Pete Davidson said the attention around his so-called “big dick energy” embarrassed and hurt him because it made his sex life the story while his work went unmentioned. Looking back in an August 2025 interview, he described feeling publicly sexualized and said the coverage affected his relationships. His reaction contrasts with a joking response he gave when the meme spread in 2018—but that earlier humor does not establish that the attention left him unaffected.
Why Davidson said the attention hurt
In an August 2025 appearance on The Breakfast Club, Davidson reflected on how coverage of his dating life and anatomy had followed him while he was on Saturday Night Live. “I was embarrassed by it,” he said. He also recalled thinking, “No one talked about any work I was doing,” adding, “And that hurt so much.”
Davidson said the attention made the show feel more tabloid-oriented and described feeling sad about it. He said it affected his relationships and dating, and recalled being pointed out in public. Those are his accounts of his own experience, not independently measured effects. The interview transcript and program page provide his retrospective comments.
What he recalled about the origin of the BDE label
Davidson said he thought the framing began in a publication after he started dating someone that publication considered “out of my league.” He guessed it might have been The New York Times, then softened the recollection with “or something.” That is an uncertain memory, not confirmation that the Times originated the label or that a particular article did. The interview also does not establish whom he meant when he said someone later “confirmed it.”

How his 2018 response differed
When the meme was circulating in 2018, Davidson told Variety, “I don’t hate it,” and joked about his mother’s reaction. The profile placed the meme amid online attention to a since-deleted suggestive tweet from Ariana Grande during their relationship. His joking public response at the time and his more painful retrospective account in 2025 describe different moments; the earlier remark is not proof that he felt no discomfort. Variety’s 2018 profile gives the contemporary context.

The viral “10 inches” line was a joke, not a verified measurement. Grande’s original post was deleted; contemporary coverage preserves the exchange. E! News reported the now-deleted joke and how the song-length question was corrected, so the wording should be attributed to that reporting rather than treated as a live post. E! News’ 2018 account describes the exchange.
In a September 24, 2018 recap of his Howard Stern Show appearance, Davidson said, “I think I have an average-size penis,” and followed it with, “Everything’s big to her.” The report did not give exact measurements. In 2025, Complex reported that Davidson clarified he did not think the ten-inch claim was true. Neither the joke nor his comments establish a measured figure.
