Atlas is a 2024 science-fiction action film about a government analyst who distrusts artificial intelligence but must rely on it during a mission to capture a renegade robot. It pairs a rescue-and-capture adventure with a story about whether Atlas Shepherd can work with the technology she fears.

What is Atlas about?

Atlas Shepherd is a government analyst drawn into a mission involving a renegade robot. Her deep suspicion of AI becomes a practical obstacle when success requires her to cooperate with it. That setup gives the film two connected aims: deliver science-fiction action and develop a human–AI partnership.

Cast and filmmakers

Jennifer Lopez stars as Atlas. Brad Peyton directed the film, and Leo Sardarian and Aron Eli Coleite are credited as writers, according to Netflix’s film feature and Netflix’s title page.

Netflix Tudum describes Atlas as someone who “doesn’t trust anybody and doesn’t want anything to do with AI,” attributing that character description to Lopez. That guardedness is the premise for the film’s central relationship, rather than a claim about real-world artificial intelligence.

How to assess the film

The film’s appeal depends on how well its action adventure and character story work together. The Associated Press review considers the spectacle, dialogue, relationship and emotional dimension; those are useful lenses for deciding whether the film suits your taste, not a substitute for a viewer’s own response.

  • Action and spectacle: Do the science-fiction set pieces keep the mission engaging?
  • Performance and character: Does Lopez make Atlas’s distrust and changing willingness to rely on AI convincing?
  • The partnership: Does the human–AI relationship develop enough to add emotional interest beyond the mission?
  • Writing and plausibility: Do the dialogue and plot logic work within the film’s fictional premise?

The Associated Press review raises the question, “Where’s the love story?” That angle may be useful if you are wondering whether the emotional thread is romantic or principally about trust and cooperation; the film’s core setup is the latter.
