Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →The cause depends on which frames are dropping. In OBS, rising Dropped Frames (Network) points to an unstable connection to YouTube’s ingest server or a bitrate the route cannot sustain. Rendering or encoding lag instead means the VM or OBS cannot render or encode fast enough. Check the OBS counters and YouTube stream health before changing VM size, bitrate, or encoder settings.
Identify which frames are being lost
A choppy-looking stream does not by itself prove that the network is the problem. OBS distinguishes connection drops from rendering and encoding performance problems; each needs a different fix.
- Dropped Frames (Network): OBS describes these as a connection problem between OBS and the remote stream server, or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain. Check the VM’s actual outbound path and the stream bitrate.
- Rendering or encoding lag: The scene or encoder is not keeping up with the output settings. Investigate resolution, frame rate, scene complexity, filters, and available CPU or GPU resources—not network tuning alone.
- YouTube stream-health warning: Read the specific status and configuration issue in Live Control Room. A warning can point to an encoder setting even when OBS is not reporting network drops.
For OBS’s explanations of network drops and encoding performance, see OBS Stream Connection Troubleshooting and OBS Encoding Performance Troubleshooting.
Diagnose the stream in order
- Record the OBS indicator that is increasing. Open OBS’s statistics and note whether network-dropped frames or rendering/encoding lag is climbing. If you use OBS logs, check for the corresponding connection or performance messages. Do not treat every stutter as network loss.
- Check YouTube Live Control Room. Look at stream health and read any issue details. The YouTube Live Streaming API defines health states including
good,ok,bad, andnoData, along with configuration issues.noDatameans YouTube’s live streaming backend has no health information for the stream; it does not identify a specific cause by itself. See the YouTube LiveStreams API reference. - If network drops are rising, compare bitrate with capacity. Check the OBS output bitrate against YouTube’s recommendation for the stream’s codec, resolution, and frame rate. Then investigate the Compute Engine instance’s external egress constraints, route to the selected YouTube ingest server, and achieved throughput and stability.
- If rendering or encoding lag is rising, reduce workload. Try a lower output resolution or frame rate, simplify scenes or filters, and check whether the VM has adequate CPU/GPU resources and the encoder support required by the chosen settings.
- Test with representative content. Before the next event, test with audio and movement similar to the planned stream. Monitor OBS counters and YouTube health during the test. YouTube Help explicitly advises: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”
Check YouTube’s encoder settings against the stream
YouTube’s recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate; use the current row matching your output rather than applying one bitrate to every stream. The following examples are recommendations from YouTube Help, accessed 2026, not guaranteed throughput for a particular VM-to-ingest route:

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| Output and codec | YouTube recommended bitrate | YouTube minimum bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 60 fps, H.264 | 17 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps, AV1 or H.265 | 12 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps, H.264 | 8 Mbps | 3 Mbps |
YouTube’s encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264/H.265/AV1, up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. It recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. Confirm that the encoder configuration and YouTube’s issue details agree. See YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for its current table and guidance.
Understand Compute Engine’s egress limits
Google Cloud documents bandwidth limits per VM instance, not per vNIC or IP address, for the common single-physical-NIC configuration. The machine type sets a maximum possible egress rate, but Google notes that the maximum is achievable only in specific situations. Limits and routes vary by machine series and destination. A published ceiling is not a speed test, and high internal VM-to-VM rates do not establish the rate available to an external YouTube ingest endpoint.

Google’s Tier_1 networking documentation describes particular high-bandwidth scenarios with conditions such as same-zone VMs, VPC routing, and internal IP destinations. Those conditions should not be read as a promise of equivalent throughput to YouTube. Check the actual VM type and the outbound route relevant to the stream. See Google Cloud’s Compute Engine network bandwidth documentation and its Tier_1 configuration documentation.
Without the machine type, region, route, configured bitrate, achieved outbound throughput, and OBS/YouTube diagnostics, it is not possible to conclude that the VM is too small—or that Compute Engine as a whole is too slow for YouTube streaming.

Common symptoms and the next fix to try
| What you observe | Likely area to investigate | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| OBS network-dropped frames increase | Connection stability, external route, available egress, or bitrate | Compare the configured bitrate with YouTube’s matching recommendation; check actual outbound throughput and route to the selected ingest endpoint. |
| OBS reports rendering or encoding lag | Scene rendering or encoder workload | Lower resolution or frame rate, simplify scenes or filters, and examine VM CPU/GPU resources and encoder support. |
| YouTube reports a configuration issue | Codec, bitrate, frame rate, or another encoder setting | Use the health issue details and compare the encoder settings with YouTube’s current guidance. |
YouTube health says noData |
YouTube has no health information for that stream | Do not infer a specific fault from this status alone; check that the stream is reaching YouTube and inspect OBS’s counters and connection logs. |
| The stream stutters, but no relevant counter or health warning has been checked | Cause not yet established | Monitor OBS statistics and Live Control Room during a representative test before changing settings. |
