A YouTube black screen does not have one universal cause. If the controls or audio still work, start with browser rendering, extensions, graphics acceleration, or protected-content settings. If the entire page is black, investigate the app, browser, cache, network, or a temporary service problem. On a TV, include the app, device firmware, HDMI cable, and display connection in the diagnosis.
The fastest approach is to determine whether the problem affects one video or every video, one device or several, and whether audio continues while the picture is missing. Then apply the least disruptive fix for that branch.
First, identify which kind of black screen you have
Before changing settings, open two or three unrelated YouTube videos, preferably from different channels. Note whether the page is visible, whether the playback controls appear, and whether audio continues.
| What you see | Most useful interpretation | First test |
|---|---|---|
| The page and controls are visible, but the video area is black | This points more toward a browser-rendering, graphics-acceleration, extension, protected-content, codec, or video-specific problem than a complete loss of internet access. It is a troubleshooting inference, not a confirmed diagnosis. | Try another video, then open YouTube in a private or incognito window. |
| Audio continues but the picture is black | The page may be loading while the video frames are failing to render or reach the display. Hardware acceleration, graphics drivers, protected content, and an external display path become more important suspects. | Turn off hardware acceleration in the desktop browser and test again; on a TV, test another input or device. |
| The entire YouTube page is black, frozen, or will not load | Prioritize a stuck app or browser, corrupted site data, outdated software, DNS or network filtering, or a temporary YouTube-side problem. | Refresh, fully restart the app or browser, and test another website or connection. |
| Only one video is black | The problem may be limited to that video, its format, age or region availability, or a temporary content-delivery failure. | Play another video and try a different resolution. |
| YouTube is black only on a TV or external streaming device | The fault may be in the TV app, device software, HDMI connection, receiver or switch, or compatibility between the device and television. | Restart and power-cycle the device, then test another app and HDMI input. |
If the same videos fail on several devices and networks, stop repeatedly reinstalling the app. That pattern is more consistent with a network-wide restriction or a YouTube-side incident than with one damaged browser cache.

Try these fixes in order
1. Refresh YouTube and restart the device
Refresh the watch page first. If that does not help, close and reopen YouTube. On a computer, fully quit the browser rather than closing only the YouTube tab. Some browsers continue running background processes after a window closes; if necessary, use the operating system’s task manager or force-quit interface to end the browser process, then open it again.
Restart the phone, tablet, TV, computer, or streaming device. For a TV or streaming device, perform a power cycle: unplug it from power, wait at least 30 seconds, reconnect it, and try YouTube again. YouTube specifically recommends restarting and power-cycling devices as early playback troubleshooting steps; its official guidance is available in YouTube’s playback troubleshooting instructions.
2. Check the connection and temporarily lower video quality
Play a video at a lower resolution using the player’s settings menu. This is both a workaround and a diagnostic test. If 360p or 480p works while 1080p or 4K remains black or repeatedly buffers, the connection, router, or available bandwidth may be involved.
YouTube lists these approximate sustained connection speeds for different qualities:
| Quality | Approximate sustained speed |
|---|---|
| 360p | 0.7 Mbps |
| 480p | 1.1 Mbps |
| 720p | 2.5 Mbps |
| 1080p | 5 Mbps |
| 4K | 20 Mbps |
These are approximate requirements, not a guarantee that a connection will play smoothly. Several people or devices sharing the same connection can reduce the bandwidth available to YouTube. Restart the router, move closer to the Wi-Fi access point, or temporarily switch between Wi-Fi, wired internet, and mobile data.
If YouTube works on mobile data but not on home Wi-Fi, investigate the network rather than the phone. Check for router-level filtering, parental controls, a VPN, security software, custom DNS, or a mobile-provider and school/work network restriction. YouTube advises confirming that the preferred DNS servers are being used and that third-party applications have not modified DNS settings. Do not change DNS blindly; first test whether another network resolves the problem.
3. Update YouTube, the browser, and device software
Install available updates for the YouTube app and the phone or tablet operating system. On a TV or streaming device, check both the app store and the device’s firmware or system-update settings.
On a computer, update the browser to the latest version available for the operating system. YouTube’s current system guidance calls for a compatible browser such as Chrome, Firefox, or Safari, a current operating system, and a reliable internet connection; see YouTube’s supported browser and system guidance.

An older TV or streaming device may no longer support the current YouTube app properly. If the device reports that YouTube is unavailable, use the official app or youtube.com in a supported browser where possible, update the app and Google Play components where applicable, or test YouTube on another supported device. YouTube’s guidance for unavailable content and devices is documented in its device-compatibility help page.

