How this ranking works
The list uses ComicBook.com’s September 20, 2025 ranking as its starting point, rather than presenting its order as a consensus. The entries are assessed by how much story Wolverine receives, how coherent and distinctive his characterization is, how effectively the work uses his comic history, and whether it offers a substantial story or only a brief appearance. That means a good cameo can rank below a less polished work that gives Logan more to do.
The order below follows that outlet’s ranking. It separates a few connected formats where useful for readers, but does not claim that each individual episode or cameo is inventoried.

The strongest overall screen portrayal in this ranking. Wolverine and the X-Men
This series makes Logan responsible for helping reunite the X-Men after a disaster and Professor X’s disappearance. That premise puts his leadership, past and relationships at the center instead of limiting him to the team’s blunt instrument. Lionsgate and Marvel announced the show in 2008 as 26 half-hour episodes, with Nicktoons scheduled to air it in January 2009; those are historical launch details, not a statement about present-day availability. The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes
Wolverine’s appearances connect two different phases of his life: his World War II-era work with the Howling Commandos and his later association with the Avengers. That historical contrast makes this a particularly rewarding crossover for viewers interested in Logan’s wider Marvel context, even though he is not the lead.

X-Men: Evolution
Here, Wolverine is the seasoned adult among a younger X-Men team. That setup draws on his experience and gives him a different place in the group than versions centered on a more evenly matched team of adults. It also changes familiar relationships, a trade-off that comes with making the younger cast the story’s focus.

Hulk Vs. Wolverine
This animated feature earns its place through the direct clash between Wolverine and the Hulk, with Weapon X history adding context to the action. It is a strong choice when you want a compact confrontation rather than a long team-series arc.

Ultimate Spider-Man
The standout is the body-swap story that puts Peter Parker and Wolverine in each other’s bodies. It uses Logan’s temperament for comedy while giving the crossover a clear hook. The ranked source also describes the series as sharing continuity with Hulk and the Agents of S.M.A.S.H.

Marvel Anime
This entry groups four series—X-Men, Iron Man, Wolverine and Blade—rather than treating each as a separate ranked slot. The solo Wolverine series is the most directly focused on Logan, with Japan central to its story and a visual style distinct from the American team cartoons. Wolverine appears alongside other X-Men as they support T’Challa and Storm. The crossover is notable for bringing him into a story centered elsewhere, but his limited role keeps it below the more substantial portrayals.

A brief appearance gets a memorable beat from Wolverine’s confrontation with Sabretooth. It is a good example of a guest spot that has a specific payoff without offering much character development.

Wolverine runs into the Hulk team during a Canadian vacation, and the story leans into his irritable, temperamental side. The encounter suits a crossover episode, though it is not a deep exploration of Logan.

The Avengers recruit Wolverine in a story involving the missing Red Guardian and the Collector. His presence adds to the team-up, but the plot does not make him its central figure.

Pryde of the X-Men
This pilot is remembered for its fight sequences and for a Wolverine whose accent sounds notably different from familiar later versions. It is an interesting early animated interpretation, more valuable as a snapshot of the character’s screen history than as a definitive Logan story.

LEGO Marvel Super Heroes: Maximum Overload
Wolverine helps the Avengers fight villains, but he is not a major focus. It works as a short, playful team appearance rather than a meaningful adaptation of his character.

The Super Hero Squad Show
This kid-oriented, chibi-style version makes Wolverine friendlier than his usual portrayals. The contrast is the point: it offers a deliberately softened take rather than the gruff, battle-worn Logan found in the higher-ranked entries. The show was based on Hasbro’s Marvel Super Hero Squad action-figure line.
Which Wolverine cartoon should you watch first?
- For the best overall adaptation: Start with X-Men: The Animated Series, then watch X-Men ’97 for the continuation.
- For Logan as a leader: Choose Wolverine and the X-Men, where the premise gives him responsibility for the team’s future.
- For a younger-team dynamic: Try X-Men: Evolution, which places an experienced Wolverine among younger heroes.
- For a focused action story: Watch Hulk Vs. Wolverine.
- For a different visual style and a solo lead: Look to the Marvel Anime grouping, especially its Wolverine series.
Why “every appearance” needs a clear scope
A list of ranked portrayals is not the same as a complete credits chronology. A 2024 creator compilation names additional works and formats, including Spider-Man: The Animated Series, Robot Chicken, Marvel Super Heroes 4D, MAD, LEGO shorts and Marvel Knights motion comics, among others. Because that compilation is not a primary episode-credit database, it is useful as evidence that the screen history is broader—not as proof of a definitive, exhaustive list. For the same reason, this ranking does not declare which work contains Wolverine’s first animated appearance: the available sources do not establish that claim conclusively.
