For a documentary channel that needs to loop uploaded programs on YouTube, StreamNeo is the first option to try if a cloud playlist service fits the workflow: it runs the stream continuously from the cloud, supports uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and gives each account one free day. It is not a like-for-like replacement for a configurable encoder pipeline. Between the two products in this comparison, Wowza Video has a documented hosted 24×7 channel and YouTube RTMP target workflow, while AWS Elemental MediaLive is a managed encoder that can be used in an AWS workflow. MediaLive is listed by YouTube as a verified encoder, but that does not make it a turnkey 24/7 channel service.
First, distinguish the two Wowza products
“Wowza” can mean two different services. Wowza Video is the hosted service whose documentation describes a 24×7 channel and a way to send a stream to YouTube. Wowza Streaming Engine is separate software with private-cloud and on-premises deployment options. Their deployment models and prices are not interchangeable.
MediaLive, by contrast, is AWS’s managed live-encoding service. An AWS channel takes source content from attached inputs, transcodes it, and packages it into configured outputs. AWS documents a maximum of two push inputs and up to 20 pull inputs per channel, subject to additional feature rules.
How the options compare for YouTube
| Question | AWS Elemental MediaLive | Wowza Video |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | A managed encoder within an AWS workflow; a channel ingests input, transcodes it, and packages outputs. | A hosted service with a documented 24×7 channel mode. |
| YouTube path | YouTube lists MediaLive as a verified encoder. The listing confirms encoder recognition, not a fully configured YouTube event or unattended transmission. | Wowza documents creating a YouTube live stream, retrieving its stream URL and key, then configuring a custom RTMP target for the Wowza stream or transcoder rendition. |
| 24/7 operation | MediaLive charges for inputs and configured outputs; a running channel has no separate channel charge. An output configured in a running channel can incur charges even while paused. The complete workflow must be designed and costed. | The 24×7 mode must be enabled for an eligible account; it is unavailable in trial accounts. Its documented channel runs until stopped, and its billing mode cannot be changed after creation. |
| 4K and recording in 24×7 mode | The cited MediaLive material does not establish a single universal answer for every configuration. Verify the required input, codec, output, and supporting-service combination for your workflow. | Wowza’s 24×7 setup reference says these streams do not support 4K and cannot be recorded. |
| Published price evidence | AWS’s worked example gives component costs for one specific event; it is not a universal hourly rate or a quote for a YouTube-only 24/7 channel. | The retrieved Wowza Video enterprise pricing page describes 24×7 streaming as available at scale but directs buyers to contact Wowza; it does not publish a direct 24×7 quote. |
The YouTube steps in Wowza’s tutorial depend on a subscription that supports passthrough, so confirm that your account is eligible before building around that route. In the described configuration, YouTube—not Wowza Video—does the transcoding. For MediaLive, the verified-encoder listing is useful evidence of compatibility at the encoder level, but you still need to configure the channel, outputs, and YouTube handoff for your own event.

Choose based on the workflow you actually need
Choose Wowza Video when the hosted 24×7 channel is the closer fit
Wowza Video is worth evaluating when you want a dedicated hosted channel and its documented RTMP target workflow matches your YouTube setup. Confirm account enablement, subscription eligibility, region, and the 24×7 mode’s limitations before committing. The inability to record the described 24×7 stream or output 4K may rule it out for a documentary operation that needs an archive or a 4K feed.
Choose MediaLive when an AWS-managed encoding workflow fits
MediaLive may fit when you need managed encoding and integration with other AWS components, and have the technical capacity to configure and operate the channel, inputs, outputs, and YouTube connection. YouTube’s verified-encoder listing is not a promise that MediaLive will create the YouTube event, manage your stream key, provide a complete 24/7 workflow, or guarantee uninterrupted transmission. Plan and validate those parts separately.

Do not treat Wowza Streaming Engine as the Wowza Video price
Wowza’s published Basic Monthly price for Streaming Engine is $195 per month for one instance and includes up to 10 concurrent transcoded channels, according to its pricing page retrieved October 3, 2026. That is a Streaming Engine software plan—not the price of Wowza Video’s 24×7 mode. The retrieved Wowza Video enterprise page provides no direct 24×7 price, so request a quote for the eligible plan and intended workload.
What a fair cost comparison includes
MediaLive’s input-and-output charges are only part of a possible AWS architecture. Depending on how you package and deliver the stream, services such as MediaPackage and CloudFront can add costs. For a YouTube-only destination, YouTube receives the encoder feed and handles delivery to viewers; do not automatically add a CloudFront viewer-delivery estimate to that scenario. Packaging, origination, or CDN charges may still matter if the same workflow also serves your website players or other endpoints.

