Wind River: The Next Chapter does not yet have a confirmed U.S. release date. The sequel is set on the same Wyoming reservation but shifts the focus to Chip Hanson, played by Martin Sensmeier, as he helps investigate a series of ritualistic murders.
Release date: still no confirmed U.S. date
Wind River: The Next Chapter is a real sequel to the 2017 crime thriller Wind River, but it still does not have a confirmed U.S. release date. As of August 13, 2026, theatrical, streaming, digital-rental, Blu-ray, 4K Blu-ray, and DVD availability remain unannounced in the sources reviewed.
That means there is no reliable year, month, quarter, distributor, or streaming service to publish as the film’s release plan. Reports that the movie was “coming soon” should not be treated as an official date. Jason Clarke said in 2025 that legal issues had delayed the project and suggested that its release was approaching, but no authoritative date or distribution announcement had followed in the available reporting.
What is Wind River: The Next Chapter about?
The sequel moves the story’s focus to Chip Hanson, played by Martin Sensmeier. Chip was connected to the first film through his sister Natalie Hanson, whose death helped set the original investigation in motion. In The Next Chapter, he is a newly minted tracker for the U.S. Fish & Game service.

The plot begins when a series of ritualistic murders terrorizes the Wind River reservation and remains unsolved. The FBI turns to Chip for help, drawing him into a dangerous conflict involving federal authorities, a vigilante, and the reservation community he calls home.
The premise carries forward the original film’s central ingredients: a murder investigation, an unforgiving landscape, tensions between outside authorities and the reservation community, and difficult moral choices. However, the available synopsis does not identify the killer, explain the ritual, state how many victims there are, or reveal the ending. Those details should not be presented as confirmed plot information.
Cast: who is in the sequel?
The reported principal cast includes:
- Martin Sensmeier as Chip Hanson, the returning character and new central protagonist.
- Jason Clarke in a principal role that has not been fully characterized in the available production materials.
- Scott Eastwood in a principal role that has not been fully characterized.
- Chaske Spencer in a principal role that has not been fully characterized.
- Gil Birmingham, who is listed as returning from the original film.
- Alan Ruck.
- Kali Reis.
- Tatanka Means.
The currently available cast information does not provide a complete character-by-character breakdown. In particular, it is safer to distinguish between actors listed in production materials and character details that have not been officially described.

Will Jeremy Renner and Elizabeth Olsen return?
Jeremy Renner and Elizabeth Olsen have not been confirmed in the available sequel materials. Their names do not appear in the current production-company cast block, but that omission is not the same as a formal announcement that they are excluded.
Readers should therefore be cautious with headlines describing the project as a Renner-Olsen reunion. The clearly identifiable returning connection is Sensmeier’s Chip Hanson, with Gil Birmingham also listed by the production company.
Is Taylor Sheridan writing or directing the sequel?
No. Taylor Sheridan wrote and directed the 2017 Wind River, but the sequel’s listed creative team is different.

The most accurate description is that Wind River: The Next Chapter is a sequel to Sheridan’s film—not a new Taylor Sheridan-written or Taylor Sheridan-directed movie. Sheridan’s connection in the available production information is to the original.
How does the sequel connect to the 2017 film?
The first Wind River followed FBI agent Jane Banner, played by Elizabeth Olsen, and experienced game tracker Cory Lambert, played by Jeremy Renner, as they investigated a murder on a Native American reservation. Sheridan wrote and directed that film.

Chip Hanson is now working as a tracker for the U.S. Fish & Game service and becomes involved in a new series of killings.
It is therefore best understood as a character-linked continuation rather than a direct continuation centered on Cory Lambert and Jane Banner. The setting, themes, and Chip Hanson connect the films, but the available evidence does not support marketing the sequel as a return to the original leads.
What can you watch or buy before the sequel?
Because the sequel has no confirmed consumer release, the practical way to prepare is to revisit the 2017 film. Lionsgate released the original on Digital HD on October 31, 2017, followed by Blu-ray with Digital HD and DVD on November 14, 2017.

For viewers who prefer a physical copy, the Wind River Blu-ray is the most directly relevant purchase. It is the original film, not the sequel, and should not be described as including sequel footage or a preview. Price, seller, stock, region compatibility, and current purchasing eligibility can change, so those details should be checked at the time of purchase.

Bottom line
Wind River: The Next Chapter has a documented title, premise, director, writers, production company, and ensemble cast, but it does not yet have a confirmed U.S. release date or announced platform. Martin Sensmeier leads the story as Chip Hanson, who becomes involved in an FBI investigation into ritualistic murders on the reservation. Kari Skogland directs from a screenplay by Patrick Massett and John Zinman.
Taylor Sheridan’s importance is foundational: he wrote and directed the 2017 original, but he is not listed as the sequel’s writer or director. Likewise, Renner and Olsen have not been confirmed for the new film, so the safest expectation is a continuation of the world and story rather than a confirmed reunion of the original leads.
