The organization had also faced serious criticism over forum moderation and child-safety concerns, followed by backlash over its changing position on generative AI. Those controversies damaged trust, but the available coverage does not establish that they alone caused the closure: the organization pointed to longstanding financial strain and declining participation.
What shut down—and what did not
NaNoWriMo was both a nonprofit organization and the name commonly used for its November writing challenge. The challenge asked participants to draft 50,000 words of a novel during November, an average pace of about 1,667 words a day. The nonprofit’s closure did not make that writing goal disappear. In its closure email, reported by The Guardian, the organization said: “We hold no belief that people will stop writing 50,000 words in November.”
The challenge began informally in 1999 and grew into an international writing community. Following the closure announcement, alternative communities and challenge formats continued, although the cited coverage does not provide a current, comprehensive comparison of their features or safety practices.
Why did NaNoWriMo shut down?
Financial strain and declining participation
In April 2025, interim executive director Kilby Blades announced that the nonprofit would begin shutting down and attributed the decision to ongoing financial problems. Publishers Weekly reported Blades’ account of a six-year downward trend in participation. The coverage does not provide an annual series or a percentage decline, nor does it establish the organization’s final debt or detailed financial position.

Blades described the closure as “a logical outcome of longstanding circumstances, not a salacious tale of scandal,” according to Publishers Weekly. That framing matters: the scandals were part of the organization’s difficult final years, but the nonprofit’s stated explanation was financial, alongside a reported long-running participation decline.
Moderation and child-safety concerns
Community members raised concerns about the organization’s handling of allegations involving a forum moderator and broader questions about child safety. The Guardian’s reporting describes complaints and allegations, not a finding that the moderator committed grooming. It also reports that the moderator was removed weeks later for unrelated violations of the organization’s code of conduct. Those distinctions should not be collapsed into a claim of established misconduct.

Backlash over the AI statement
In 2024, NaNoWriMo faced criticism for a statement on generative AI in creative writing. Its initial language argued against categorically condemning AI and drew criticism for seeming to endorse its use. After revisions, the organization described itself as neutral toward AI and said ethical use should be advocated. Publishers Weekly reported that authors Maureen Johnson and Daniel José Older resigned from the board in response.
It is therefore too broad to say that NaNoWriMo endorsed every use of AI, or that the AI controversy by itself shut the organization down. The public position changed, and the dispute contributed to reputational damage amid existing concerns about community trust and finances.

NaNoWriMo closure timeline
- 1999: The writing challenge began informally.
- 2023: Community members raised moderation and safety concerns with the board, according to later reporting by The Guardian.
- 2024: The organization’s AI statement prompted criticism and revisions; board resignations followed.
- April 2025: The nonprofit announced it would begin shutting down, citing ongoing financial problems.
How many people took part?
Euronews reported that 413,295 people participated in the 2022 edition. That is a figure for that specific edition, reported retrospectively in 2025—not a current participation count. Blades’ reported six-year downward trend gives context to the closure, but the available coverage does not quantify the decline year by year.
Can you still do the November writing challenge?
Yes. The nonprofit’s closure ended the organization, not the idea of drafting 50,000 words in November. The Guardian reported that the closure email noted alternatives had appeared and that people had found one another. If you choose another community, check what it actually offers rather than assuming it reproduces the old NaNoWriMo experience.

- Is the site affiliated with the former nonprofit, or is it an independent alternative?
The sources cited here confirm that alternatives continued but do not establish which current platform is best. A notebook or journal can also serve as a simple offline place to track a daily word count, without depending on a particular website.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What is known about the websites?
The Guardian reported that NaNoWriMo planned to keep its websites live “for as long as possible,” but the closure coverage does not specify an exact date when the old site would go offline. Availability may therefore change; the organization’s closure announcement is not a guarantee that its former services remain accessible.
