These steps cannot guarantee that an account will receive the feature. If the post is time-sensitive, splitting the material into two carousels is safer than relying on an unverified workaround.
The native-app and scheduler split
The biggest practical exception is scheduling. Later’s documentation, updated June 19, 2026, says Instagram’s direct app publishing supports up to 20 media items while Later’s own API-based carousel workflow remains limited to 10: Later’s current help documentation.
That means a creator may be able to publish 20 items manually in Instagram but see only 10 available when preparing the same post in a social-media management platform. Notification-based publishing may require you to complete the final steps inside Instagram, particularly when using Instagram-native features such as music.

Do not assume that a scheduler’s limit reflects Instagram’s consumer-app limit. If publishing all 20 frames is essential, prepare and publish the carousel directly in the Instagram app.
Important carousel limitations
One orientation controls the whole post
Instagram does not let you choose a completely different orientation for every frame in the same carousel. The selected presentation affects the entire post. Check every crop before sharing, especially when mixing landscape, portrait, and square media.
Faces, product labels, subtitles, and important text should not sit close to edges that may be cropped. For a polished photo essay or tutorial, preparing the media on a consistent canvas is safer.

The first frame matters most
The first selected item acts as the cover in the feed and on your profile grid. Use it to establish the subject clearly and make viewers want to swipe. A weak first frame can make the entire post look less compelling, even if later frames are stronger.

Editing is limited after publication
Before publishing, you can reorder or remove selected items. Afterward, Instagram generally allows edits to the caption, location, and tagged accounts, but not arbitrary reordering or full editing of individual carousel frames. If a frame must be replaced or the sequence must be changed, deleting and recreating the post may be necessary. See Instagram’s carousel help documentation for the current editing behavior.
Uploads may take longer
Twenty large photos—or several videos—can take longer to process and upload. Meta notes that carousels containing multiple videos may take longer and recommends a reliable network. Keep the app open during publishing when possible and avoid uploading over an unstable connection.

More frames are useful when the post has a genuine sequence: a travel album, event recap, documentary-style photo essay, tutorial, product demonstration, lookbook, or before-and-after story.

Use fewer than 20 when the extra images are near-duplicates, when the useful information is contained in the first few slides, or when the call to action would be buried. Filling every slot can make a post feel repetitive rather than complete.

- Use the first frame as the hook or cover.
- Put the key result, destination, product, or lesson near the beginning.
- Give each later frame a distinct purpose.
- Use a clear chronological or instructional sequence.
- Keep text cards readable on a phone.
- End at the strongest natural point instead of adding filler.
Organic posts are not the same as Instagram ads
The 20-item limit applies to organic feed carousels in the native Instagram app. It does not automatically apply to every Instagram format.
Meta’s carousel advertising documentation describes carousel ads as supporting up to 10 images or videos. Ads also use separate cards, each of which can have its own link. A 10-card advertising limit therefore does not disprove the 20-item limit for organic posts.
Stories, Reels, desktop publishing, Business Suite, and third-party scheduling tools also have their own workflows and restrictions.

What happens after you publish?
The carousel appears as one feed post. Viewers swipe horizontally through its photos and videos, while likes and comments apply to the post as a whole. The first frame is the visible cover on the profile grid. Videos inside the carousel remain part of the feed post and are not automatically converted into Reels.
