Yes—Roku currently advertises more than 500 free live TV channels through The Roku Channel. The important catch is that the Streaming Stick is paid hardware, the channels are ad-supported FAST (free ad-supported streaming television) services, and an internet connection is required. This is not the same as receiving 500 cable networks or every local broadcast station.
What “500+ free live channels” means
Roku’s consumer site currently promotes “500+ free live TV channels,” while its 2025 Form 10-K describes the offering as more than 500 FAST channels. The lineup includes news, weather, entertainment, reality, food and home, children’s programming and other categories. Roku says availability can vary by geography, platform and time.
Free means there is no separate subscription charge for the listed channels. You still need the streaming device (unless you already have a compatible platform), internet service, electricity and a television. Advertising pays for the programming.
Live generally means a scheduled, linear stream that you join in progress. Many channels run reruns, themed blocks or continuous feeds. The label does not promise a live broadcast of every program or sporting event.

- Easy voice search & control: Quickly search across thousands of top channels, play entertainment, control your streaming, and more with your voice
- No more juggling remotes: Power up your TV, adjust the volume, control your Roku device, switch inputs on your Roku TV, and more—all in a tap
- Pre-set channel shortcuts: Pre-set channel shortcuts let you launch popular streaming channels with the push of a button, all without having to scroll
- Simple setup: Simply turn on your Roku device and pull the battery tab on the back of the remote and it should pair automatically
- Works with your Roku device: Roku Voice Remote works with all Roku TV models, Roku audio products, and most Roku players*
Roku’s catalog changes: channels can be added, renamed, moved or removed. Treat 500+ as a current platform-level marketing count, not a permanent number that every viewer will see in every menu.

How to open the free live channels
From The Roku Channel
- Press Home on the Roku remote.
- Open The Roku Channel.
- Select the Live TV row or Live TV area.
- Choose a channel from the guide or browse by category.
You may also find free programming in the Live TV Zone on the Roku Home Screen. Menu names and placement can differ by Roku OS version, device model, account and rollout.
If The Roku Channel is missing
- Open Home > Streaming Store > Apps.
- Find or search for The Roku Channel.
- Highlight it, press OK and choose Add app.
- Restart the Roku if the app does not appear immediately.
Roku’s installation instructions are at this support page.
Opening the guide while watching
When watching a live streaming channel, press Left on the remote’s directional pad to open the Live TV Channel Guide. Roku’s support documentation says that guide currently covers information from over 165 live streaming channels. That is a guide-coverage figure, not a replacement for Roku’s separate 500+ catalog claim; regional availability and interface differences can produce a smaller list.

What you need for it to work
- An HDMI-equipped television.
- A Roku Streaming Stick or another compatible device.
- Working broadband internet and Wi-Fi.
- Power for the Roku and TV.
- Roku activation and an account when prompted.
The current HD Streaming Stick plugs into HDMI, uses USB-C power and connects over dual-band 2.4 GHz/5 GHz Wi-Fi. A weak signal can cause buffering, reduced picture quality or failed playback. If the internet is down, streaming channels and online guide listings are unavailable.
Roku’s product information is at the Streaming Stick product page.
Streaming Stick versus Roku TV: the antenna distinction
A Streaming Stick is an internet-streaming accessory. It does not contain an antenna tuner and cannot turn an ordinary television into an over-the-air receiver.
For free local broadcast stations, connect an HDTV antenna to a compatible Roku TV (or directly to a television or tuner with an antenna input), then scan for channels. On a Roku TV, the antenna listings can be combined with streaming channels in the guide. Roku’s scan path is Home > Live TV > Scan for channels.

- Compact without compromises: The sleek design of Roku Streaming Stick won’t block neighboring HDMI ports, and it even powers from your TV alone, plugging into the back and staying out of sight. No wall outlet, no extra cords, no clutter.
- No more juggling remotes: Power up your TV, adjust the volume, and control your Roku device with one remote. Use your voice to quickly search, play entertainment, and more.
- Shows on the go: Take your TV to-go when traveling—without needing to log into someone else’s device.
- TV, simplified: With setup that only takes minutes, a simple-to-navigate Home Screen, and an uncluttered remote control that does all you need—Roku makes it easier to watch the TV you love.
Roku also promotes local-news streaming options such as NewsON and Haystack News, and says more than 100 free local channels and selected NBC News local stations may be available. Those streams depend on location and provider; they are not a guarantee of every local ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX or PBS affiliate’s complete schedule.

What is not included in the free offer
- Every local affiliate: Streaming local-news services are not equivalent to full over-the-air reception.
- Premium cable networks: ESPN, TNT, TBS and similar services generally require a paid subscription.
- Comprehensive major-league sports: Free channels may offer highlights, analysis, older games, niche sports or selected events, but not guaranteed access to every NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL or major college game.
- Commercial-free viewing: FAST programming is funded by advertising.
- Permanent channel access: The lineup can change.
Roku lists paid services—including Sling, Fubo and Hulu + Live TV—alongside its free options. Those services are separate subscriptions, not part of the 500+ free-channel offer.
Can a Roku Streaming Stick replace cable?
It can replace a cable box for viewers whose priorities are free ad-supported channels, general news and weather, classic shows and movies, lifestyle programming, children’s content and free on-demand titles. It is unlikely to replace a full cable package if you need every local affiliate, a specific cable network, regional sports networks, premium sports or traditional cable DVR features.
Think of the Stick as a gateway to internet television. Whether it replaces cable depends on the channels you actually watch, not on the headline count.

The Roku Channel is also available, subject to regional and platform limits, through the web, mobile apps, compatible Samsung TVs and compatible Amazon Fire TV devices. Check therokuchannel.roku.com or Roku’s availability guidance before purchasing hardware. If your existing television already supports the service, the 500+ channels are a platform benefit—not a unique capability generated by the physical Stick.
Troubleshooting common problems
The app is missing
Use Home > Streaming Store > Apps, add The Roku Channel, and restart the device if necessary.
Live TV will not load
- Confirm the Roku is connected to Wi-Fi.
- Try another streaming app to determine whether the problem is general.
- Restart the Roku or power-cycle it.
- Restart the router if other apps also fail.
- Check whether only one channel is affected.
You see fewer than 500 channels
That can reflect regional availability, catalog turnover, different rows or apps, and the distinction between the total catalog and the guide’s over-165-channel listing. Roku’s two figures should not be treated as an exact promise for every interface.

You expected antenna channels
The Stick is not an antenna tuner. Use an antenna with a Roku TV or another compatible television/tuner.
The TV has no free HDMI port
Try another input or an appropriate HDMI switch. Do not force the connector or assume an older television is compatible.
The Stick keeps restarting
An underpowered TV USB port can cause instability. Use Roku’s supplied power arrangement or a suitable wall adapter according to Roku’s instructions.
The Bottom Line
A Roku Streaming Stick can deliver a large and useful selection of free live programming, but it is best understood as an inexpensive gateway to ad-supported internet television—not as free cable, free premium sports or guaranteed local broadcast service.
