Why Syfy canceled The Expanse
Contemporary reporting by TheWrap on May 11, 2018, attributed Syfy’s decision to limited linear ratings. It also reported that Syfy held U.S. first-run rights for linear television only. That rights arrangement helps explain the distribution context: the show’s value to Syfy was tied to its linear run, while viewing and distribution elsewhere could benefit other parties. It does not, by itself, establish Syfy’s full financial reasoning, and no audience figures or internal decision records are available here.

Amazon later confirmed that Syfy had canceled the series after three seasons. The cancellation ended its Syfy run, not the story’s television life.
How Prime Video continued the show
In May 2018, Amazon founder and CEO Jeff Bezos announced the continuation at the National Space Society’s annual conference with the line, “The Rocinante is safe.” Amazon’s retrospective says the announcement signaled that the series could continue on Prime Video. Season four premiered there as an Amazon Original in 2019.

In practical terms, Prime Video gave the series a new home after Syfy’s cancellation. The available accounts do not establish that fan campaigning alone secured the pickup or that Bezos personally financed production.

Did Amazon finish The Expanse?
Yes. SYFY Wire reported on November 24, 2020, that Amazon had renewed the show for a sixth and final season. Amazon’s retrospective records the series as reaching six seasons. The TV story draws on the arc of a nine-book series, but the show itself concluded with season six.
