Ryan Gosling wanted Slash there. Gosling described Slash as one of the elements he pitched for the elaborate 2024 Oscars number, and Slash had already played guitar on the recorded “I’m Just Ken.” His appearance was therefore both part of Gosling’s live-performance idea and a continuation of his role on the song.
Why Gosling wanted Slash in the performance
In a March 27, 2026 report, Guitar World relayed Gosling’s remarks from an interview with Josh Horowitz. Gosling said, “I was just hoping that Slash would show up.”
Gosling also recalled pitching a bigger concept: “I basically sold them on this idea that the only way I could do it is if we had – I forget what the number was – but, like, a hundred Kens, and a Busby Berkeley number and Slash.” In other words, Slash was part of the ambitious show Gosling proposed, alongside a large ensemble of Kens and a choreographed spectacle—not an unrelated celebrity cameo. Guitar World also quoted Gosling recalling that he was told Slash would get on a plane and do it.
These quotations are Gosling’s remarks as reported by Guitar World; the report attributes them to his Horowitz interview.

Slash had played on the recorded song, too
Slash’s presence made sense beyond the stage concept. ABC Audio identifies Slash and Wolfgang Van Halen as guitarists on the recorded version of “I’m Just Ken” and reports that both joined Gosling and Mark Ronson onstage. Slash’s live appearance connected the Oscars performance to the track’s original recording.
Who was announced, and who appeared onstage?
The Academy’s February 28, 2024 announcement named Gosling and Ronson as performers. During the broadcast, Slash and Wolfgang Van Halen joined them. That difference helps explain why Slash could feel like a surprise to viewers: the advance announcement named two performers, while the stage lineup included additional musicians.
