How the puzzle is structured
NYT Connections presents sixteen words that must be divided into four groups of four. The groups are commonly associated with four difficulty colors: yellow is usually the most approachable, followed by green, blue, and purple. A word can appear to fit more than one theme, so the intended solution depends on finding four exact words that work together while leaving a clean set for the remaining categories.
Spoiler: the complete answers
Yellow — LAB EQUIPMENT
BEAKER, DROPPER, GOGGLES, MICROSCOPE
These are all recognizable pieces of equipment used in laboratory work or science-class experiments. A beaker holds or mixes liquids, a dropper transfers small amounts of liquid, goggles protect the eyes, and a microscope magnifies specimens.
Green — NEXUS
CENTER, HEART, HUB, NUCLEUS
Each word can describe a central point, core, focal place, or location where activity and connections converge. The “heart” or “nucleus” of something is its essential center, while a “hub” and a “center” can be places where routes, people, or activity come together.
Blue — SPREADSHEET TERMS
CELL, FORMULA, SHEET, SORT
These are familiar spreadsheet concepts and operations, particularly in Microsoft Excel, although they also apply to spreadsheet software more broadly. A cell is an individual grid unit, a formula performs a calculation, a sheet is a worksheet, and sort describes rearranging data according to selected criteria.
Rank #3
Purple — ___ LANGUAGE
BODY, LOVE, ROMANCE, SIGN
Each word can precede “language”: body language, love language, Romance language, and sign language. This is the puzzle’s wordplay-based group rather than a set of words with one obvious shared meaning. “Romance language” refers to a language descended from Latin, such as Spanish, French, Italian, or Portuguese.
Why this Connections grid is tricky
The most tempting false grouping involves BODY, HEART, LOVE, and ROMANCE. Those words can suggest emotions, relationships, or anatomy, but the intended connection is the phrase completion “language.” Once BODY is recognized as part of that group, the remaining words make the spreadsheet category easier to see: CELL, FORMULA, SHEET, and SORT.
Rank #4
The purple group is especially dependent on recognizing a shared phrase rather than a shared definition. “Body language,” “love language,” and “sign language” are familiar expressions, while “Romance language” uses “Romance” as a linguistic classification. That unusual construction is the key to separating ROMANCE from the emotional-looking words.
