Spotify AI Band Controversy: Who Is The Velvet Sundown, and Are They Real?

The Velvet Sundown is a real streaming project built around a fictional band identity, not a verified four-member human group. Here is what the Spotify controversy, Deezer labels and public reporting establish about its members, AI use and unknown operators.

The Velvet Sundown is a real streaming project built around a fictional band identity—not a verified four-member group of human musicians. Its revised Spotify biography describes it as a synthetic music project guided by human creative direction, with AI supporting the music, voices, lyrics, imagery, characters and stories.

The project exists and has unidentified human operators, but there is no reliable public evidence of a conventional band, live lineup or confirmed member biographies. “Human-directed synthetic music project” is more accurate than either “ordinary band” or the unqualified claim that it is “made entirely by AI.”

The Velvet Sundown is a real streaming project built around a fictional band identity—not a verified four-member group of human musicians. The project’s own revised Spotify biography describes it as a “synthetic music project guided by human creative direction,” with AI supporting its music, voices, lyrics, imagery, characters and stories. The humans operating it are real in the practical sense that someone created and distributed the work, but their identities and exact roles remain undisclosed.

That makes “fake band” too vague and “a band made entirely by AI” too absolute. The most defensible description is a human-directed synthetic music project presented through a fictional band persona.

What does “real” mean in this case?

Question Best-supported answer
Do songs and albums exist? Yes. The project released music on streaming services, beginning with two albums in June 2025.
Is there a documented four-person band? No reliable public evidence establishes one. There is no convincing record of live shows, interviews, an established musical history or independently verified members.
Are the early member names confirmed musicians? No. Gabe Farrow, Lennie West, Milo Rains and Orion “Rio” Del Mar should be treated as fictional persona elements, not factual biographies. NME’s reporting found no convincing evidence that they were a conventional performing lineup.
Was AI used? Yes, according to the project’s own revised profile and Deezer’s labeling of its releases. The precise division between human direction, generation, editing and distribution has not been publicly documented.
Is there a known person behind it? Not authoritatively. Andrew Frelon became associated with the story but later admitted to a media hoax and was disavowed by the Spotify page; that does not establish him as the creator.

How The Velvet Sundown controversy unfolded

  1. June 2025: a sudden streaming arrival. The Velvet Sundown appeared on Spotify with Floating on Echoes and Dust and Silence. The project was packaged like an ordinary indie or folk-rock group, complete with a four-member biography, stylized images and a musical backstory.
  2. Listeners noticed the missing real-world footprint. The project accumulated hundreds of thousands of monthly Spotify listeners and later passed million-level milestones, although contemporary reports used different measures—monthly listeners, plays and streams—and different dates. Its growth through playlists was striking because there was no comparable history of concerts, press interviews, touring, live video or identifiable musicians. The Guardian’s account and NME’s report both document the investigation.
  3. AI suspicions grew, but impressions were not proof. Listeners and writers pointed to the music, vocals and artwork as resembling generative output. Those observations helped prompt scrutiny, but a sound or image “feeling like AI” cannot by itself establish how it was made.
  4. A supposed spokesperson complicated the story. A person using the name Andrew Frelon told journalists that Suno had been used for at least some of the music and presented himself as connected to the project. Rolling Stone later reported that Frelon admitted running an elaborate hoax aimed at the media. The project’s Spotify page then disavowed his affiliation. His statements are therefore evidence of a media-manipulation episode, not proof that he created The Velvet Sundown or was an authorized spokesperson.
  5. The project acknowledged its synthetic construction. Its Spotify biography was revised to say: “The Velvet Sundown is a synthetic music project guided by human creative direction, and composed, voiced, and visualized with the support of artificial intelligence.” That is the clearest public explanation of the project’s nature.

Are Gabe Farrow, Lennie West, Milo Rains and Rio Del Mar real?

There is no reliable public evidence that those four names identify musicians who perform together as The Velvet Sundown. They belonged to the project’s initial presentation as a conventional band. Once that presentation was questioned, the names were not independently substantiated through the usual evidence associated with a working act: verifiable credits, live appearances, interviews, prior releases, label history or identifiable social accounts.

This does not prove that no people anywhere have those names. It means something narrower and more important: the public record does not verify them as the members of this band. Repeating the names without that qualification turns fictional branding into fake biography.

The project’s later profile shifted away from a human lineup and toward a synthetic identity. Its operators may include one person or several people; they may write prompts, select outputs, edit recordings, create artwork, manage distribution and operate the website. None of those details has been authoritatively established in the reporting reviewed.

