A continuous YouTube loop sends data from your Windows VPS to YouTube for as long as it streams. At a steady 1 Mbps, that is about 10.8 decimal GB per day or 324 decimal GB in 30 days. Multiply those estimates by your stream’s bitrate: a 6 Mbps stream uses about 1.944 decimal TB in 30 days, and a 10 Mbps stream about 3.24 decimal TB. These are arithmetic estimates, not provider guarantees; allow headroom for overhead, reconnects, and other server traffic.
Bandwidth and data transfer are different requirements
Throughput: the rate your VPS must sustain
Throughput is the rate at which the server can send data, commonly advertised as a port speed or network limit. Your VPS needs to sustain the chosen encoder bitrate, with room for fluctuations and other traffic. A high advertised port speed does not by itself guarantee that a particular virtual machine will sustain it continuously.
Transfer allowance: the volume included over time
Transfer allowance is the volume a plan permits during a billing period. A VPS can have enough throughput for a stream but too little included monthly transfer, or ample transfer allowance but insufficient sustained outbound capacity. Check both independently.
Estimate monthly transfer from the encoder bitrate
For a steady stream, bitrate multiplied by time gives the approximate amount sent. Using decimal units, the calculation for 1 Mbps over one day is:

Over a 30-day month, that baseline is about 324 decimal GB. Multiply by the bitrate in Mbps to estimate the stream’s transfer:

These calculations assume uninterrupted streaming at the stated bitrate. They are not measurements or guarantees of what a provider will bill. Add headroom for protocol overhead, reconnects, monitoring, and any other traffic from the VPS. Providers may use different measurement conventions; decimal GB and TB are not interchangeable with binary GiB and TiB, so check the unit used in the plan’s terms.
Choose an encoder bitrate that fits the stream
YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends different settings according to resolution, frame rate, and codec. For H.264, its recommendations include 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps, 6 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps, and 6 Mbps for 720p at 60 fps. Those are recommendations, not a requirement that every loop use those exact settings. A lower bitrate reduces transfer but can also reduce image quality; choose based on the video and the quality you need.

YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), testing the upload bitrate and stream behavior before going live, and monitoring stream health. For the standard RTMP/RTMPS setting, it recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension of RTMP. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
Use the actual outgoing bitrate configured in your encoder for the estimate. A resolution label alone does not determine transfer: the bitrate and the hours streamed do.

Count the VPS-to-YouTube stream, not each viewer
In the standard setup, the VPS sends one encoded ingest stream to YouTube. YouTube then transcodes the live stream for viewers, so the VPS transfer estimate is based on the outgoing ingest bitrate, not that bitrate multiplied by the audience size. This does not include separate restreaming, local monitoring, or unrelated server traffic.

Provider policies vary, and documentation for one product should not be treated as a universal VPS rule. For example, DigitalOcean documents included outbound transfer, free inbound transfer, and outbound overage billing for Droplets. Azure describes VM bandwidth allocation in terms of outbound traffic and distinguishes it from inbound traffic. These examples do not establish the terms of other hosts or every Windows product.

- Outbound capacity: Confirm the sustained egress rate available to the specific VM, not just a headline port-speed figure.
- Included transfer: Check whether the allowance counts outbound data only or total traffic, whether it is per instance or pooled, and which billing period applies.
- Limit behavior: Find out whether reaching the limit leads to overage charges, throttling, suspension, or a required plan change.
- Windows image and license: Verify that the exact plan supports Windows and whether the Windows license is included in the quoted price. Windows licensing charges are not comparable across providers based on the information here.
- Compute and recovery: Confirm the VM can encode at your chosen resolution and frame rate, and decide how you will recover if the instance, encoder, or connection stops. No provider’s CPU capacity or recovery performance is established here.
There are no comparable current Windows VPS prices or per-plan egress guarantees established here, so compare the live terms for the specific region and Windows SKU before committing.
Common planning mistakes and fixes
- Choosing by port speed alone: Check the monthly transfer allowance and limit policy as well as sustained outbound capacity.
- Treating the estimate as a cap: The arithmetic excludes overhead and other traffic. Add a safety margin and review the provider’s measurement method.
- Multiplying by viewer count: For the standard ingest path, estimate the VPS upload to YouTube, not the viewer-side delivery YouTube handles.
- Assuming all “GB” figures use the same unit: Check whether the provider quotes decimal GB/TB or binary GiB/TiB.
- Ignoring image quality or stream health: Select bitrate for the intended resolution and frame rate, test before going live, and monitor YouTube’s stream-health indicators.
- Assuming a dropped stream will restart itself: Confirm that your encoder or hosting arrangement has a recovery method, and test it rather than assuming the VPS will resume automatically.
