The Bear’s Family Tree Explained: All 11 Berzatto Family Members

The Bear’s 11-person family grouping includes blood relatives, in-laws, partners, honorary relatives, and longtime associates. Here is who is actually related—and who is family by choice.

The short answer: the Berzatto family’s confirmed bloodline is Donna and Pop Berzatto’s three children—Mikey, Natalie, and Carmy—along with their cousin Michelle. The other people in the commonly cited group of 11 are connected through marriage, partnership, friendship, or long-standing family loyalty. Richie is not a biological cousin, and Jimmy is not a literal uncle.

This guide contains spoilers through Season 5, including the family-centered episodes Fishes, Ice Chips, and Bears. If you need to catch up first, you can watch The Bear on Hulu before reading.

The Berzatto family tree at a glance

The Bear deliberately makes its family tree feel larger and messier than a conventional genealogy. The restaurant’s regulars use terms such as “Cousin” and “Uncle” to describe closeness, history, and obligation—not necessarily shared DNA.

That produces the editorial grouping of 11 people: Donna, Mikey, Natalie, Carmy, Pop, Michelle, Stevie, Pete, Richie, Jimmy, and Lee. It is not a definitive count of every person connected to the Berzattos.

Who are the 11 people in the Berzatto family circle?

1. Donna Berzatto: the mother and emotional center

Donna is the mother of Mikey, Natalie, and Carmy. She is the central adult figure in the family’s history, but not a stable one. Her apparent alcohol misuse, volatile behavior, and mental-health struggles create the environment in which the siblings learn to anticipate conflict, manage her moods, and protect one another.

Fishes, the Season 2 Christmas flashback, places Donna at the center of the family’s most famous explosion. The episode shows how quickly affection, resentment, addiction, old grievances, and fear can turn a family gathering into a crisis. Donna is not simply an antagonist; she is also a damaged parent whose behavior becomes part of the trauma inherited by her children.

In Ice Chips, Donna attempts to reconnect with Natalie around the birth of Natalie’s child. That episode adds another layer to her role: she remains a source of pain, but she is also part of the family’s attempt to decide whether its patterns will continue into another generation.

2. Pop Berzatto: the absent father

Pop is the name the show uses for the Berzatto children’s father. His first name has not been confirmed, and his precise fate remains unresolved. The safest description is that he abandoned or disappeared from the family years before the main story rather than claiming that he is definitively dead.

Jimmy’s recollections establish that Pop drank, used drugs, gambled, struggled to maintain a career, and was connected to the origins of The Original Beef of Chicagoland. His absence still shapes the family. The children grow up with the consequences of his failures, while Jimmy becomes one of the adult men who helps fill the practical and financial vacuum Pop left behind.

Pop is included in the 11-person grouping because he is the father of the three Berzatto siblings, even though the series withholds much of his biography. Any family tree that gives him a first name or a confirmed death date goes beyond what the show establishes.

3. Michael “Mikey” Berzatto: the oldest sibling

Mikey is Donna and Pop’s eldest child and the older brother of Natalie and Carmy. Before the series begins, he operates The Original Beef of Chicagoland, the family sandwich shop that becomes the foundation of The Bear.

Mikey dies by suicide before the present-day story starts. His death is the event that brings Carmy back to Chicago and forces him to take responsibility for the restaurant Mikey left behind. It also explains why Mikey remains such a powerful presence even when he is absent from the current timeline.

The restaurant carries Mikey’s debts, unfinished decisions, friendships, and reputation. Richie’s loyalty to The Beef is largely loyalty to Mikey, while Carmy’s decision to rebuild it is inseparable from grief and guilt. Mikey’s legacy is therefore both emotional and practical: he is the person everyone is mourning, arguing about, and trying to live up to—or escape.

4. Natalie “Sugar” Berzatto: the middle sibling

Natalie, usually called Sugar, is Donna and Pop’s middle child and Carmy’s sister. She often becomes the family member who handles logistics when everyone else is overwhelmed. Her role in transforming The Beef into The Bear makes her the practical bridge between the restaurant’s past and its future.

