Katy Perry said in February 2024 that Season 22 of American Idol would probably be her last. She wanted time to travel, make music and potentially tour—not to announce a specific new project. Two months later, she described the goodbye as “for now,” leaving a return possible but unconfirmed.
Why did Katy Perry say she was leaving American Idol?
During a February 12, 2024 appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Perry said the upcoming season would “probably” be her last after seven seasons as a judge. ABC News reported her comments the next day. Perry said she loved the show and that it had connected her to “the heart of America,” but she wanted to go out, see the world and perhaps bring new music.
That was Perry’s stated reason for stepping away. The announcement did not identify a dispute with the show or its production as the cause.
What did “something is coming” refer to?
Perry said her fellow judges knew she had plans and had seen her in the studio. She also teased that “it’s going to be a very, very exciting year.” Her comments suggested music-related activity, but she did not name an album, tour or other specific project in that February interview. ABC News’ February 13, 2024 report contains the announcement and its context.

In hindsight, the Associated Press reported on April 18, 2025, that Perry had released the album 143. That later release gives context to her mention of new music, but Perry did not name 143 during the 2024 announcement, and the later report does not establish that it was the particular project she was teasing. The AP report covered the album in connection with her tour.
Did Perry rule out returning to American Idol?
No. In an April 12, 2024 interview on Good Morning America, Perry said she wanted to sing, play music and tour. She called her departure goodbye “for now” and told her incoming replacement, “Keep my seat warm.” Those remarks left open the possibility of a return; they were not a confirmed plan to come back. ABC News’ April 12 follow-up reports her comments.
