In Squid Game Season 2, he returns to the deadly competition three years after winning, giving up his plan to go to the United States. Netflix says he comes back with a new resolution: to find out who is behind the game and why they run it.
Why is Player 456 back in the game?
Netflix’s official Season 2 synopsis says Gi-hun turns away from going to the States and re-enters the competition with a new purpose. The season guide frames his central effort as discovering the people behind the game and their reasons for running it; a teaser announcement describes him as being on a mission to expose the competition. The trailer sets up that objective, but it does not establish how his mission ends. Netflix Tudum’s Season 2 guide and the official teaser announcement provide the premise.
What does the trailer reveal about Gi-hun’s change?
Gi-hun’s return is not a reset to the person he was before the first game. Creator and director Hwang Dong-hyuk said, “There’s something inside him that has just been broken,” adding that Gi-hun had “experienced too many things — witnessed too many deaths — for him to return to the way he was before.” Lee Jung-jae likewise said, “The way you see Gi-hun in Season 1 and the state that you see him in Season 2 are very different.” Netflix Tudum reports that Lee described the second season’s focus as Gi-hun’s determination. Netflix Tudum’s interview with Hwang and Lee discusses the character shift.
What do the X and O badges mean?
The trailer points to a choice among the players: Netflix reports Hwang’s explanation that X and O badges signal decisions on a divisive, mysterious matter. They make player choice part of the season’s setup, without revealing the eventual consequences. The official synopsis also says the new participants are seeking a 45.6 billion won prize. Netflix Tudum’s season guide gives the official premise and prize figure.
