Australian breaker Rachael Gunn, known as Raygun, became one of the defining viral stories of Paris 2024 after competing in the women’s breaking event. Netflix’s 2026 documentary Untold Raygun: Breaking Badly revisits her Olympic experience and the backlash that followed. The phrase “Raygun Olympics” appears in the assigned headline, but the accessible reporting does not establish who said it or the context, so it should not be attributed to a particular documentary maker.
Why Raygun became a defining story of Paris 2024
Gunn’s Olympic performance drew intense attention online, where clips and memes circulated alongside ridicule and criticism. The response was not uniform: some people defended her right to compete and argued that individuality and experimentation belong in breaking, while others criticized the performance and raised questions about cultural representation and hip-hop’s place in the Olympic event. ABC’s reporting documents these differing views rather than a single consensus across the breaking community.
In the Netflix documentary, Gunn says, “I can’t just be a meme,” according to the Associated Press. The film revisits both her experience at the Games and the reaction afterward.
How Raygun qualified—and what happened in her Olympic battles
Qualification was decided before Paris
Gunn secured her Olympic place by winning the 2023 Oceania Breaking Championships in Sydney, according to the Australian Olympic Committee and ABC News. That result explains how she qualified; it does not, by itself, settle broader claims about whether she was Australia’s “best” breaker, a judgment that remains contested.

Her Olympic result was not a disqualification
At Paris, Gunn competed in face-to-face battles in the women’s event. ABC reports that she did not score a point in her Olympic bouts. That is a description of the battle results, not evidence that she was disqualified. The outcome also should be kept distinct from arguments about artistic merit or what breaking ought to look like.
What the backlash involved
Gunn described the online response in an interview with ITV’s Good Morning Britain: “The conspiracy theories, the hysteria, the bullying, the harassment. I mean, it was off the charts.” This is her account of the backlash, not an independently quantified measure of public reaction.

ITV reported on August 25, 2026, that an online petition attacking Gunn and alleging she manipulated Olympic qualification had received nearly 50,000 signatures. The Australian Olympic Committee characterized the petition as “vexatious, misleading and bullying,” as reported by ITV. The petition’s claims should not be presented as established facts.
Why breaking’s judging and cultural meaning were debated
Breaking is judged through battles, but debate about a result can extend beyond the score to different ideas about originality, performance and cultural legitimacy. ABC quoted breaker and anthropologist Lucas Marie: “It’s not like gymnastics where there’s this kind of agreed-upon standard.” That observation helps explain why viewers could disagree sharply about Gunn’s performance without those reactions amounting to a single verdict from the sport or its community.

Sarah Hook, Marie Hadley and Vicki Huang’s 2025 article in Law Text Culture examines the performance’s meme circulation and divided reception, as well as commercial uses of Gunn’s image and choreography. It notes that themed decorations, ornaments and clothing appeared in the 2024 holiday season and discusses a legal dispute connected to a proposed stage musical. That account is context for the afterlife of the viral moment, not evidence that those products remain available.

Untold Raygun: Breaking Badly brings Gunn’s experience and the aftermath back into focus, but a documentary about a highly contested event is not a substitute for separating the documented facts from opinion. The qualification route and Olympic battle results are distinct; the reaction included both mockery and defense; and Gunn’s description of harassment should remain attributed to her.
