Where Is Owen Hanson Now? His Release, Businesses and Prime Video Documentary

Owen Hanson is no longer in federal prison. The latest public reporting reviewed for this article says he was released in March 2024 after serving less than seven years of a 255-month sentence. He reportedly remained in transitional housing or a halfway house until late June 2025 and was still subject to supervised release afterward. The exact conditions and end date of that supervision have not been publicly established.

Hanson is now publicly presenting himself as an author, entrepreneur and media participant. His current projects include the memoir The California Kid, California Ice Protein, the No Excuses course and community, interviews, and the 2025 Prime Video documentary series Cocaine Quarterback: Signal-Caller for the Cartel. The phrase cartel kingpin is media shorthand, not a formal legal title—and there is no reliable public evidence in the reviewed sources that Hanson is currently running a drug-trafficking organization.

Owen Hanson’s current status at a glance

Question What the public record and reporting show
Is Owen Hanson still in federal prison? No. He was reportedly released from federal prison in March 2024.
What happened after his release? Reports say he spent additional time in transitional housing or a halfway house and left that placement in late June 2025.
Is he still under supervision? 2025 reporting said he remained on supervised release or parole. The precise conditions and expiration date are not publicly clear.
Where does he live? No reliable public source reviewed for this article establishes his current residence. A private home address should not be published.
What does he do now? He promotes a book, a frozen-dessert business, an educational community, interviews and documentary-related media work.
Is he currently a cartel leader? There is no support for that claim in the reviewed sources. Official government descriptions concern his past criminal enterprise, which operated approximately from 2012 through 2016.

The distinction between being out of Bureau of Prisons custody and being free of all legal supervision matters. The Federal Bureau of Prisons explains that a person listed as released or not in BOP custody may still have another correctional or criminal-justice status, including supervised release.

Why was Owen Hanson sentenced to prison?

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of California, Hanson led the violent ODOG racketeering enterprise, an international operation involved in drug trafficking, illegal gambling and money laundering. Prosecutors described activity in the United States, Central and South America, and Australia.

The government’s account says the organization trafficked cocaine, heroin, methamphetamine, MDMA, marijuana, anabolic steroids and human growth hormone. The FBI says the broader case resulted in charges against 21 associates. Hanson was arrested in September 2015 and pleaded guilty.

On December 15, 2017, Hanson was sentenced to 255 months in federal prison—21 years and three months—followed by lifetime supervised release. He was also ordered to pay $5 million in criminal forfeiture. Those are the central official facts of the criminal case; they should not be confused with later claims made in interviews or promotional material about his transformation.

How did he get out of prison early?

The available reporting says a federal judge, William Hayes, granted a sealed motion in November 2022. The motion reportedly cited extraordinary and compelling reasons and reduced Hanson’s sentence by approximately nine years.

The complete order and the factual basis for the reduction are not available in the public sources reviewed. Later coverage, including reporting summarized from the San Diego Union-Tribune, connected the reduction to Hanson’s cooperation with Australian prosecutors. That reporting referred to testimony in a 2020 trial involving a lawyer accused of laundering money for Hanson’s organization.

That connection should be stated cautiously. The public record reviewed here does not fully describe the cooperation, and the U.S. Attorney’s Office did not publicly detail its extent. It is therefore too broad to say that cooperation was definitively the only reason for the sentence reduction. The reduction was also not an acquittal or a finding that the underlying conviction was wrongful; it was a modification of the prison term.

  5. Late June 2025: Later reports said he left a halfway house or transitional placement.

What is Owen Hanson doing now?

Hanson’s post-incarceration public identity is built around accountability, reinvention and entrepreneurship. His official website describes several projects, but these descriptions are Hanson’s own presentation of his work and should not be treated as independent verification of their results.

The California Kid

Hanson is telling his version of his life and criminal case through Owen Hanson’s memoir, The California Kid. His website sells the book in paperback, while retailer information identifies it as a biography or memoir co-written by Hanson and Alex Cody Foster.

The book is useful for understanding how Hanson wants his story framed, but it is a first-person account and not a substitute for court records, FBI material or Justice Department evidence. Readers should separate the author’s interpretation of his past from independently documented facts.

California Ice Protein

Hanson is also publicly associated with California Ice Protein, a high-protein frozen dessert or protein ice-cream-bar business. The company’s public-facing description says its products are gluten-free, contain no added sugar or artificial sweeteners, and include probiotics. Those are company claims, not independently verified health findings, so they should be read as product-positioning statements rather than medical or nutritional conclusions.

In practical terms, California Ice Protein bars are part of Hanson’s current business portfolio. The public sources reviewed do not establish the company’s scale, financial performance or whether it has an active affiliate or wholesale program.

