Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Yes—the free ad-supported Crunchyroll on-demand tier ended on December 31, 2025. As of January 1, 2026, watching episodes from Crunchyroll’s regular on-demand catalog generally requires a paid Premium membership. However, Crunchyroll has not become completely inaccessible without payment: its free Crunchyroll Channel, selected anime on other ad-supported services, official YouTube programming, and a limited Premium trial can still provide legal ways to watch anime at no cost.
The important distinction is that none of these options restores the old free, choose-any-episode Crunchyroll catalog. Free viewers now have to accept rotating lineups, linear channels, regional restrictions, advertisements, or limited trial periods.
The old free Crunchyroll catalog is gone
Crunchyroll’s former free ad-supported on-demand tier ended on December 31, 2025. The practical change took effect on January 1, 2026: a viewer can no longer rely on a free Crunchyroll account to watch the regular on-demand library with advertising.
A free Crunchyroll account still exists for browsing, managing an account, and other basic account functions. That does not mean the account includes free access to the full anime catalog. Crunchyroll’s current membership information describes a standard seven-day Premium trial for eligible users, while an account can return to a “Free” status after a paid plan ends. “Free account” and “free on-demand viewing” are now separate things.

There are also some exceptions and promotional forms of access. The most important is the Crunchyroll Channel, a separate free, ad-supported streaming channel available on select platforms.
Crunchyroll Channel: free, but not the old free plan
The Crunchyroll Channel is a legal, no-cost anime channel that runs continuously on supported platforms. It is designed more as a sampler for newcomers than as a replacement for Crunchyroll’s former on-demand tier.
Crunchyroll currently lists the channel on select LG Smart TVs, Vizio Smart TVs, Roku devices, and Amazon’s free ad-supported streaming environment, which includes the programming formerly associated with Freevee. Availability can vary by country, device, and platform version.
The channel’s programming is linear. You watch whatever is currently airing rather than choosing any episode from the full Crunchyroll library. The lineup also changes. Examples Crunchyroll has listed include Horimiya, Ranking of Kings, Moriarty the Patriot, PSYCHO-PASS, Arifureta, Sugar Apple Fairy Tale, To Your Eternity, and Code Geass, but a named series should not be assumed to remain available indefinitely.
What the Crunchyroll Channel can do: provide free, ad-supported anime programming without requiring a Crunchyroll subscription.
What it cannot do: give you the full Premium library, let you freely select every episode, guarantee that a particular show is airing, or necessarily let you start a series from episode one.
Where to watch anime free legally
1. Check the Crunchyroll Channel
This is the closest official alternative to the discontinued free Crunchyroll experience, but it works like a television channel rather than a video library. It is most useful when you want something to watch casually and do not mind a scheduled lineup.
Open the supported streaming platform on your smart TV or streaming device and search for “Crunchyroll Channel.” If it does not appear, the channel may not be available in your region or on that particular device. Do not assume that installing the regular Crunchyroll app will unlock the former free catalog.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware match2. Search Tubi’s free anime catalog
Tubi remains a legitimate ad-supported option for selected anime. Its documented licensing partnerships have included VIZ Media, Toei Animation, Sentai Filmworks, and Shout! Factory. Titles associated with those announcements have included Naruto, Death Note, Sailor Moon, One Piece specials, Dr. Slump, Slam Dunk, Clannad, Millennium Actress, Liz and the Blue Bird, and Penguin Highway.
Those examples are not a permanent catalog guarantee. Streaming rights change by title, territory, and date, so search Tubi directly for the specific anime you want. A title being available in one country does not establish that it is available in another.
Good use case: viewers who want selectable, ad-supported episodes or films and are willing to check several services instead of expecting one complete catalog.
3. Check other free ad-supported television services
Anime channels and selected licensed programs may also appear on Pluto TV, The Roku Channel, Sling TV, and similar free or ad-supported platforms. These services can carry rotating channels or limited collections rather than a complete series library.
Search each service for the title, distributor, or genre instead of assuming that a platform has every show associated with a particular anime brand. Free availability is especially likely to be limited by region and may disappear when a license expires.
4. Look for official anime YouTube channels
Anime distributors, publishers, and rights holders sometimes put selected episodes, premieres, clips, films, or promotional programming on official YouTube channels. This can be a useful free option, but availability varies significantly by country and licensing window.
For the safest results, search for the anime together with the name of its official distributor or rights holder. Prefer a verified or clearly official channel. Do not treat an unauthorized upload, mirror, or “free streaming” site as an equivalent legal alternative.
When Crunchyroll’s seven-day trial makes sense
Crunchyroll’s standard Premium trial is currently seven days for eligible users. It provides Premium access during the trial, including ad-free playback and access to the Premium library. A valid payment method is required, and eligibility is generally limited to people who have not already used the offer.
Recommended Free Tools
A trial can make sense if you want to finish a specific show, test the service before subscribing, or watch a release that is not available on the free services. It is not a permanent free plan.