Was the music made by AI?

AI was part of the project’s stated creation process. The revised Spotify description says that the project’s music and related media were made with AI support. Reporting also associated the music with Suno, an AI music-generation service, but the strongest public link to Suno came through the Frelon episode. Because Frelon admitted to manipulating journalists, it is safer to describe Suno as a reported or acknowledged tool connection—not as a fully verified production log.

Deezer added another piece of evidence. In June 2025, it launched an AI-music tagging system and flagged The Velvet Sundown’s albums under its system for fully AI-generated tracks. Deezer’s chief executive said the service detected the tracks as fully AI-generated. That is significant, but it still does not reveal every step taken by the human operators or prove that every individual audio element followed the same workflow.

AI-generated, AI-assisted and human-directed are not identical

Term What it can mean What can be said about The Velvet Sundown
AI-generated A system produced the relevant audio, image, text or other material, potentially after human prompts and selection. Deezer treated the albums as fully AI-generated under its labeling system, and its CEO described the detected tracks that way.
AI-assisted AI contributed to creation, while humans may have directed, selected, edited, arranged or packaged the result. This is the project’s own wording and the safest broad description of its public creative model.
Human-directed synthetic project Humans create the concept and make editorial decisions, while the fictional identity and media are substantially produced with generative tools. This best captures the relationship between the anonymous operators, the fictional band and the released material.

What cannot responsibly be claimed is that every sound was generated by Suno, that no human touched the recordings, or that the project used one particular technical workflow from start to finish. The available evidence does not support that level of detail.

Readers looking for technical background rather than a biography of the project may find a Suno AI music book useful as an educational companion to the broader subject of AI-assisted composition, lyrics and audio production. It should not be treated as evidence of The Velvet Sundown’s private workflow or as an instruction to imitate its presentation.

Why Spotify became the center of the dispute

The controversy was not simply that some listeners disliked AI-made songs. The deeper issue was presentation and disclosure: a synthetic act could look like a human band, enter a mainstream streaming catalog, appear in recommendation and playlist systems, and attract a large audience before listeners knew what they were hearing.

At the time, reporting noted that streaming services were not generally required to label AI-generated music, although the legal position varies by jurisdiction and continues to change. Musicians and industry figures raised questions about transparency, authorship, consent, compensation and the possible use of copyrighted recordings in training systems. Those are legitimate policy questions, but they are not proof that The Velvet Sundown infringed copyright, used illegal training data, committed royalty fraud or employed bots. Each allegation would require separate evidence.

Spotify’s later policy changes show how platforms responded to the wider problem. In September 2025, Spotify said it had removed more than 75 million spammy tracks during the previous 12 months and was strengthening protections against unauthorized vocal impersonation, fraudulent uploads to another artist’s profile and deceptive behavior. It also said it was developing AI disclosures in song credits using an industry standard being developed through DDEX. Crucially, Spotify explained that such disclosures depend on information submitted by artists, labels, distributors or other music partners. The absence of an AI credit therefore does not prove that no AI was used.

In April 2026, Spotify introduced a Verified by Spotify badge for certain artist profiles. At launch, profiles primarily representing AI-generated or AI-persona artists were not eligible. The badge is a profile-authenticity and trust signal—not a guarantee that a verified artist used no AI in songwriting, production, artwork or vocals.

What Deezer changed

Deezer’s approach made the dispute more visible because it labeled the releases while Spotify’s presentation was still being debated. At the June 2025 launch of its tagging system, Deezer said nearly one-fifth of its daily uploads—more than 20,000 tracks—were 100% AI-generated. Those are Deezer’s own company-reported figures, not an independently validated measurement of every streaming service.

In June 2026, Deezer announced a free Deezer AI music detector intended to identify AI-generated tracks across 20 major streaming platforms. Deezer said its system had labeled more than 13.4 million tracks in 2025 and claimed 99.8% accuracy for detecting music it classified as 100% AI-generated. Those claims should be read with the same limitation: detection is most directly relevant to fully generated tracks, while mixed human-and-AI production is harder to reduce to a binary label.

Where is The Velvet Sundown now?

The project also developed an official website that openly embraces the artificiality. It describes the act as “not real in the traditional sense,” presents the music as retro-synthetic psych-pop and acknowledges the use of AI tools. The site sells official The Velvet Sundown merchandise, reinforcing the idea that the fictional identity itself—not a hidden touring lineup—is part of the artwork and business model. Visit the official Velvet Sundown website if you want to examine the project’s current self-presentation.