No Excuses and other media work

Hanson’s website also promotes a No Excuses course and community aimed at people trying to rebuild their lives after destructive choices. He has continued to appear in interviews and podcasts, where he discusses his prison experience, rehabilitation and current ventures.

Those appearances can add context about his self-described rehabilitation and public messaging. They should not be used as primary evidence for disputed details of the criminal case, the sealed sentence reduction or his current supervision.

What is the Prime Video documentary about?

Cocaine Quarterback: Signal-Caller for the Cartel on Prime Video is a three-part documentary series listed by Prime Video as a 2025 release. The episodes were released on September 25, 2025, and the listing identifies Amazon Studios as the studio. Mark Wahlberg’s Unrealistic Ideas is consistently identified in coverage as a producing company associated with the series.

The series follows the transformation of Hanson’s public story from USC football walk-on to involvement in illegal gambling and international drug trafficking. It includes Hanson as a participant and places his life, criminal case and post-prison identity in a documentary and dramatized-media context.

It is important not to treat the program as proof of every detail it depicts. Documentaries may use interviews, archival material, reconstruction and narrative compression. For legal facts, the DOJ and FBI case descriptions and available court information carry more weight than a promotional description or a dramatic retelling.

The official platform listing identifies the program as a Prime Video/Amazon production. It should not be described as a Netflix documentary merely because some secondary podcast or media listings have used that label.

Was Owen Hanson really a cartel kingpin?

The answer depends on what the phrase is intended to mean. Hanson was not merely accused of a minor drug offense. Official Justice Department and FBI materials describe him as the leader of a violent, international racketeering enterprise involved in drug trafficking, illegal gambling and money laundering. That is a serious and documented description of his past criminal conduct.

However, cartel kingpin is a media shorthand rather than a formal legal designation. The official government materials reviewed do not establish that Hanson was the head of a Mexican cartel. They describe the ODOG enterprise and its international reach, not membership in or control of a particular Mexican cartel.

Nor should the phrase be used as a statement about Hanson’s present activity. The operation described by the government operated approximately from 2012 through 2016. The reviewed sources present Hanson’s current public-facing work as business, authorship, interviews and media participation, not as ongoing drug trafficking.

What was Hanson’s USC football background?

Hanson’s football background is real but is often overstated in headlines. FBI material describes him as a popular high-school athlete who found athletic success and social prominence at the University of Southern California. It says he graduated with a business degree and obtained a real-estate license.

Later media accounts describe him as a USC football walk-on and backup associated with national-championship teams. The reliable descriptions support calling him a former USC football walk-on or former USC football player. They do not support presenting him as a star quarterback, a major on-field contributor or a famous college football star without qualification.

The FBI’s case summary also says Hanson’s criminal activity began earlier, including selling recreational drugs and steroids while he was at USC. That background helps explain the contrast emphasized by later documentaries: a socially prominent college athlete who moved into organized criminal activity.

What remains unknown about Owen Hanson’s life now?

  • His exact residence: The public reporting reviewed does not verify where Hanson currently lives.
  • His supervision terms: Reports indicate ongoing supervised release or parole, but the complete conditions are not publicly available.
  • The end date of supervision: No verified public source reviewed here provides a precise expiration date.
  • The full reason for the sentence reduction: The 2022 order was sealed, and the public record does not fully disclose the basis or scope of any cooperation.
  • The independent performance of his businesses and programs: Hanson’s website and company descriptions establish what he promotes, not how successful or effective those ventures are.
  • The line between documentary fact and dramatization: The Prime Video series is a media interpretation of the case and should be read alongside official records.

How to understand the redemption narrative

Hanson’s current public message is that he accepts responsibility for his past and wants to help others avoid or recover from destructive decisions. That is the central theme of his book, course and interviews. It is reasonable to report that this is how he presents himself.

It is equally important to keep that narrative separate from established case facts. A memoir can explain a person’s motives and perspective; it cannot independently settle disputed legal questions. Likewise, a business launch or documentary appearance demonstrates public activity after prison, but it does not by itself prove rehabilitation, remorse, business success or compliance with supervision conditions.

The most accurate summary is therefore straightforward: Hanson is out of federal prison, has reportedly moved beyond halfway-house placement, remains under some form of supervised release according to public reporting, and is building a public life around business and storytelling. The available evidence does not justify saying that he currently runs a cartel.

Source note: The criminal-case and sentence details in this article are based on descriptions from the U.S. Department of Justice and FBI. Release and sentence-reduction details come from later public reporting, including accounts of the sealed 2022 order. Current-project descriptions come from Hanson’s website and company material. Documentary title, platform, episode count and release date come from the official Prime Video listing.
