The available account supports a story of uncertainty followed by retention—not a documented cut and restoration.
Which line did Christopher Nolan mean?
It is Harvey Dent’s remark to Bruce Wayne and Rachel Dawes early in The Dark Knight: “You either die a hero or you live long enough to become the villain.” Christopher Nolan attributed the line to his brother and co-writer, Jonathan Nolan. In a 2023 interview about Oppenheimer, he recalled reading it in Jonathan’s draft and deciding to leave it in despite not understanding it at first.
Was the line actually cut?
Not according to Nolan’s account. He said, “I read it in his draft, and I was like, ‘All right, I’ll keep it in there, but I don’t really know what it means. Is that really a thing?’” That describes doubt about the line, followed by a decision to keep it—not a deletion from a draft or a later restoration. Den of Geek’s 2024 report framed the anecdote as the line almost being cut, but its account likewise says Nolan kept it.
In the same interview, Nolan said the line had seemed “truer and truer” in the years since the movie came out. He explained: “Build them up, tear them down. It’s the way we treat people.” Those later reflections help explain why the quotation stayed with him; they do not change what he said about its drafting history.

Why does the quotation matter in the story?
Dent’s line presents public heroism as fragile: acclaim can give way to condemnation. It foreshadows his transformation into Two-Face, while also anticipating Batman’s choice to accept a villainous public image to protect Dent’s reputation as Gotham’s hero. The same idea therefore applies both to Dent’s fall and to Batman’s deliberate sacrifice of his standing.
Is this the same as “Why so serious?”
No. “Why so serious?” is the Joker’s separate phrase, associated with the Gambol scene in which he tells a story about his scars. It also became a tagline for the film’s viral marketing campaign. ACMI’s account of the campaign describes the phrase appearing on posters and billboards before release, as well as on official merchandise including T-shirts, posters, and coffee cups.