Crunchyroll also documents a narrow Delta SkyMiles promotion that can provide up to 24 hours of Mega Fan access during eligible U.S.-origin Delta flights using Delta Sync Wi-Fi. That is a travel-specific promotion, not a general replacement for the discontinued free tier.
Which paid Crunchyroll plan is cheapest?
For U.S. readers, the prices below reflect Crunchyroll’s announced prices researched on August 12, 2026. Prices, promotions, taxes, billing channels, and plan benefits can change, so verify the amount at checkout. A subscription purchased through a platform such as Amazon Prime Video Channels or The Roku Channel may be managed and priced by that platform rather than directly by Crunchyroll.
| Plan | U.S. price | Best for | Main benefits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fan | $9.99/month | One regular viewer | Ad-free viewing, the full library, new episodes shortly after Japanese release, one simultaneous stream, and offline viewing |
| Mega Fan | $13.99/month | Households or viewers who download anime | Up to four simultaneous streams, HD offline viewing, Game Vault access, and additional store benefits |
| Ultimate Fan | $17.99/month | Heavy U.S. users who want the extra perks | Up to six simultaneous streams plus additional U.S.-specific benefits such as Crunchyroll Manga and merchandise-related perks |
Crunchyroll has also announced a limited Fan annual offer of $66.99 for one year, equivalent to about $5.58 per month when paid annually. That offer may not be available to every customer or at every checkout, and it requires paying upfront. If it is offered to you, compare the total annual cost with the current monthly price before purchasing.

- Occasional viewer: use the Crunchyroll Channel, Tubi, other FAST services, and official YouTube channels first. Take the seven-day trial only when a particular show requires Premium access.
- One regular viewer: Fan is the lowest standard U.S. paid tier and is usually the straightforward choice.
- Several people watching at once: Mega Fan’s allowance of up to four simultaneous streams is more relevant than Fan’s single stream.
- Frequent traveler or downloader: compare Mega Fan if HD offline viewing matters.
- Viewer focused on U.S.-specific extras: Ultimate Fan may be worth considering only if its additional benefits justify the higher price.
Watching the free options on a television
If your television already supports Roku, Amazon’s free streaming environment, or the relevant smart-TV app store, you may not need extra hardware. Search for the Crunchyroll Channel, Tubi, Pluto TV, The Roku Channel, or another service directly on the television.
Need a streaming device?
If your older TV lacks compatible apps, an Amazon Fire TV Stick HD can provide access to supported streaming apps and free ad-supported channels. A Roku Streaming Stick Plus is another option; Roku describes the current model as supporting 4K and HDR.
Important: buying a streaming stick does not make Crunchyroll Premium free and does not unlock paid episodes. It only gives a compatible television a way to run streaming apps and access free channels that are available in your region. Check the device’s current specifications, platform support, and price before buying.
Amazon consolidated Freevee’s free content and FAST channels into Prime Video in early 2025. Those free, ad-supported offerings remain available without requiring a Prime subscription, although the exact interface and catalog can change. Likewise, device compatibility does not guarantee access to every anime service or every title.

What is the most economical legal strategy?
There is no single free service that reliably replaces Crunchyroll’s former on-demand catalog. The least expensive approach depends on how much control and continuity you need.
If you watch only occasionally
Start with the Crunchyroll Channel and search Tubi, other FAST services, and official YouTube channels. If the show you want is Premium-only, use the seven-day trial when eligible and cancel before renewal if you do not want to continue.
If you follow seasonal anime
A Premium subscription is more practical because new episodes, simulcasts, and full-season access are difficult to obtain consistently from rotating free catalogs. Fan is the lowest standard U.S. tier for a single viewer.
If you share an account within your household
Compare the simultaneous-stream limits rather than choosing solely by monthly price. Mega Fan supports up to four simultaneous streams, while Ultimate Fan supports up to six, subject to Crunchyroll’s current terms. Do not assume that a higher plan automatically makes every regional benefit available everywhere.
What changed—and what did not
- Changed: the former free, ad-supported on-demand Crunchyroll tier ended after December 31, 2025.
- Changed: regular on-demand access now generally requires Premium.
- Still available: a free Crunchyroll account for basic account functions and browsing.
- Still available: the separate, linear Crunchyroll Channel on select platforms.
- Still available: selected anime on Tubi, other ad-supported services, and official YouTube channels.
- Still available: a seven-day Premium trial for eligible users who provide a payment method.
- Not available: a legal workaround that restores unrestricted access to Crunchyroll’s former free on-demand library.
Avoid unofficial streaming mirrors, unauthorized downloads, and tools advertised as ways to bypass Crunchyroll’s licensing or subscription controls. Apart from the legal and security risks, these sources can disappear without notice and often provide misleading or unsafe downloads.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I still watch Crunchyroll for free?
Yes, but not through the former full free on-demand tier. The Crunchyroll Channel offers free linear programming on select platforms, and eligible users may receive a seven-day Premium trial. Selected anime may also be available free on Tubi, other ad-supported services, or official YouTube channels.
When did Crunchyroll’s free plan end?
The free ad-supported on-demand tier ended on December 31, 2025. The practical effect began January 1, 2026.
Is the Crunchyroll Channel the same as the old free plan?
No. The Crunchyroll Channel is a scheduled, ad-supported channel with a changing lineup. It does not provide the full Premium library or unrestricted episode-by-episode selection.

One-click scans. No signup required.
Does Crunchyroll’s free trial require a credit card?
Crunchyroll’s standard seven-day Premium trial requires a valid payment method. It is generally limited to eligible users who have not already used the offer, and you must cancel before the trial ends if you do not want paid renewal.
What is the cheapest paid Crunchyroll plan in the United States?
Fan is the lowest standard U.S. monthly tier at the researched price of $9.99 per month. Crunchyroll has also announced a limited $66.99 annual Fan offer, but availability and terms should be checked at checkout.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Crunchyroll’s free on-demand tier is gone, but legal free anime has not disappeared. Use the Crunchyroll Channel for scheduled programming, search Tubi and other FAST services for rotating catalogs, and check official YouTube channels for licensed uploads. If you need the full Crunchyroll library, simulcasts, ad-free playback, or downloads, the seven-day trial or the U.S. Fan plan is the practical next step.