Natalie is protective and solution-oriented, but those qualities are not the same as emotional invulnerability. She has spent years responding to crises created by other people. As the restaurant develops, she tries to establish boundaries and healthier systems instead of simply absorbing the next emergency.

By Season 5, Natalie is also a mother. Her daughter’s arrival makes the family’s old patterns more urgent: Natalie must decide how much access Donna should have to the next generation while continuing to manage the restaurant and her own relationship with Carmy.

5. Carmen “Carmy” Berzatto: the youngest sibling and protagonist

Carmy is Donna and Pop’s youngest child and the central character of The Bear. After training and working in elite kitchens, he returns to Chicago following Mikey’s death. His professional goal is to turn the family sandwich shop into a serious restaurant, but the project is also an attempt to process grief, repair his relationship with Natalie, and determine what parts of his family history he has carried into his own work.

Carmy’s cooking background gives him authority in the kitchen, but it does not give him emotional control. He can identify dysfunction in a restaurant while reproducing some of the same pressure and isolation that shaped him. His fear of becoming like Donna, his unresolved relationship with Mikey, and his need to make The Bear meaningful all overlap.

The nickname “Bear” comes from Berzatto and functions within the family as a term of affection. It also becomes the name of the restaurant that Carmy builds from Mikey’s inheritance, making the title itself part of the family story.

6. Michelle Berzatto: the actual blood cousin

Michelle is a genuine Berzatto cousin, not Carmy’s sister and not a nickname for another family member. The series does not fully diagram her branch of the family onscreen, but she is explicitly treated as a blood relative of Mikey, Natalie, and Carmy.

Michelle appears in Fishes as one of the more self-aware and comparatively calm members of the extended family. She recognizes how damaging the Berzatto household can be and does not seem interested in pretending that its chaos is normal.

Her importance to Carmy extends beyond the Christmas dinner. Michelle offers him a place to stay in New York when he is trying to establish himself as a chef. That offer represents a different kind of family loyalty: she cares about Carmy, but she also understands that sometimes helping someone means giving them distance from the household that is hurting them.

7. Stevie: Michelle’s partner

Stevie, played by John Mulaney, is Michelle’s partner. He is connected to the Berzatto family through Michelle rather than by blood or marriage to one of the core siblings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

During Fishes, Stevie is an outsider in the most useful sense. He can see the family’s intensity without being trapped inside its old rivalries. His grace before the meal provides a brief moment of perspective and stability in a gathering otherwise dominated by hostility and dread.

Stevie and Michelle later matter to Carmy because they offer him temporary refuge during his New York period. Their home becomes an example of family as a place where someone can be accepted without being required to remain inside the same destructive cycle.

8. Pete Katinsky: Natalie’s husband

Pete is Natalie’s husband and the father of their daughter. He is not a Berzatto by birth, but he is an immediate in-law and one of the most important people in the family’s present-day support system.

Pete’s kindness, organization, and comparatively direct communication style make him appear unusual around the Berzattos. He is not free from anxiety or difficult circumstances, but he generally approaches problems differently from the family members who rely on avoidance, anger, sarcasm, or self-sacrifice.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

His relationship with Natalie becomes especially important in Ice Chips, when pregnancy, childbirth, and Donna’s possible role in the next generation force the family to confront what healthy involvement might look like. Pete’s presence helps show that Natalie is building a household of her own rather than simply remaining inside the one she inherited.

9. Richard “Richie” Jerimovich: the honorary cousin

Richie is not biologically related to the Berzattos. He was Mikey’s best friend and grew up close enough to the family that Donna functioned as a second mother. The siblings call him “Cousin” because he belongs to the family socially and emotionally, not because he shares their surname or ancestry.