Browser fixes for a black YouTube video
4. Test a private or incognito window
Open YouTube in a private window. This usually starts with a cleaner session and prevents many extensions from running normally.
- If the video works privately, an extension, stored site data, or a browser profile setting is likely involved.
- If it remains black privately, continue with the browser, graphics, network, and protected-content checks below.
In the normal browser window, temporarily disable extensions—especially ad blockers, privacy tools, script blockers, VPN extensions, video downloaders, and custom media-control tools. YouTube explicitly recommends testing with extensions disabled and notes that ad blockers can affect playback. That does not mean every black screen is caused by ad blocking; extension testing is simply a reversible way to isolate a conflict.
Re-enable extensions one at a time and reload YouTube after each change. When the black screen returns, you have identified the likely conflict. Look for an update or setting within that extension before deciding whether to remove it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems5. Clear YouTube’s cache and cookies
Stale or corrupted site data can cause loading, formatting, and playback problems. If the browser offers a site-specific option, clear YouTube’s stored data first. If the problem continues, clear the browser’s cached images and files and its YouTube cookies, then restart the browser.
Clearing cookies may sign you out and can remove saved site preferences. Google explains the trade-off and the general procedure in its cache and cookies troubleshooting guidance. Sign in again if prompted, then test YouTube before restoring extensions or changing additional settings.
6. Turn off hardware acceleration in Chrome
This is one of the most useful tests when the controls or audio work but video frames are black, the problem affects only one desktop browser, or other websites show flickering, black frames, or visual corruption.
In Chrome for desktop, open:
Settings → System → Use hardware acceleration when available
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Turn the setting off, select the option to relaunch Chrome if shown, and test YouTube again. Google’s Chrome troubleshooting guidance recommends this supported toggle when hardware acceleration is causing problems; see Chrome’s hardware-acceleration help.
If disabling it fixes the problem, do not assume the setting itself is permanently defective. Update Chrome and the graphics driver first. Hardware acceleration can improve video performance on a properly configured system, so leaving it disabled is a workaround with a possible performance cost, not a universal recommendation.

7. Check protected-content permissions
This step matters most when ordinary YouTube videos play but films, television episodes, live events, or other protected media show a black player. Browsers use protected-content components for some playback, and blocking them can prevent media from playing or reduce playback quality.
In Chrome, check:
Privacy and security → Site settings → Additional content settings → Protected content IDs
Make sure protected content has not been blocked. Chrome says protected content is allowed by default, but a changed setting or blocked protected-content identifiers can interfere with playback. Its explanation is available in Chrome’s protected-content documentation.
Do not install unofficial codecs, disable unrelated security protections, or change experimental browser flags as a first response. Community advice about graphics backends and experimental flags can become obsolete after browser updates and may create new problems.
Fixes for Android phones and tablets
- Force-close YouTube, reopen it, and restart the device.
- Update YouTube through the app store and install available Android updates.
- Clear the app cache: the exact labels vary by manufacturer, but the usual path is Settings → Apps → YouTube → Storage & cache → Clear cache.
- Test another connection, such as mobile data instead of Wi-Fi, while keeping the same video and account.
- Reinstall YouTube if the problem continues after restarting and updating.
Android distinguishes between clearing temporary cache and clearing app storage. Clear cache first. Clearing storage or app data is a later escalation because it can reset the app’s local state and may require you to sign in or restore preferences. Android explains the distinction in its official cache and storage guidance.
If YouTube works in a mobile browser but not in the app, the app installation, app data, or device compatibility is more suspect. If both fail only on one Wi-Fi network, investigate that network instead.
Fixes for iPhone and iPad
- Close and reopen YouTube.
- Restart the iPhone or iPad.
- Update YouTube from the App Store and install available iOS or iPadOS updates.
- Test YouTube on another Wi-Fi network or on mobile data, where available.
- Delete and reinstall YouTube if restarting and updating did not help.
Reinstalling is a reasonable escalation for iOS and iPadOS because it replaces the app installation and its local state. It is not a solution for a YouTube-wide outage or a network restriction that affects every device.
Fixes for smart TVs and streaming devices
8. Restart the app, power-cycle the device, and test another app
Close and reopen the YouTube app. Then unplug the TV or streaming device for at least 30 seconds, reconnect it, and try again. Install available YouTube app and firmware updates.
Open another streaming app on the same TV or input. The result helps separate the causes:

