Store a YouTube stream key as an encrypted secret, give access only to the EC2-hosted encoder that needs it, and use RTMPS to encrypt the connection to YouTube when your encoder supports it. If the key is exposed, reset it in YouTube Live Control Room and replace the value used by the encoder.
Why a YouTube stream key needs protection
YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” The encoder uses the key to send a feed to your channel, so treat it as a credential: do not put it in public code, screenshots, logs, or configuration that is accessible more broadly than necessary. See YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings.
Store the key in AWS Systems Manager Parameter Store
Use a Parameter Store SecureString parameter for the key rather than baking it into an EC2 image or committing it to a source file. AWS says SecureString values are encrypted using AWS KMS. For maximum security, AWS recommends a customer-managed KMS key. See AWS Systems Manager security best practices.
- Create a SecureString parameter. In Systems Manager Parameter Store, create a parameter for the YouTube stream key and choose an appropriate KMS key. Keep the parameter name and value out of public code and documentation.
- Make the EC2-hosted encoder retrieve it when needed. Configure the encoder’s startup or runtime process to read the parameter, rather than embedding the key in an image or source file. Avoid printing the retrieved value to logs. The exact EC2 identity attachment and retrieval steps depend on your setup; use the current AWS EC2 and Systems Manager documentation for those implementation details.
- Restrict retrieval and decryption. Use IAM and KMS key policies to allow only the workload identity that needs this parameter to read it and decrypt it with the corresponding key. Limit access to the specific parameter and key; do not grant broad access to unrelated users or workloads.
Use RTMPS between the encoder and YouTube
In YouTube Live Control Room, select the RTMPS stream URL if your encoder supports RTMPS, then configure the encoder with that URL and the stream key. YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP over a TLS/SSL connection that provides encryption. This protects the connection in transit; it does not replace storing the key securely. See YouTube Help: Encrypt your stream using RTMPS.

Reset an exposed key
If the key appears in a repository, log, screen share, or another unintended place, reset it in YouTube Live Control Room and update the encoder to use the replacement. YouTube says a channel owner or manager must reset the key. Follow YouTube’s stream settings instructions.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded videos playing as a YouTube live stream, StreamNeo is a separate cloud service—not an EC2 secret-storage method. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo keeps the stream running without a computer or home connection left on. Any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps streams as made at one flat price per slot; if YouTube drops the stream, automatic recovery is included. The first day is free with no card.
