Kristine Barnett’s public claims about Natalia Grace and Natalia’s denials are disputed accounts, not established findings. The criminal cases against Kristine and Michael Barnett concerned neglect charges; their outcomes did not decide whether either side’s separate allegations of abuse were true.
What Kristine Barnett alleged—and Natalia’s response
After neglect charges against the Barnetts became public in September 2019, Kristine Barnett told media she had become suspicious of Natalia’s age based on physical signs and alleged that Natalia was violent and threatened family members, ABC News reported. Those statements are Barnett’s claims, not verified findings. ABC also reported that Natalia denied the Barnetts’ allegations in a 2019 television interview.

In an interview published in January 2025, Natalia again denied physically abusing Kristine and Michael, according to The Independent’s account of a People interview. The reporting available here does not establish the truth of either side’s disputed account.
TIME reported that documentary coverage included accusations from both sides. It also reported that Kristine Barnett did not participate in The Curious Case of Natalia Grace or respond to that production’s request for comment. That reported nonparticipation is not a comprehensive denial and does not prove or disprove any allegation.

What the court record establishes
The Court of Appeals of Indiana’s 2021 opinion recounts that Natalia was born in Ukraine in 2003, entered the United States in 2008, and was adopted by Kristine and Michael Barnett in 2010. The opinion describes Natalia as having diastrophic dysplasia and says the Barnetts were married at the time of the adoption and divorced in 2014.
In June 2012, the Barnetts petitioned to change Natalia’s listed birth year from 2003 to 1989, relying on age estimates from a primary care physician and a social worker. The probate court granted the petition 11 days later. The appellate opinion says the court did not appoint Natalia a guardian ad litem or hold an evidentiary hearing before granting the change; Natalia was hospitalized when the petition was served.

After the order, the Barnetts moved Natalia to her own apartment and helped her obtain federal disability benefits and support services. A child-in-need-of-services petition was later dismissed after Natalia had been judicially determined to be an adult. In July 2013, the Barnetts moved her to an apartment in Tippecanoe County near a bus line and services, then moved to Canada with their biological children. According to the opinion, they paid the first year’s rent but gave no further financial support; Natalia received $733 per month in federal disability benefits.
These details are the appellate opinion’s account of the legal and chronological history. They are not, by themselves, findings about intent, neglect, or the truth of the later abuse allegations.

What the neglect cases decided—and what they did not
ABC News reports that Michael Barnett was acquitted of neglect charges in late 2022 and the charges against Kristine Barnett were dismissed in March 2023. Those outcomes concern the criminal neglect cases. They do not constitute a judicial finding that Natalia abused the Barnetts, or that the Barnetts abused Natalia.
It is important to keep four issues separate: the 2012 birth-year change, the allegations underlying the neglect charges, the competing public accounts of abuse, and the eventual criminal-case outcomes. The appellate opinion recounts procedure and history; it was not a trial verdict on the disputed abuse claims.
