If a voice is describing your YouTube TV program, it is usually coming from one of three places: an audio-description track, the broadcaster’s channel feed, or your television or streaming device’s screen reader. The quickest way to identify it is to listen to what the voice says.
If it describes scenes and actions, check the program’s audio track. If it reads menus, buttons, or channel changes, check your device’s accessibility settings. If it happens only on one channel, show, or recording—and YouTube TV offers only Primary—the narration may be part of the broadcaster or local affiliate feed.
Identify the voice before trying to fix it

Audio description is an accessibility service that speaks important visual information for blind or low-vision viewers. The FCC explains that video description is normally delivered through a secondary audio feature, and YouTube TV says a secondary track may contain descriptive audio or another language. If the voice describes the action in the show
Start by changing YouTube TV’s selected audio track to Primary. The exact controls vary by device and app version, but this is the commonly reported path on a TV or streaming device:

- Start the program.
- Press Down to display the playback controls. Press it again if necessary to expand them.
- Open the three-dot More menu.
- Choose Audio options or the audio-track selector.
- Select Primary, not Secondary, Descriptive, SAP, or another alternate track.
YouTube TV does not expose identical controls on every program or platform. Some shows have no alternate audio track, while others may offer descriptive audio or additional languages. The menu sequence above is a practical interface path reported in YouTube TV Community guidance, rather than a guaranteed universal layout.
On a phone or tablet
- Tap the video to reveal its controls.
- Open the three-dot menu.
- Open the audio selector, often displayed as Primary with an arrow.
- Choose the non-descriptive or Primary track.
Alternate-track availability depends on the program and device. Community guidance describes this mobile workflow, but app labels can change.
On a computer
Do not assume that every browser exposes the same audio-track menu. YouTube TV’s official accessibility help for computers documents caption controls, but does not establish one universal audio-description path for every web player.
If the voice reads menus, buttons, or channel changes
This is probably not YouTube TV’s program audio. It is more likely a screen reader or voice-guidance feature on the device. These tools are useful accessibility features, so disable them only if nobody in the household needs them.

Roku
Go to Settings → Accessibility → Screen reader and turn it off. Roku previously called this feature Audio Guide. If the shortcut is enabled, pressing the Star (*) button four times toggles the screen reader. Roku documents both the current name and shortcut in its Screen reader support guide.
Google TV
Open Settings → Accessibility → Services → TalkBack, then disable TalkBack or change its configuration. The current Google TV path is documented in Google’s accessibility help.
Apple TV
For spoken menu navigation, check Settings → Accessibility → VoiceOver. For narration describing program action, check Settings → Accessibility → Audio Descriptions, when that option is available. Apple’s labels and paths can vary by tvOS version; consult Apple’s audio-description documentation.
Fire TV
Open Settings → Accessibility and look for VoiceView or audio-description controls. Fire OS menu names vary, so treat this as the location to inspect rather than a fixed sequence.

Samsung, LG, and other smart TVs
Search the TV’s Accessibility and Audio menus for settings named Voice Guide, Audio Guidance, Screen Reader, TalkBack, VoiceOver, Audio Description, or SAP. Manufacturer labels differ substantially.
If YouTube TV says “Primary” but the narration remains
A single Primary option does not prove that the broadcast is free of descriptive narration. In some cases, narration may already be mixed into the feed supplied by a network or local affiliate, leaving YouTube TV no separate track to remove.
This becomes more likely when the problem is limited to one station, program, episode, or recording and the same device works normally elsewhere. It is still a diagnostic conclusion—not proof that every such problem originates with the broadcaster.
Run these tests:
- Try another channel.
- Try another episode or live airing of the same program.
- Compare the live broadcast with the DVR or on-demand version.
- Use the same program on a phone, computer, or another TV.
- Check whether the issue is limited to a particular local affiliate.
When available, use Choose a Version instead of immediately deleting a recording. Live, DVR, and on-demand versions may come from different files or delivery paths. A YouTube TV Community report describes a case in which narration was present in a recorded local affiliate broadcast but absent from the on-demand version. That report is useful evidence of a possible failure mode, not an official guarantee.

Try these fixes in order
- Set the program audio to Primary. This is the shortest fix for a selected descriptive or secondary track.
- Test another channel. If the voice disappears, the issue may be tied to the original program or feed.
- Test another device. If the voice follows the program, suspect its audio feed. If it follows one device across multiple apps, suspect the device’s screen reader.
- Check accessibility settings. Turn off Screen reader, TalkBack, VoiceOver, VoiceView, Voice Guide, or a similar feature if it is reading interface elements.
- Try another version. Choose an on-demand copy or another listed version when available.
- Use 5.1 audio as a diagnostic. In YouTube TV, open your account avatar, choose Settings, and turn 5.1 audio off. YouTube TV says enabling 5.1 can turn off a secondary-audio selection that may contain descriptive audio or additional languages. This changes surround-sound behavior and is not a universal cure.
- Restart the device and reopen YouTube TV. This can clear a stuck setting, but it cannot remove narration embedded in a broadcaster’s feed.
Why only one show, channel, or recording may be affected
Audio-description availability is dependent on the program and feed. A local station may carry an alternate audio stream for some network programs but not others. Affiliates can also have different routing or encoding problems. YouTube TV distributes the channel feed; it does not necessarily create the descriptive narration.
That is why a one-channel pattern matters. If your device’s menus and other apps are silent, while one local broadcast narrates every scene, changing the TV or Roku screen reader will not solve the underlying problem. Conversely, if every app announces selections, the local channel is probably unrelated.
Audio description, captions, and screen readers are different

Turning off captions will not stop a spoken description, and changing the audio track will not normally stop a screen reader from announcing menus. YouTube TV documents captions separately in its accessibility help.

- the channel and, if applicable, the local affiliate;
- the program title, episode, and air date;
- the approximate timestamp when narration occurs;
- your device and operating system or app version, if known;
- whether the player offered Primary and Secondary audio;
- whether the issue affected live TV, DVR, on-demand viewing, or more than one format;
- whether the same program behaved the same way on another device.
This information helps separate an account or app problem from a device setting and a channel-feed problem. If the issue is clearly limited to a local station, the station may also need to investigate the feed it is delivering.
YouTube TV supports a broad range of platforms, including Roku, Apple TV, Google TV, Fire TV, Android TV, Xbox, and selected smart TVs, but requirements and interface behavior vary. Its supported-devices guidance is the appropriate place to check platform-specific compatibility.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is YouTube TV itself narrating the show?
Sometimes YouTube TV is playing a selected secondary audio track, but a device screen reader or the broadcaster’s feed can produce the same symptom. Identify whether the voice describes the story or reads the interface before changing settings.
How do I turn off SAP on YouTube TV?
Open the program’s audio selector and choose Primary instead of Secondary, SAP, Descriptive, or another alternate track. If Primary still contains narration, the description may be embedded in the channel feed.

It may change which secondary-audio choices are available, but it is only a diagnostic step. Turn it off under YouTube TV’s account avatar → Settings → 5.1 audio; this also changes surround-sound behavior.
Is audio description the same as closed captioning?
No. Audio description is spoken narration of visual action. Closed captions are text displayed on screen.