The latest accessible profile results showed the project continuing to appear on at least one Spotify artist profile, with the synthetic-project explanation and three 2025 albums visible. A separate Spotify profile using a similar name also exists. Its different artist ID means it should not automatically be assumed to be the same entity: streaming platforms can contain duplicate, unrelated or impersonating profiles. Compare the artist identity and ID rather than relying only on a display name.

There is also a separate human response. In July 2026, musicians formed Bootleg Velvet Sundown, a tribute or counterpoint act responding to the controversy. MusicRadar described the group as part of a human-musician answer to the synthetic project and reported that attention and profits were intended to support real musicians. Bootleg Velvet Sundown is separate from the original project and should not be presented as its legitimate touring version.

How to investigate a suspicious streaming artist

  1. Check the artist profile, not just a playlist. Look for a coherent catalog, credits, release history and links to verifiable people or organizations.
  2. Look for evidence outside the platform. Live footage, venue listings, interviews, session credits and prior releases are stronger evidence of a real performing act than a polished biography or AI-looking image.
  3. Read disclosures and credits carefully. An AI label can indicate fully generated tracks, AI assistance or a platform’s own classification. An unmarked track is not automatically human-made.
  4. Use detection tools as signals, not courtroom proof. Deezer’s detector is relevant to its definition of fully AI-generated music, but no detector can by itself establish the identity of the people behind an artist or explain every production decision.
  5. Distinguish artist names from artist IDs. Similar names can belong to different profiles. The profile associated with The Velvet Sundown should not be merged with another “Velvet Sundown” account without independent confirmation.

What the controversy does—and does not—prove

  • It does show that a synthetic music project can be packaged convincingly as a band and gain substantial streaming attention before its construction is clear.
  • It does show that human creative direction can coexist with AI-generated or AI-assisted music, voices, lyrics, images and fictional storytelling.
  • It does not show that Spotify created or commissioned the project. The evidence shows that the project appeared on Spotify.
  • It does not show that Andrew Frelon was the creator. His reported hoax makes that identification especially unsafe.
  • It does not show that every track element came from Suno, that the operators broke copyright law, or that streams were fraudulent.
  • It does not show that a Spotify verification badge means a musician used no AI.

Why The Velvet Sundown matters

The project’s importance is less about whether its songs are enjoyable than about how streaming culture defines an artist. A band can now consist of a name, an image, a backstory, a catalog and a distribution account, even when there is no public human lineup behind those elements. That challenges the assumptions listeners bring from traditional music: that a band biography describes real people, that a voice belongs to a particular singer, and that a streaming profile corresponds to a performing act.

The likely long-term response is not a single perfect AI detector. It is a combination of clearer credits, platform labels, anti-impersonation controls, spam enforcement, profile-authenticity signals and better disclosure from artists and distributors. Those measures can improve transparency, but they remain incomplete. The Velvet Sundown demonstrated why the question is no longer simply “Is this song AI?” It is also “Who is claiming authorship, what exactly did humans do, and what kind of artist is the platform presenting to me?”

Frequently Asked Questions

Did Spotify create The Velvet Sundown?

No. Spotify’s evidence shows that The Velvet Sundown appeared on its platform; it does not show that Spotify created or commissioned the project. Spotify later introduced AI-related protections and disclosures in response to broader industry problems, but those policies are not evidence of authorship.

Are The Velvet Sundown’s four named members real musicians?

No reliable public evidence verifies those names as musicians who perform together. Gabe Farrow, Lennie West, Milo Rains and Orion “Rio” Del Mar were part of the project’s early fictional band biography and should not be repeated as confirmed human members.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does a Verified by Spotify badge prove that an artist is entirely human?

No. The badge is intended as a profile-authenticity and trust signal. Spotify has separately discussed AI disclosures in song credits, and it says those disclosures depend on information submitted by artists, labels, distributors or other partners. Verification does not prove that no AI was used.

Can an AI detector prove exactly how The Velvet Sundown’s music was made?

Not by itself. Deezer’s detector is aimed particularly at music it classifies as 100% AI-generated, and the company’s reported accuracy figures are its own claims. A detector cannot establish who operated an artist profile or explain the precise mix of human editing and AI generation.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: The Velvet Sundown is real as a released and operated streaming project, but not verified as a conventional four-member band. Its own account identifies it as a human-directed synthetic project made with AI assistance; the fictional members and the identity of the human operators remain unverified.
