Choose OBS if you need Windows, macOS, or Linux support and a free, open-source tool; choose XSplit if its Windows workflow and features suit your production and its current license terms meet your needs. Either way, a desktop setup depends on the computer, network, monitoring, and recovery plan—not just the encoder.
OBS vs XSplit at a glance
| Decision | OBS Studio | XSplit Broadcaster |
|---|---|---|
| Operating systems | Windows, macOS, and Linux, according to the OBS Project. | Windows, according to the XSplit product page. |
| Price and license | Free and open source. | Free tier plus monthly, yearly, and lifetime paid tiers; check the product page for current pricing and terms. |
| Free-tier limits | The OBS Project describes the software as free to use. | XSplit says free use supports up to 720p without a watermark; above that, a small logo is added. Its support FAQ also describes restrictions including no commercial use under the free license and a maximum of four scenes. Confirm current terms before relying on them. |
| Production workflow | Real-time capture and mixing, scenes, transitions, configurable settings, and an API for community plugins and scripts. | Drag-and-drop source composition, custom RTMP, multiple outputs, built-in chat plugins, and OBS scene import are listed; some features depend on license tier. |

Which encoder should you choose?
Choose OBS when platform flexibility or cost matters
OBS is the clearer fit if you need a choice of Windows, macOS, or Linux, want to avoid a software license cost, or value an open-source, configurable workflow. Its flexibility also means you should test the complete scene, audio, and output setup you intend to leave running.
Choose XSplit when its Windows workflow fits your production
XSplit may suit a Windows-based production if its composition and built-in features match how you work. Before using it for a public or commercial channel, verify the current license tier against your output resolution, branding tolerance, commercial-use needs, scene count, and any features you rely on. Prices and license terms can change.
Do not choose on an assumed uptime advantage
The available product information does not establish that one desktop encoder is more dependable for a continuous broadcast. Your operating system, machine stability, upload connection, encoder configuration, power, monitoring, and ability to respond to an interruption all matter. Auto-start and Auto-stop can control when a YouTube stream starts or stops; they do not establish recovery after a computer, application, or network failure.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Set up either encoder for YouTube Live
- Prepare your YouTube stream. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or select the stream. On YouTube’s stream settings page, copy the stream key and enter it only in the intended encoder. YouTube describes the key as the stream’s password and address, so keep it private and reset it if it is exposed.
- Choose a compatible output. YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS and H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video, up to 60 fps. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the encrypted extension of RTMP, and CBR (constant bitrate). Use a 2-second keyframe interval; do not exceed 4 seconds. Select settings supported by both your encoder and the stream configuration.
- Set bitrate for the actual resolution and frame rate. YouTube’s H.264 examples include 6 Mbps minimum and 17 Mbps recommended for 1080p at 60 fps; 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended for 1080p at 30 fps; and 3 Mbps minimum and 8 Mbps recommended for 720p at 60 fps. These are resolution- and frame-rate-specific examples, not one-size-fits-all values. Use YouTube’s current settings page for the range matching your chosen codec and output.
- Check your connection’s headroom. YouTube says the total stream bitrate must fit your available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% headroom. If the connection cannot sustain the selected output consistently, reduce the resolution, frame rate, or bitrate rather than running at the limit.
- Test the whole production before leaving it unattended. Run a representative test with the intended scenes, audio, motion, resolution, frame rate, encoder, and network. Preview it in Live Control Room, inspect stream-health messages, and if recording a local archive, confirm that the file is growing. YouTube’s guidance says to monitor stream health and audio and video quality during the event.
- Set expectations for interruptions. Decide who will notice and respond if the stream or computer fails. YouTube’s Auto-start and Auto-stop settings may automate stream start and stop behavior, but they are not a substitute for a recovery plan.
Keeping a desktop stream running around the clock
With OBS or XSplit, the encoder runs on the computer where it is installed. A continuous broadcast therefore depends on that computer and its connection remaining available, along with someone or something able to notice and address failures. Neither the cited product pages nor YouTube’s encoder listing establishes a 24/7 uptime guarantee for either application. Test the real setup and plan for monitoring and recovery rather than treating a successful short test as proof of uninterrupted operation.
