Yes—Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande sang live on set while filming Wicked, and the official trailer previews their performances. But the trailer is an edited promotional video, not a continuous live recording.
Which Wicked trailer is this?
This is the official trailer for the first Wicked film, announced by NBCUniversal on May 15, 2024. The movie is the first part of Jon M. Chu’s two-part adaptation of the stage musical. The official trailer features Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba and Ariana Grande as Glinda.
In the film’s story, the two meet at Shiz University and form an unlikely friendship before their paths diverge toward the figures known as the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good. NBCUniversal’s 2024 trailer announcement describes the movie as a two-part film adaptation of the Tony Award-winning musical.
Did the actors sing live on set?
Yes. NBCUniversal’s official behind-the-scenes page includes a featurette titled “Wicked – Singing Live on Set” and describes the approach with the line, “The true magic in Wicked? Singing live.” The featurette is direct studio evidence that live singing on set was part of the production. Watch NBCUniversal’s behind-the-scenes featurettes.

That supports the straightforward answer to whether the principal performers sang or simply lip-synced during filming: the production highlighted singing live on set, including in material associated with Erivo and Grande’s performances.
What “singing live” does—and does not—tell you
Live singing on set describes how performances were made during filming. It does not mean the official trailer is an untouched on-set recording: trailers are edited promotional videos. Nor do the official pages detail the recording method for every song and take or explain how live vocals and any post-production material were combined in the finished film. So it is accurate to say the actors sang live on set, but not to claim that every final vocal is an unedited, continuous live take.
