Why Does My YouTube Keep Pausing Every Few Seconds? 8 Ways to Fix It

YouTube pausing every few seconds can mean buffering, a browser or app fault, device rendering trouble, or the normal “Continue watching?” prompt. Follow these tests in order to isolate the cause before buying new hardware.

If YouTube pauses every few seconds, first lower the video quality to 360p or 480p and watch a different video. If the pausing stops, your connection is probably not sustaining the previous quality. If the player shows “Video paused. Continue watching?”, however, nothing is necessarily broken: that is YouTube’s inactivity check.

Use this order to identify the cause: distinguish buffering from an inactivity prompt, test another video, lower the quality, restart the network and device, update YouTube or your browser, test without extensions, then compare Wi-Fi with cellular or Ethernet. Only after those checks should you investigate hardware, drivers, coverage equipment, or an obsolete streaming device.

First, identify what “pausing” means

What you see Most likely direction First test
A loading spinner appears and playback stops Buffering, an unstable connection, or a playback problem Select 360p or 480p and try another video
“Video paused. Continue watching?” appears YouTube’s inactivity check Select the prompt to continue; check Autoplay and viewing behavior
Playback stops when the screen locks or the app is backgrounded Power management or background-app behavior Keep the app in the foreground and check the device maker’s support instructions
Only one video pauses A problem associated with that video or its delivery path is possible Compare several other videos
Every video pauses on one device An app, browser, device, or local network issue is more likely Test the same account or video on another device

YouTube’s “Continue watching?” prompt is different from buffering. With Autoplay enabled, YouTube may ask for confirmation before 30 minutes on mobile, 60 minutes on the web, or 180 minutes on TV. A pause that begins immediately and repeats every few seconds is not normally explained by that prompt.

1. Lower the quality as a diagnostic test

In the video player, open Settings, choose Quality, and select 360p or 480p. Watch for several minutes.

  • If lower quality plays normally, your connection may be too slow or inconsistent for the previous resolution.
  • If lower quality also pauses, the problem may be Wi-Fi interference, packet loss, congestion, the app, the browser, or the device itself.
  • If only one video fails, switch to several unrelated videos before changing network equipment.

YouTube lists approximate sustained connection requirements of 0.7 Mbps for 360p, 1.1 Mbps for 480p, 2.5 Mbps for 720p, 5 Mbps for 1080p, and 20 Mbps for 4K. These are useful reference points, not guarantees. A speed test can show a high peak speed while playback still suffers from Wi-Fi interference, packet loss, congestion, or short interruptions.

Run a speed test at the same time and location where YouTube fails. Also compare the result with playback over cellular data or a wired connection when those options are available. A quality reduction that fixes the problem is both a temporary workaround and evidence that the connection cannot reliably sustain the original stream.

2. Restart YouTube, the device, and the network

  1. Close and reopen the YouTube app or browser tab.
  2. Restart the phone, tablet, computer, smart TV, or streaming stick.
  3. Restart the router and modem if multiple devices are affected.
  4. Pause large downloads, cloud backups, game downloads, and other streams.

For a TV or streaming device, unplug the power cable, wait at least 30 seconds, and reconnect it. A restart clears temporary app and network states; it does not repair a slow internet plan or weak Wi-Fi coverage, but it is a fast way to eliminate a transient fault.

Use the scope of the failure to choose your next step:

  • Several devices pause on the same Wi-Fi: investigate the router, modem, wireless signal, congestion, or internet service.
  • Only one device pauses: focus on its app, browser, storage, operating system, drivers, or device settings.
  • Only one room has the problem: compare playback beside the router. A location-dependent result points toward Wi-Fi coverage or interference.

3. Update the software

Install available updates for the YouTube app, web browser, operating system, smart-TV firmware, and streaming-device software. YouTube identifies current versions of Chrome, Firefox, or Safari and a good internet connection as baseline conditions for web playback.

On Android, Google’s general app troubleshooting sequence is:

  1. Restart the phone.
  2. Check for Android system updates.
  3. Update YouTube in the Play Store.
  4. Open Settings > Apps > YouTube and choose Force stop.
  5. Open Storage and clear YouTube’s cache.

