Universal Pictures released the official Wicked trailer on May 15, 2024, introducing Ariana Grande as Glinda and Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba. Grande’s pink, polished styling gives Glinda a striking visual entrance, but the trailer’s story is about more than a look: it follows the witches’ lives before Dorothy arrives in Oz, beginning with their meeting at Shiz University.

Watch Universal Pictures’ official Wicked trailer, published May 15, 2024. The preview moves between the spectacle of Oz and the relationship at the story’s center: two young women whose friendship will be tested by their different paths.
Who Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo play
Grande plays Glinda, a popular young woman associated in Universal’s trailer description with privilege and ambition. Erivo plays Elphaba, a young woman misunderstood because of her green skin who has not yet discovered her power. The pink styling that gives this trailer its eye-catching image is a visual reading of Glinda’s presentation, not a documented quote from Grande about the look.
What the trailer’s story sets up
Wicked tells the witches’ story before Dorothy’s arrival. Glinda and Elphaba meet at Shiz University and form an unlikely friendship. Their experiences and choices eventually take them in different directions, giving the familiar Oz story a perspective centered on the witches rather than Dorothy.

The film adapts the Broadway musical, which was adapted from Gregory Maguire’s 1995 novel. That lineage makes the trailer an introduction to a film version of a story that has already moved from novel to stage and now to screen.
How the film builds its version of Oz
The scale behind the trailer’s imagery is part of the film’s appeal. NBCUniversal’s 2024 film guide says the production planted nearly nine million tulips to help create its Oz environment. The same guide reports that approximately 150 costume artisans—including makers, tailors, custom weavers and embroiderers—worked on the costumes. These are studio-reported production figures, not independent counts.

Director Jon M. Chu summed up the production’s approach to creating the setting in NBCUniversal’s fan guide: “If you want to be inside that world, you have to build it.” The emphasis on constructed sets and detailed costumes helps explain why the trailer presents Oz as a tangible place, not only a digital backdrop.

What the trailer’s popularity builds on
The film arrived with a well-established stage legacy. In a 2024 licensing article, NBCUniversal quoted Universal Products & Experiences as reporting that the stage musical had sold over 65 million tickets across more than 100 cities and 16 countries. That figure describes the musical, not the film’s ticket sales.
The same article documents a broad merchandise campaign, with licensed offerings spanning toys, apparel, accessories and home goods. Product lines and availability can change, so a past collaboration does not guarantee that a particular item is currently for sale.
