The faceoff turned physical, but the match itself was not part of SmackDown. The episode also saw the MFTs win the WWE Tag Team Championship, Carmelo Hayes retain the United States title, and Randy Orton deliver RKOs after the closing match ended without a decision.
Rhodes and Fatu’s faceoff set up their next-night match
During an interview about losing the Undisputed WWE Championship and his plans to win it back, Cody Rhodes was interrupted by Jacob Fatu. Rhodes blamed Fatu for costing him the title and said their match should be for the championship. Fatu countered that Drew McIntyre was already out before he got involved, and pushed back against being portrayed as out of control.
“Naw, trust me, I’m very in control,” Fatu said, according to Wade Keller’s PWTorch report. The exchange escalated into a brawl; WWE’s event page described the confrontation as the two calling each other out and brawling on SmackDown.
WWE said Fatu’s attack on McIntyre during the Steel Cage portion of their Three Stages of Hell match inadvertently cost Rhodes the Undisputed WWE Championship. The advertised Jan. 24 bout at Saturday Night’s Main Event was to be the first one-on-one match between Rhodes and Fatu.
