How to Loop Pre-Recorded Videos on YouTube Live from an Amazon EC2 Instance

To loop a prerecorded video on YouTube Live from Amazon EC2, run FFmpeg on the instance with -re and -stream_loop -1 before the input file, then publish to the RTMPS URL and stream key for your YouTube event. The file will loop at real-time speed on the EC2 host; YouTube still controls the live event, so this does not guarantee an unlimited or uninterrupted broadcast.

What you need before starting

  • A YouTube channel eligible for live streaming. YouTube requires channel verification and no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. Enabling live streaming for the first time can take up to 24 hours. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips.
  • An Amazon EC2 instance with FFmpeg installed, sufficient capacity to encode your video in real time, and outbound network capacity for the chosen stream bitrate. The appropriate instance type depends on your source and encoding settings; no particular EC2 size or current cost is established here.
  • A video file you have the right to stream, stored on the instance or accessible to the FFmpeg process.
  • The stream URL and stream key for the encoder-based YouTube event. Use the RTMPS URL supplied by Live Control Room when available, and keep the key private.

AWS’s prerecorded-video example uses Amazon IVS as its destination. Its looping and encoding pattern is useful, but its IVS endpoint and key are not for YouTube. Use the YouTube URL and key for this workflow. AWS’s example and production caveat.

Create the YouTube event and get its stream details

  1. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule a live stream using encoder software. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
  2. Copy the server URL and stream key shown for that stream. Treat the key like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to broadcast to your stream.
  3. Prefer the RTMPS server URL shown in Live Control Room. RTMPS encrypts the connection; do not assume that an ordinary RTMP URL is encrypted. See YouTube’s RTMPS instructions.

Run FFmpeg on the EC2 instance

Install FFmpeg using the package manager or build appropriate for your EC2 operating system, then make the authorized video file available at a known path. Installation commands vary by operating system and FFmpeg build, so check the current documentation for your environment rather than applying an unverified one-size-fits-all command.

Use this command structure, replacing every placeholder and tuning the encoding values for your source and YouTube’s current guidance. This is a template, not a tested EC2 command:

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i "/path/to/video.mp4"
  -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v VIDEO_BITRATE
  -maxrate VIDEO_BITRATE -bufsize VIDEO_BUFFER
  -pix_fmt yuv420p -g KEYFRAME_INTERVAL
  -c:a aac -b:a AUDIO_BITRATE
  -f flv "YOUR_YOUTUBE_RTMPS_URL/YOUR_STREAM_KEY"
  • -re reads the prerecorded input at its native frame rate instead of sending the file as fast as the instance can process it.
  • -stream_loop -1 tells FFmpeg to loop that input indefinitely. Both are input options and must appear before the matching -i. FFmpeg defines -1 as infinite looping in its documentation.
  • The video and audio codec, bitrate, pixel format, buffer, and keyframe values after the input are illustrative. They are not universal settings; set them to match the source, YouTube’s recommendations, and the instance’s capacity.
  • Use the exact RTMPS destination and key from Live Control Room. Do not copy an Amazon IVS endpoint into the command.

Choose encoding and network settings

YouTube’s encoder guidance supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video, frame rates up to 60 fps, AAC or MP3 audio, and constant-bitrate encoding. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Match resolution and frame rate to the source and the capacity available for encoding and upload. Consult YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for its current recommendations.

  • Bitrate: Choose a target appropriate to the resolution, frame rate, codec, and source. The instance must sustain that output, and the outbound connection needs headroom.
  • Keyframes: Set the encoder’s keyframe interval to two seconds where practical, and keep it within YouTube’s four-second maximum recommendation.
  • Network capacity: YouTube recommends 20% bandwidth headroom above the total stream bitrate. Check outbound capacity rather than assuming the instance’s network can sustain the stream.
  • Latency: Select a latency mode based on the event’s needs; YouTube notes that lower latency can increase playback buffering.

YouTube recommends testing and monitoring the stream’s health. Review its streaming tips and inspect the preview and health indicators before taking the event live.

Start the broadcast and monitor it

  1. Run FFmpeg with the completed command and watch its output for connection or encoding errors.
  2. In Live Control Room, wait for the incoming video preview and check picture, sound, and stream health.
  3. Start the live event in YouTube when the preview is ready. Keep monitoring audio, video, and stream health while it runs.
  4. When the event is over, stop FFmpeg and end the event in Live Control Room as appropriate.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. This is an archive condition, not a guarantee that a longer continuous broadcast will be archived. FFmpeg can loop the local input indefinitely, but that alone does not establish an unlimited YouTube broadcast duration or guarantee that EC2 will run without interruption. YouTube’s setup and operating guidance is at Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder and YouTube live streaming tips.

Troubleshoot common problems

  • YouTube receives no video: Confirm FFmpeg is running, the file path is correct, and the command uses the exact server URL and stream key from the event. Confirm that the URL is the YouTube destination, not an IVS endpoint.
  • Connection fails or is not encrypted: Check the RTMPS URL copied from Live Control Room and ensure the FFmpeg build supports the required protocol. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted ingestion; see its RTMPS guidance.
  • The video runs too fast or the loop does not behave as intended: Put -re -stream_loop -1 before the corresponding -i. These options apply to the input, and -re is important for reading the prerecorded file in real time.
  • Playback buffers or stream health is poor: Check whether the instance can encode the selected resolution and frame rate in real time, then verify outbound capacity and preserve YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom above total bitrate. Reduce the target bitrate or encoding load if the available capacity cannot sustain the settings.
  • The event will not enable: Check channel verification and whether live-streaming restrictions apply. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours.
  • The broadcast stops unexpectedly: Check FFmpeg output and Live Control Room health indicators, then verify that the EC2 process and network connection remain active. Automatic looping does not restart a failed FFmpeg process or guarantee uninterrupted instance operation.

Cost and operational considerations

EC2 expenses depend on the instance, storage, data transfer, and run duration. Choose compute capacity that can encode the source in real time and account for the entire period you intend to run it. No particular instance size or current price is established here, so check AWS’s current pricing and configuration details for your region and setup before estimating cost.
