How to watch the Yellowstone finale now
The original U.S. premiere was on Paramount Network, not on the standard U.S. Paramount+ on-demand catalog at launch. That distinction matters: Paramount Network was the first-run television outlet for the final episodes, while streaming availability has depended on territory and later licensing arrangements.

For U.S. viewers, the latest checked availability listing identifies the complete 14-episode fifth season on Peacock Premium and Peacock Premium Plus. The finale and the rest of Season 5 are also listed for purchase or download through Amazon Video and other digital retailers. Check the episode count, plan requirement, price, and playback territory immediately before watching because these details are not permanent.
If you prefer a physical copy, an active listing for Yellowstone Season 5 DVD is the most directly relevant option to check. Physical-media editions can differ by region and may or may not include the same extras, so confirm that the listing is for the complete fifth season and that Episode 14, “Life Is a Promise,” is included.
Was the finale broadcast on CBS?
Not originally. CBS carried a special airing of the first Season 5B episode on November 10, 2024, at 10:00 p.m. Eastern. That announcement concerned the season-premiere episode of the second half of Season 5, not the series finale. The finale’s original U.S. outlet was Paramount Network at 8:00 p.m. Eastern on December 15.
Spoiler-free description
“Life Is a Promise” closes the Dutton family’s fight to control the Yellowstone ranch. The episode deals with the consequences of John Dutton’s death, the ranch’s financial and inheritance crisis, and the question of whether preserving the land requires the Duttons to give up ownership of it. It is less a conventional victory lap than a farewell to the estate, its traditions, and the family structure built around it.
Warning: The rest of this article contains major spoilers, including Jamie’s death, the resolution of John’s murder, and the final fate of the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch.

Yellowstone series finale ending explained
John Dutton’s funeral begins the farewell
The finale opens with the Dutton family and the Yellowstone cowboys laying John Dutton to rest. The funeral and burial are the emotional center of the episode, but the scene also establishes that the old ranch order cannot continue. Beth mourns her father and turns her grief toward revenge. Kayce reaches a different conclusion, choosing forgiveness rather than allowing the family’s cycle of retaliation to define what remains of his life. Rip and the ranch hands help carry out the burial, reinforcing the bond between John and the people who worked the land with him.
Kayce returns the ranch to Broken Rock
Kayce’s answer to the ranch’s financial and inheritance problems is to sell the Yellowstone property back to Thomas Rainwater and the Broken Rock Reservation for the same price per acre that the Dutton family originally paid. The arrangement prevents the land from being consumed by the development projects that threatened it and returns control to its Indigenous stewards.
This is not presented as an ordinary commercial sale or as a way for the Duttons to preserve their estate under another name. The deal changes the meaning of the ranch. It protects the land from development, but it ends Dutton ownership of the property that defined the series. Kayce, Monica, and Tate retain a smaller East Camp cattle operation, giving them a future connected to ranching without reproducing John’s increasingly unmanageable empire.

Beth’s long-running conflict with Jamie reaches its endpoint when she confronts him at his home and kills him. Their feud has always combined personal resentment with the question of who bears responsibility for John’s death and the family’s collapse. The finale treats Beth’s act as the final expression of that conflict rather than as a clean resolution: Jamie is gone, but the violence has not repaired the family.

Rip and Lloyd then dispose of Jamie’s body at the train station and burn his vehicle, following the show’s established method for making a murder disappear. Beth also points investigators toward Sarah Atwood as the person responsible for John’s killing. That move helps redirect official suspicion away from the Dutton family while leaving the audience with the irony that Beth’s private revenge and the public investigation are moving along separate tracks.
The ranch house and sign disappear
Near the end of the episode, Beth, Rip, and Kayce walk through the ranch house and barn one last time. The Dutton Ranch sign is not retained, and the Broken Rock community takes possession of the property. The house is dismantled, visually ending the physical symbol of Dutton control rather than merely changing the name on the deed.
The fate of the family graves provides one of the episode’s most important final details. Mo Brings Plenty prevents them from being destroyed and restores the headstones. The land changes hands, but the Dutton dead remain part of its history. That distinction allows the finale to end the estate without pretending that the family’s presence can simply be erased.

Where the main characters end up
- Kayce, Monica, and Tate: They begin a new life running a smaller cattle operation at East Camp. Kayce has chosen a future based on family and stewardship rather than control of the entire Yellowstone estate.
- Beth and Rip: They move to a new ranch and appear to find a more independent future together, separate from the Dutton property and its inherited obligations.
- Jamie: Beth kills him, and Rip and Lloyd dispose of his body at the train station.
- Thomas Rainwater and Broken Rock: The community takes possession of the former Dutton Ranch, preserving it from the development that endangered it.
- Ryan and Abby: Ryan reconnects with Abby after recognizing that he chose the wrong relationship.
- Teeter: She continues working in Texas, providing one of the finale’s smaller continuations beyond the Dutton family crisis.
What the finale means for the ranch
The original Yellowstone Dutton Ranch ceases to exist as a Dutton-controlled estate. That is the decisive outcome: the land survives, but the dynasty does not. Kayce’s agreement with Rainwater protects the property from development and acknowledges the land’s Indigenous connection, while the Dutton family gives up the ownership that caused so much of its conflict.

The ending is therefore bittersweet rather than triumphant. Beth and Rip get distance from the ranch, and Kayce’s family gets a more manageable operation, but the central estate is gone. The finale’s promise is not that the Dutton legacy will continue unchanged; it is that the land may have a future once the family’s struggle to possess it ends.