AWS’s Live Streaming on AWS deployment guide gives an illustrative US East (N. Virginia) estimate of approximately $69.74 for one hour of an SD 540p event watched by about 1,000 viewers. Its estimate allocates $1.99/hour to MediaLive, $0.11/hour to MediaPackage ingest, $0.40/hour to packaging/origination, and $67.24 to CloudFront distribution for 791 GB. The guide says the example excludes test-player storage; its revision date was not stated in the retrieved material. This is a worked AWS solution example, not a quote for a YouTube-only channel or an always-on workload. Its CloudFront portion reflects that example’s audience delivery and should not be scaled linearly into a forecast without matching bitrate, concurrency, cache behavior, geography, and delivery route.

- Input count, input type, and any redundancy you require.
- Codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and number of configured outputs.
- Whether the service is billed for continuous operation, and the exact 24×7 subscription terms.
- Packaging, origination, and any destination beyond YouTube that needs its own delivery path.
- Recording and storage needs, plus monitoring and support expectations.
- Region and current account-specific pricing.
AWS offers on-demand, reserved, and discounted pricing options. Use a workload-specific estimate or vendor quote; multiplying the one-hour example by 24 would not turn it into a reliable daily price.

- Define the program and destinations. Decide whether you are encoding a live source or sending a prebuilt program, whether you need an archive, which resolution and frame rate are required, and whether YouTube is the only destination. These decisions determine the relevant inputs, outputs, and supporting services.
- Confirm product and account eligibility. For Wowza Video, verify access to 24×7 mode and a subscription that supports the documented passthrough route. For MediaLive, confirm the channel configuration and supporting AWS services needed for your intended outputs.
- Create and check the YouTube live event. Wowza’s tutorial calls for creating the event in YouTube Studio and obtaining its stream URL and key before setting up the custom RTMP target. Treat the key as a credential: enter it only in the intended service and keep it out of public notes or logs.
- Validate the encoder-to-YouTube handoff. MediaLive’s verified listing does not supply your event configuration. Follow the current AWS and YouTube instructions for the specific channel and output rather than assuming a generic configuration or automatic key management.
- Test the whole operating path before relying on it. Verify that the source reaches the service, the configured output reaches the intended YouTube event, and the resulting stream behaves as required. Check recording, recovery, and additional-destination needs independently; the cited evidence does not establish a like-for-like uptime or failover comparison.
Common failure points and what to check
- The YouTube target does not receive a feed: verify that the event’s stream URL and key were entered into the intended custom target and that the Wowza subscription supports passthrough. For MediaLive, inspect the channel input and configured output, then check the current AWS-to-YouTube configuration requirements.
- A planned Wowza 24×7 setup cannot be enabled: check whether 24×7 mode has been enabled for the account and whether the account is eligible; trial accounts do not have access to this mode.
- The design assumes a recording or 4K output on Wowza 24×7: revise the requirement or validate another architecture before setup. The documented Wowza 24×7 mode does not support either.
- The AWS estimate is much higher than the encoder line item: review configured outputs and any MediaPackage, CloudFront, or other services in the architecture. A public-stream delivery estimate and a YouTube-only feed are not the same cost model.
- A paused output still appears in the estimate: AWS says an output configured in a running channel may be charged even when paused. Recheck the actual running configuration and current pricing rather than assuming pause removes the charge.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your documentary channel plays uploaded recordings or a playlist on YouTube rather than going live from a camera, StreamNeo is the simpler alternative to try first: upload your video, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The cloud keeps the loop running without a computer, OBS, or home connection left on. Each slot includes one always-on YouTube stream, 10 GB of storage per slot pooled across active slots, playlists and 24/7 looping, automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream, and StreamNeo team support. Your uploads stream as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; plans differ by duration, not features. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. UPI and cards are available in India; card checkout is available worldwide. StreamNeo sends to YouTube only and plays uploaded videos rather than going live from a camera. See StreamNeo, then start your free day.