Richie helped Mikey run The Beef and initially treats the restaurant as part of his personal inheritance. When Carmy returns, Richie sees him not just as a new boss but as the younger relative who disappeared and came back with plans to change everything. Their arguments are therefore about more than menus, money, or kitchen authority.

Richie resents Carmy’s absence and his apparent rejection of Mikey’s way of doing things, yet he remains deeply loyal to the Berzattos. His arc repeatedly demonstrates that found family can be every bit as binding—and every bit as painful—as biological family.

10. James “Jimmy” “Cicero” Kalinowski: the honorary uncle and investor

Jimmy, commonly called Cicero, is a longtime friend of Pop and a paternal figure to the Berzatto children. The family calls him “Uncle,” but he is not presented as a biological relative.

Jimmy helped the family financially and loaned money connected to Mikey and The Beef. Later, he becomes an investor and business partner in The Bear. That combination of affection and financial leverage defines his place in the family: he genuinely cares about the siblings, but he also needs the restaurant to become a viable business.

Jimmy can offer practical support because he has resources and experience, but his help is never entirely free of risk. His investment means that the family’s emotional decisions have business consequences. In that sense, he is both a loving uncle figure and a creditor who may eventually demand an answer.

11. Lee Lane: the unofficial family associate

Lee is Jimmy’s business partner and a longtime associate of the Berzatto household. He is sometimes called “Uncle Lee,” but the series does not establish him as a straightforward biological uncle.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In Fishes, Lee’s history with Donna and his hostile relationship with Mikey reveal that the family’s conflict predates Carmy’s return to Chicago. He belongs to the wider family tree because of shared history and proximity, not because the show confirms a blood connection.

Lee is important precisely because he complicates the idea of the family’s “elders.” Jimmy and Lee are part of the adult network surrounding the Berzatto children, but they do not play identical roles. Jimmy’s connection is protective and financial; Lee’s presence exposes older resentments and unresolved tensions.

Confirmed relatives versus honorary family

Category People What the connection means
Confirmed Berzatto blood relatives Donna, Pop, Mikey, Natalie, Carmy, and Michelle Donna and Pop are the parents of Mikey, Natalie, and Carmy. Michelle is explicitly their blood cousin, although her exact branch is not fully mapped onscreen.
Marriage or partnership Pete and Stevie Pete is married to Natalie. Stevie is Michelle’s partner.
Found family and long history Richie, Jimmy, and Lee Richie is Mikey’s best friend and an honorary cousin. Jimmy is Pop’s friend, an honorary uncle, and an investor. Lee is a longtime family associate and Jimmy’s business partner.

This distinction prevents the most common errors in explanations of the family tree. Richie should not be described as a blood cousin. Jimmy should not be described as a literal uncle. Michelle should not be described as Carmy’s sister.

Why The Bear’s family tree is intentionally confusing

The show uses family language as a measure of belonging. A person can be called “Cousin” because they were raised alongside the family, or “Uncle” because they occupied a paternal role, even when no legal or biological relationship exists.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That choice reflects the world of the restaurant. Kitchens create their own hierarchies and loyalties, and The Beef operates like a family business even when its members are not related. At the same time, the Berzattos often behave like coworkers trapped in an inherited workplace: they carry old roles, debts, resentments, and obligations into every new interaction.

Richie is the clearest example. He is outside the bloodline but inside the emotional inheritance. Jimmy is another: his money gives him business authority, while his history with Pop gives him a place in the family’s private life. Lee shows that proximity alone does not equal warmth. The result is a family tree built from both genealogy and accumulated responsibility.

How the family episodes clarify the relationships

Fishes

The Season 2 Christmas flashback is the most concentrated look at the extended Berzatto network. Donna’s escalating instability, Mikey’s volatility, Natalie’s distress, Carmy’s position as the youngest sibling, Michelle’s self-protective distance, Stevie’s outsider perspective, Richie’s closeness to the family, and Lee’s history with Donna all appear within the same pressure-cooker gathering.

