The widely reported wave of unavailable songs on YouTube and YouTube Music in September 2024 was tied to a temporary licensing dispute between YouTube and music-rights organization SESAC. YouTube said its agreement had expired without renewal terms, so it had to block certain SESAC-represented music in the United States. The dispute was reported resolved on September 30, 2024, with YouTube saying the blocked content would return over the following day or two. That episode is not an ongoing outage, and it does not explain every song that may be unavailable today.
What happened in September 2024?
During the dispute, U.S. listeners reported that some songs and videos were unavailable on YouTube and YouTube Music. One message shown to users read: “This video contains content from SESAC. It is not available in your country.” Android Authority reported that YouTube said its music license agreement with SESAC had expired without an agreement on renewal conditions, requiring it to block certain music in the U.S. (Android Authority, September 2024).

On September 30, YouTube announced a new deal with SESAC. It said content that had been blocked would be restored across YouTube services over the next day or two (Android Authority, September 30, 2024). This was the expected restoration window announced at the time; it does not establish that every individual recording is playable now.
The incident was specific to certain music and the United States. It should not be described as a worldwide removal or as proof that songs were permanently deleted. YouTube described a licensing block, and its later restoration announcement described the content as previously blocked.

Why can a song be blocked even when the artist is still on YouTube?
A song can involve separate rights in the sound recording and in the underlying musical composition. A record label commonly controls or administers rights in a particular recording, while publishers and collecting or performing-rights organizations may administer rights in the composition. The parties handling those rights can also differ by country or territory (YouTube Help: music rights).
That means an artist’s presence on the service—or the availability of one version of a song—does not guarantee that every recording, upload, or territory has the same status. A studio recording, live performance, cover, and user-uploaded video may involve different rights and policies.

What “unavailable” can mean on YouTube
Licensing is one possible reason, but not the only one. YouTube says rights holders may choose to monetize a video, block it worldwide, or block it only in selected countries or regions. Contractual obligations can also require particular videos to be removed or blocked in specific territories. Rights holders can change their policies or issue takedown notices, so a video that once played may later become unavailable (YouTube Help: music rights; YouTube Help: blocked videos).
- Territorial restriction: A recording may be blocked where a rights holder has not granted the relevant permission, while remaining available elsewhere.
- Rights or contract change: A license may expire, or an agreement may require a block or removal.
- Rights-holder policy or takedown: A rights holder may change how a video is handled or submit a copyright takedown request.
- Different version: Another upload may be a different recording with a different rights status, rather than a substitute with identical availability.
How to check a song that is unavailable now
- Note the exact version. Record the song title, artist, and whether the listing is an official release, a live version, a cover, or a user-uploaded video.
- Check the message and location. A notice that says the video is unavailable “in your country” indicates a territorial restriction, but does not by itself identify the agreement or rights holder behind it.
- Compare listings carefully. Search for another official listing of the same recording. A different upload or performance may have different rights, so its availability does not prove the original has returned.
- Recheck if the change is recent. Availability can change when rights-holder policies or agreements change. An earlier successful play does not guarantee continued access.
Without the exact song or recording and the listener’s territory, the specific reason for a current block cannot be determined from the general YouTube guidance. If checking another service, compare the precise recording, your region, and whether the listing is an official release or user upload; availability should not be assumed to match YouTube’s.
