YouTube Shopping has two different routes: connect your own store to feature products you sell, or—if your channel qualifies—tag products from participating retailers and potentially earn commissions. Check which route fits your goal first; the eligibility rules, setup, and earnings are different.
Choose the right YouTube Shopping route

The first two are creator routes. Shopify merchant participation is a separate way for a merchant to make products available to creators; it is not a substitute for creator eligibility.
Check whether your channel qualifies
For affiliate product tagging
YouTube’s affiliate program requires a channel to be in the YouTube Partner Program (YPP) and meet the applicable YPP subscriber threshold. The threshold can depend on the feature and location, so check the current YPP requirements and your channel’s YouTube Studio → Earn tab rather than relying on a number quoted elsewhere. YouTube notes that pilot criteria may differ. Review YouTube’s affiliate program eligibility guidance.
The currently listed eligible countries are Argentina, Brazil, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Mexico, the Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, the United States, and Vietnam. Music channels, Official Artist Channels, channels associated with music partners, and channels set as Made for Kids—or with a significant number of Made for Kids videos—are excluded under the general criteria. Eligibility and country coverage can change; the Earn tab is the practical place to check whether the option is available to your account.

For your own store
You need an eligible YouTube channel and a store on a supported platform or retailer. Connecting a store does not automatically approve every product: connected items are reviewed against YouTube and Google Merchant Center policies. Use YouTube’s current store connection guidance to confirm supported options and channel requirements.
Connect your own store in YouTube Studio
- On a computer, sign in to YouTube Studio with the channel that will feature the products.
- Open Earn → Shopping. Start setup or choose Connect new store; exact wording may vary by account or device.
- Follow the on-screen steps to connect the official store on a supported platform or retailer. Make sure you connect the store intended for that channel.
- Wait for the products to be reviewed. YouTube says review typically takes a few business days. Check Studio and your store or Merchant Center for product status and disapproval details.
YouTube’s store integration documentation covers the connection and product-policy requirements at Connect, manage, and disconnect your store on YouTube. Products must comply with YouTube’s Terms of Service, monetization policies, Community Guidelines, paid promotion and endorsement policies, and applicable Google Shopping policies, including prohibited content rules. Violations can result in loss of Shopping features or account termination.

Shopify merchant setup is a separate path
The documented Google Merchant Center route for Shopify merchants has specific conditions; they should not be treated as universal requirements for every store integration. Google’s guide currently specifies:
- Shopify Advanced or Plus; Shopify headless commerce is excluded.
- A US target country in Merchant Center, a US billing address, and USD currency.
- The Google & YouTube app, a connected Merchant Center account, and automated product sync.
- Conversion tracking and auto-tagging.
- Most third-party feed providers are not eligible under this documented route.
The affiliate-program card is displayed only to eligible merchants. Check the current Google Merchant Center Shopify merchant instructions before changing store, feed, or account settings.

Enroll in creator affiliate tagging
- Confirm that your channel is in YPP and that the affiliate program is available for your country and channel.
- In YouTube Studio, open Earn and look for the Shopping affiliate program invitation or section.
- Review and accept the program terms to enroll. The button or section name can differ by account or device.
- When creating or editing eligible content, use the product-tagging controls to find and select products from participating retailers.
If you do not see the program, check your Earn tab and current eligibility rather than assuming a store connection will unlock affiliate access. YouTube’s overview explains the affiliate requirements and enrollment.
Where products appear and how to tag them
Products connected to your store may appear in your channel store, video descriptions, product shelves, Shopping buttons or stickers, and collections. Some products can appear automatically after connection. You can arrange products and tag or reorder up to 60 items for an individual video or Short. What a viewer sees depends in part on shipping availability and their location. See YouTube’s instructions for managing products from your store.

Make every tag relevant and easy to identify
- Tag a product actually featured in the content, not an unrelated item.
- Make it prominent and identifiable, and mention it verbally or with on-screen text where appropriate.
- Show or explain it clearly enough that a viewer can understand why it relates to the video.
- Use the product as intended and safely.
- Remove a tag if the video does not give viewers a meaningful reason to consider that product.
In long-form video, tags may be presented through a Shopping button. In Shorts, the first product in the tagged list is surfaced as the product sticker unless you change the order. YouTube may localize affiliate product matches for viewers in other regions based on relevance, retailer reliability, pricing, and availability. Paid product placement tags are not localized in the same way described for affiliate tags. Follow YouTube’s current product-tagging guidance.

With your own store, revenue comes from sales of your products under the store’s checkout and terms. With affiliate tagging, you may earn a commission when a viewer makes an eligible attributed purchase. A purchase of other products on the retailer’s site after a tag click may also qualify, depending on program terms. Commission rates and attribution periods vary by seller or product; there is no single standard YouTube rate. Retailers provide the product details, prices, availability, warnings, and purchase conditions, which can change. Check the active offer in Studio and the retailer’s terms before estimating earnings. Use YouTube’s paid promotion or endorsement disclosures whenever applicable, and follow the advertising rules that apply where you publish and where your audience is located. The separate affiliate partnerships boost feature lets opted-in creators allow tagged sellers or brands to use videos in campaigns and may pay on qualifying purchases. YouTube says it is available only to a small creator group and is not global access; do not assume it is part of standard affiliate enrollment. See YouTube’s affiliate partnerships boost details.
Common problems and what to check
- Shopping or affiliate controls are missing: Check the channel’s Earn tab, YPP status, location, channel category, and Made for Kids settings against the current eligibility rules. The own-store and affiliate routes have separate requirements.
- A connected product is not visible: Check its review status, store feed, shipping availability, and whether it can be shown to viewers in their region. Some connected products may appear automatically, but visibility is not guaranteed in every location.
- A product is disapproved: Review the policy and product status in Studio and Merchant Center or your store administrator’s tools. YouTube says disapproved products can be appealed through the merch retailer or store administrator in Merchant Center.
- The tag feels unrelated or unclear: Replace or remove it. Tags should match what the video features and show clearly enough to be useful.
- A commission or sale does not match your estimate: Check the current offer, eligible-purchase definition, attribution terms, and retailer’s order details. Rates and attribution conditions vary.
