Parents described a far smaller and sparser event than the one it had been promoted as, some children were reported in tears, and the organiser later promised refunds. The account below is based on reporting published in February and March 2024; it covers what was advertised, what attendees said they found, and what the organiser, venue and police said afterwards.
What happened on 24 February 2024
Families arrived at the Box Hub warehouse in Whiteinch expecting an immersive chocolate fantasy. Attendees reported a sparsely decorated space with scattered props and a limited programme, and several said their visits were very short. Reports from the day included children crying and parents demanding refunds. The event was organised by House of Illuminati, which had sold tickets at a reported maximum of £35, according to The Guardian’s 2024 coverage. That figure is the historical price charged for the event, not a current offer.
What was promised and what visitors described
The event’s website advertised giant sweets, vibrant blooms, mysterious sculptures and magical surprises, alongside performances, a “twilight tunnel” and an “imagination lab”. Contemporary reports also described promised chocolate fountains and special effects. The table compares those promises with the accounts published afterwards.
| Element | What was promoted | What attendees reported |
|---|---|---|
| Sweets | Giant sweets | One father described a candy station handing out one jelly bean per child |
| Décor and scenery | Vibrant blooms and mysterious sculptures | A sparsely decorated warehouse with scattered props |
| Attractions | Performances, a twilight tunnel and an imagination lab | Limited activities; visits described as very short |
| Chocolate fountains and effects | Described in contemporary reports as promised | Not addressed in the published accounts reviewed |
| Ticket price | Up to £35 (The Guardian, 2024) | Not applicable |
These are individual accounts, not a complete inventory of the event. Attendees did not necessarily have identical experiences, and the reporting does not establish how many people shared each complaint.

Why parents and children reacted as they did
Coverage points to several specific sources of distress rather than a single grievance:
- A frightening costumed character. Some attendees described a character with a chrome mask whose appearance frightened younger children.
- A thin sweets offer. For families who had been promised giant sweets and a chocolate theme, a single jelly bean per child at the candy station was the most-cited symbol of the gap between promise and delivery.
- Little to do. Limited activities and short visits left families who had paid for a full experience with little to occupy them.
How the event ended and what police said
The organiser halted the event a few hours after it began, following complaints and demands for refunds. Police Scotland said officers were called to the venue and gave advice. A Police Scotland spokesperson, quoted by ITV News, said: “Police Scotland said officers were called and ‘advice was given’, but the situation was not a police matter.”
That wording matters. The reporting describes police attendance and advice only. It does not describe an arrest, a criminal investigation or a finding of fraud, and none should be inferred from the event’s collapse.
What the organiser and venue said
House of Illuminati apologised. Its statement, quoted by ITV News, read: “Today has been a very stressful and frustrating day for many and for that we are truly sorry.” The company attributed the failure to late supplier problems and technical issues. Billy Coull, a House of Illuminati director, told STV News: “I’m really shocked that the event had fallen short of the expectations of people on paper.” These explanations are the organiser’s own account; the reporting does not independently establish their cause.

Box Hub said the organiser was responsible for the event’s marketing, décor and operations, and that it had supplied only the venue space. Matt Waterfield, Box Hub operations manager, told ITV News: “We simply provided the venue space.” The venue’s position is therefore a separation of responsibility, not a finding about who was at fault for the event as advertised.
Refunds: what was promised and what is verified
House of Illuminati promised full refunds and initially said processing could take up to ten working days. STV News later reported a commitment to refund 850 transactions. That is a refund commitment as reported by STV in 2024, not an independently audited count of completed payments. Published reporting does not confirm how many refunds were ultimately paid, so readers who bought tickets should treat the promise as the documented position and check directly with the organiser or their payment provider.

The Wonka theme and licensing
The event drew on Willy Wonka, the character from Roald Dahl’s 1964 novel Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. The Guardian’s coverage identified Dahl’s book as the source of the wider story. The reporting describes the event as inspired by Wonka and does not establish that it was an officially licensed attraction. It should not be described as an official Warner Bros. or Roald Dahl event.

The main lesson from this case is the gap between how a family event is marketed and what is delivered on the day. Before buying tickets for a themed experience, check whether the organiser names a specific venue, lists exactly what is included, and states a refund policy in writing. Keep the booking confirmation and any promotional pages you relied on, since those are the documents that define what was offered.