Android menu names vary by manufacturer. Clearing cache is relatively low-risk. Clearing the app’s storage or data is more disruptive because it can remove app data and reset settings, so use it only after the less destructive steps.

Older phones, tablets, televisions, and streaming devices may have limited YouTube support or reduced playback capability. Check YouTube’s supported-device information and the device manufacturer’s support page before blaming the internet connection or replacing hardware.

4. Test YouTube without browser extensions

On a computer, open YouTube in an Incognito or Private window and play the same type of video. This temporarily tests the browser with extensions and much of the normal profile state out of the way.

  • It works privately: an extension, cached site data, or browser-profile setting is a likely cause.
  • It fails in every browser: investigate the network or computer rather than one browser.
  • It fails only in one browser: update that browser, clear its cache and cookies, and inspect its extensions.

Ad blockers and other extensions can interfere with playback. In the normal browser, disable extensions and re-enable them one at a time until the problem returns. Clearing cache and cookies can fix loading or formatting problems, but it may sign you out of websites and remove saved site settings.

Chrome-specific rendering test

If YouTube is choppy, Chrome freezes, or other pages show rendering problems, close unused tabs and applications and remove unnecessary extensions. Then open Chrome’s settings, search for hardware acceleration, turn off Use hardware acceleration when available, and restart Chrome. This is a targeted test, not a permanent recommendation for every YouTube problem. If disabling it changes nothing, turn it back on.

5. Check the device’s workload and storage

Close resource-heavy applications, unused browser tabs, games, and video-editing tools. A computer or phone that is short on memory may pause playback even when the internet connection is adequate.

On Android devices, check free storage as well. Android guidance notes that devices can begin having problems when less than 10% of storage remains free. Low storage is especially relevant when YouTube pauses alongside general sluggishness, app crashes, overheating, or screen freezes.

On a smart TV or streaming stick, update or reinstall the YouTube app, power-cycle the device, and compare YouTube with another streaming app. If several streaming apps fail, the device, network, or manufacturer firmware is more likely to be responsible than YouTube alone.

6. Compare Wi-Fi with cellular or Ethernet

Move close to the router and test again. If playback improves, try the less-congested Wi-Fi band if your router offers one, reduce interference, and pause other network activity. A wired test is even more useful because it removes local Wi-Fi conditions from the experiment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Using an Ethernet cable between the router and a compatible computer, TV, or streaming device can tell you whether the wireless link is involved. The cable tests or replaces the local link; it does not guarantee a faster internet connection from your provider.

  • Ethernet works but Wi-Fi fails: investigate router placement, interference, wireless coverage, or a damaged cable.
  • Playback fails on Ethernet too: look at internet congestion, the app, browser, device, or service interruption.
  • Playback works near the router but not in one room: a coverage solution may help.

A Wi-Fi range extender or mesh Wi-Fi system is appropriate only when the evidence points to a dead zone or weak signal. It will not fix an overloaded internet connection, an ISP outage, or a malfunctioning YouTube app. Do not buy networking equipment before doing the location and wired comparisons.

7. Use “Stats for nerds” when the cause is still unclear

YouTube’s diagnostic overlay can provide useful clues. On desktop, right-click the video and select Stats for nerds. In the YouTube app, enable Stats for nerds in Settings, then open it from the player’s More menu.

While the pause occurs, compare the displayed connection speed, current and optimal resolution, dropped frames, and buffer behavior:

  • Buffer depletion or a low connection estimate: points toward an unstable or insufficient network path.
  • A healthy buffer with many dropped frames: points more toward device, browser, or graphics rendering.
  • Normal figures but pauses in only one browser or app: suggests a software or profile problem.

These readings are clues rather than an automatic diagnosis. Capture the information during the failure, not only after playback has recovered.

Special case: YouTube TV and live programming

YouTube TV has additional variables because live streams can have less buffered content available than on-demand videos. Reducing broadcast delay can make interruptions more likely even on a good connection.