- Other apps also show a black picture: investigate the TV, input, display mode, receiver, cable, or device hardware.
- Other apps work but YouTube is black: focus on the YouTube app, account, app data, software version, or YouTube service.
- The TV’s built-in YouTube works but an external stick, console, or set-top box is black: focus on the external device and HDMI display path.
YouTube’s supported-device information covers major smart-TV platforms, game consoles, Chromecast, Google TV, Roku, Fire TV, and other streaming devices, but support can vary by model and region. Use YouTube’s official playback troubleshooting page as the starting point for device-specific guidance.
9. Check the HDMI display chain—but only when the symptom points there
If YouTube works on the TV’s built-in app but is black through an external device, work through the connection:
- Reseat the HDMI cable at both ends.
- Try a different HDMI input on the TV.
- Temporarily bypass an HDMI switch, soundbar, receiver, or capture device.
- Restart both the external device and the TV.
- Test another known-good HDMI cable if the problem remains isolated to that setup.
A replacement HDMI cable is relevant only to this external-device-to-TV display-chain test. It will not repair a black browser video, a phone app cache, a DNS problem, or a YouTube-wide outage. Do not buy a cable simply because YouTube is black when the TV displays other inputs normally and the same video fails elsewhere.
If the TV reports No signal, the problem is no longer just a YouTube playback problem. Check the selected input, device power, HDMI connection, and TV hardware.
10. Consider a supported external device for an obsolete TV app
If the TV’s built-in YouTube app is no longer supported, cannot be updated, or remains broken after compatibility and firmware checks, a supported streaming device can be a practical alternative. Check the television’s HDMI ports, supported resolution, power requirements, and the device’s current YouTube compatibility before purchasing.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
This is a compatibility workaround, not a general black-screen fix. Update, restart, power-cycle, and test the existing setup first. A new streaming device will not resolve a network filter, account restriction, faulty TV display, or YouTube service incident.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When graphics drivers are the likely issue
If YouTube and other video sites show black frames, flicker, crashes, colored blocks, or system-wide visual corruption, update the graphics driver through one of these safer sources:
- Windows or the operating system’s built-in update mechanism;
- the computer manufacturer’s support page; or
- the graphics-card manufacturer’s official driver page.
If the problem began immediately after a graphics-driver update, rolling back that update may be more appropriate than installing another driver package. Avoid generic driver websites, unofficial codecs, and software that asks you to disable security protections.
Driver troubleshooting becomes more urgent if the computer freezes, crashes, overheats, or shows corruption outside YouTube. In that situation, YouTube is probably exposing a broader graphics or hardware problem rather than causing it.
Check account restrictions and content availability
Sign in if playback or available videos behave differently while signed out. Also check whether Restricted Mode, a supervised account, parental controls, or a school, workplace, or internet-provider filter is active.
Restricted Mode can be applied at the browser or device level, and administrators or network providers may impose restrictions. YouTube documents the feature in its Restricted Mode help page.

A restriction or regional limitation usually produces an availability message rather than a completely black player, but the distinction is not always obvious when an app fails badly. Compare the same video while signed out, in a private browser window, on another network, and on another device. Do not bypass an administrator’s or family account’s controls without permission.
Could YouTube itself be down?
Yes, but do not conclude that from one black screen on one device. A broader incident becomes more plausible when unrelated videos fail on several devices and networks, or when other viewers are reporting the same playback problem at the same time.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Before factory-resetting a TV, replacing a graphics card, or buying a streaming device, check YouTube’s official help and current service communications, then compare reports from multiple users. Third-party outage trackers can provide a useful signal, but they do not prove the cause or scope of an outage.
If YouTube works on another device and network, the fault is more likely local. If it fails everywhere, wait and retest after confirming that the issue is not an account or network restriction.
When to escalate the problem
Contact YouTube Help, the browser developer, or the device manufacturer after you have:
- tested multiple videos;
- tried another browser, app, device, or network;
- restarted and updated the affected software;
- cleared the relevant browser or app data;
- tested extensions and hardware acceleration where applicable; and
- checked compatibility and the HDMI path for a TV setup.
Seek hardware support sooner if the display is black outside YouTube, the television reports no signal, the computer has system-wide graphical corruption, or the device crashes or overheats. Those symptoms require display, GPU, power, or hardware diagnosis beyond YouTube.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why is YouTube black but I can still hear the audio?
That symptom suggests that the page and audio are loading while video frames are failing to render or reach the display. Test a private browser window, disable extensions, turn off desktop-browser hardware acceleration, update the graphics driver, and check protected-content settings if only protected media is affected. It is a diagnostic pattern, not proof of one specific cause.
Why is only one YouTube video showing a black screen?
Play unrelated videos from other channels and try a different resolution. If those work, the problem may be limited to the original video, its format, age or region availability, or a temporary content-delivery issue.
Should I replace my HDMI cable when YouTube is black?
Only if the black picture occurs through a particular external streaming device, console, receiver, or set-top box. Reseat the cable, try another HDMI input, bypass intermediary equipment, and test another known-good cable first. An HDMI cable will not fix a black browser player, phone app, cache, DNS, or YouTube-wide problem.
What should I do if YouTube is black on every device?
Test another network, such as mobile data, and check for network filtering or a broader YouTube incident. If unrelated videos fail across several devices and networks, a service-side problem is more plausible. If the issue disappears on another network, investigate DNS, VPN, parental controls, or provider filtering.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Start by testing several videos and separating audio-and-controls playback from a completely failed page. Restart and update first, then test the network, extensions, cache, hardware acceleration, protected-content settings, and—on TVs—firmware and the HDMI display chain. Replace hardware only when the evidence isolates the fault to that hardware.