The episode also explains why the word “family” in The Bear cannot be reduced to a list of surnames. Several of the most important people in the room are connected by loyalty, friendship, or partnership rather than direct descent.

Ice Chips

Ice Chips shifts attention to Natalie as she approaches motherhood and tries to manage Donna’s involvement. The episode is important to the family tree because it introduces the next generation through Natalie and Pete’s daughter while examining whether Donna can have a relationship with that child without reproducing the damage of the past.

Bears and later references

Bears and later family references expand the story beyond the immediate crisis of Mikey’s death and The Beef. They reinforce how the Berzattos inherit more than a restaurant: they inherit stories about Pop and Donna, memories of Mikey, expectations placed on Carmy and Natalie, and an extended network that treats the family name as both a bond and a burden.

Other people connected to the family—but not part of the 11

The number 11 is a focused editorial grouping, not a complete census of everyone who occupies the Berzatto family’s orbit.

  • Sophia/Sophie Katinsky: Natalie and Pete’s daughter, representing the next generation of the family.
  • Tiffany “Tiff” Jerimovich: Richie’s former wife and Eva’s mother. She is connected to Richie and his family history through marriage and co-parenting, not through Berzatto blood.
  • Eva Jerimovich: Richie and Tiff’s daughter and part of the wider family-by-choice circle.
  • Neil, Ted, Sammy, and Francie Fak: The Faks are close family friends and form a separate family network. They are not Berzattos, even though they frequently occupy family-like space in the series.
  • Cousin Spooky: A referenced but not fully established relative whose exact relationship remains unclear.

Sydney, Tina, Marcus, and the other restaurant staff may become part of The Bear’s chosen family, but they are not Berzatto relatives. Treating every member of the restaurant as a Berzatto would confuse the show’s workplace-family metaphor with its actual family tree.

The clearest way to remember the family tree

  1. Start with Donna and Pop: they are the parents of Mikey, Natalie, and Carmy.
  2. Place Michelle beside the siblings: she is their actual blood cousin, not Carmy’s sister.
  3. Add Pete and Stevie through relationships: Pete is Natalie’s husband; Stevie is Michelle’s partner.
  4. Add Richie, Jimmy, and Lee as social family: Richie is the honorary cousin, Jimmy the honorary uncle and investor, and Lee the longtime associate.
  5. Keep the next generation separate: Sophia/Sophie, Eva, and other connected children expand the family circle but are not part of the core 11-person count.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Richie actually related to the Berzatto family?

No. Richie Jerimovich is not a biological Berzatto. He was Mikey’s best friend, grew up close to the family, and was treated like a son by Donna, which is why the siblings call him “Cousin.”

Is Jimmy Cicero a real uncle?

No. Jimmy is Pop’s longtime friend, a paternal figure to the siblings, and an investor in The Bear. “Uncle” describes his role in the family rather than a confirmed biological relationship.

What happened to Pop Berzatto?

The show has not confirmed Pop’s first name, exact timeline, or fate. It establishes that he disappeared or abandoned the family and that he struggled with drinking, drugs, gambling, and work. His current status should be treated as unresolved.

Why does the article count 11 people if several are not Berzattos?

“All 11 Berzatto family members” is an editorial grouping. It combines the confirmed blood relatives with the spouses, partners, honorary relatives, and longtime associates who function as part of the Berzatto family network.

Are the Faks part of the Berzatto family?

They are close family friends and an important found-family network, but Neil, Ted, Sammy, and Francie Fak are not Berzattos. They should be listed separately from the 11-person Berzatto grouping.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: the real Berzatto bloodline is Donna and Pop, their children Mikey, Natalie, and Carmy, and their cousin Michelle. Pete and Stevie join through marriage and partnership, while Richie, Jimmy, and Lee belong through the kind of long-term loyalty that The Bear treats as family. The confusion is intentional: in this story, “Cousin” and “Uncle” measure belonging as much as biology.