YouTube TV’s guidance lists approximately 3 Mbps as a minimum for standard-definition viewing, 7 Mbps for one HD stream, 13 Mbps for reliable HD while other devices use the network, and 25 Mbps or more for 4K Plus viewing. Multiple simultaneous streams can rebuffer when the network is busy.

For YouTube TV, check the following:

  1. Confirm that the current playback location is accurate.
  2. Update or reinstall the YouTube TV app.
  3. Restart the streaming device, router, and modem.
  4. Restore the default broadcast-delay setting if low-delay mode is enabled.
  5. Test another channel and an on-demand program to determine whether the issue is limited to one live stream.

When drivers or hardware are genuinely worth investigating

Do not start with a driver updater, a new router, or a replacement television. YouTube’s first-line advice is to update the browser, app, firmware, and system software, then isolate the network and device.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

On Windows, driver troubleshooting becomes more reasonable when YouTube pauses alongside broader symptoms such as display glitches, crashes, audio failures, network dropouts, or problems affecting other video applications. Prefer Windows Update and the computer, graphics-card, network-adapter, or motherboard manufacturer’s official driver support first.

As an optional third-party path, Outbyte Driver Updater is intended for Windows 7–11 systems and documents driver scanning, recommendations from official sources, and backup and restore functions. It is not necessary for ordinary YouTube buffering and is not a guaranteed fix. Treat it as a Windows-only troubleshooting option after the standard checks, not as the first answer.

A fast decision tree

  1. Does the player say “Continue watching?” Select it; this is normal inactivity behavior.
  2. Does lowering quality fix playback? Investigate bandwidth, congestion, and Wi-Fi stability.
  3. Do other videos work? The original video or its delivery path may be the outlier.
  4. Do other devices fail on the same network? Restart and test the router, modem, and connection.
  5. Does private browsing fix a computer? Disable extensions and clear the affected browser’s site data.
  6. Does Ethernet or cellular work while Wi-Fi fails? Investigate wireless coverage and interference.
  7. Does only one device fail? Update, restart, clear the app cache, free storage, and check device support.
  8. Does a healthy buffer accompany dropped frames? Investigate rendering, hardware acceleration, system load, and—if wider symptoms exist—drivers.

Replacing hardware is justified only when these comparisons identify a physical limitation, obsolete device, failing network component, or inadequate coverage. Otherwise, the problem is more likely to be fixed by a quality change, restart, update, extension test, or network adjustment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does YouTube keep pausing every few seconds?

Usually, either the connection cannot sustain the selected video quality or the browser/app is interfering with playback. Lower the quality, test another video, restart the device and router, update YouTube, and try a private browser window without extensions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is “Video paused. Continue watching?” a buffering problem?

No. “Video paused. Continue watching?” is YouTube’s inactivity check. It may appear before 30 minutes on mobile, 60 minutes on the web, or 180 minutes on TV when Autoplay is enabled. Repeated pauses with a loading spinner point to a different problem.

How do I stop YouTube from buffering?

Select Settings in the video player, choose Quality, and temporarily select 360p or 480p. If playback becomes smooth, the connection is likely struggling with the previous resolution or competing network traffic.

Can a browser extension make YouTube pause?

Open YouTube in an Incognito or Private window. If it works there, disable browser extensions—especially ad blockers—and re-enable them individually. You can also clear the affected browser’s cache and cookies, remembering that this may sign you out of websites.

How can I tell whether Wi-Fi is causing YouTube pauses?

Test YouTube near the router, over cellular data, or with Ethernet. If Ethernet works but Wi-Fi fails, investigate wireless coverage and interference. A range extender or mesh system helps a weak-signal area, but not an overloaded internet connection or broken app.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

The quickest honest fix sequence is: lower YouTube to 360p or 480p, test another video, restart YouTube and the device, restart the router or modem, update the app or browser, try a private window with extensions disabled, clear the relevant cache, compare Wi-Fi with cellular or Ethernet, and then inspect Stats for nerds. If the screen says “Video paused. Continue watching?”, it is an inactivity prompt—not ordinary buffering.
