However, Roku generally has no required monthly or annual platform fee after you purchase and activate compatible hardware. You can install Prime Video on Roku, but Amazon—not Roku—usually controls your Prime membership, content access, and direct billing.
Roku and Amazon Prime are separate products
The confusion comes from treating several different services as one. A Roku device is hardware: a streaming stick, box, Roku TV, or soundbar with streaming features. Amazon Prime is a paid Amazon membership that includes access to eligible Prime Video content, among other benefits.
A Roku account is used to activate and manage the device. It is not an Amazon Prime benefit, and Roku says it does not charge account, activation, or customer-support fees.
The Roku Channel is yet another product. It is Roku’s streaming service, offering free, ad-supported movies, shows, live channels, and Roku Originals, alongside optional premium subscriptions. It is not the same as Prime Video.

Does Roku have a monthly fee?
Roku says there is no extra monthly or annual device fee after purchase and setup. That does not make every service on Roku free. Roku is a platform through which you can access a mixture of:
- Free, ad-supported streaming services
- Paid streaming subscriptions
- Premium channel add-ons
- Live-TV services
- Movie rentals and digital purchases
Roku may ask you to add a payment method to your account. According to Roku’s support explanation, this can make optional trials, subscriptions, rentals, and purchases easier. Adding a payment method alone does not subscribe you to Amazon Prime or automatically create a paid Roku plan. Still, read trial and renewal screens carefully.
Is Prime Video free on Roku?
The Prime Video app can be installed on a compatible Roku device, but installing it does not make all Prime Video content free.
What you can watch depends on the Amazon account you use and the title’s status. A program may be:
- Included with an eligible Amazon Prime membership
- Available through a separate Prime Video subscription
- Part of a paid Prime Video Channel
- Available only to rent or buy
- Temporarily available through a promotion or trial
- Unavailable because licensing or regional availability has changed
Amazon’s U.S. Prime page describes Prime Video as a membership benefit and currently describes limited ads in the standard Prime Video experience. In March 2026, Amazon announced Prime Video Ultra, an optional ad-free upgrade priced at $4.99 per month in the announcement. It said the upgrade did not change the cost of Amazon Prime membership. Confirm availability and checkout terms in your Amazon account before subscribing.

In other words, “available on Prime Video” does not necessarily mean “included with Prime,” and “free to install on Roku” does not mean “free to watch.”
How to watch Prime Video on a Roku device
Menu names can vary by Roku device, language, and Roku OS version, but the usual process is:
- Press Home on the Roku remote.
- Open the Streaming Store, Channel Store, or the current equivalent.
- Search for Prime Video.
- Select the official Prime Video app.
- Choose Add app or Add channel.
- Open Prime Video after installation.
- Sign in with the Amazon account that has the relevant Prime Video entitlement.
- If an activation code appears, follow the on-screen Amazon activation instructions.
Prime Video’s availability on Roku is confirmed in the Roku Channel Store. Older Roku hardware may eventually lose support for newer apps or features, so compatibility should be checked for the specific model.

Who bills you for Prime Video?
The device you use to watch a service is not necessarily the company billing you. Roku says subscriptions purchased directly from providers such as Amazon Prime Video are managed by those providers.

If you see an unexpected charge
- A charge labeled Amazon should be investigated through Amazon memberships, orders, or Prime Video subscriptions.
- A charge labeled Roku, Roku for [service], or The Roku Channel should be checked in Roku account purchase history.
- If the charge does not appear in Roku history, it may have been purchased directly through the streaming provider.
Also check whether another household member used a different email address or started a second subscription through a different platform. A Roku account and an Amazon account can use different email addresses.
Is The Roku Channel the same as Prime Video?
No. The Roku Channel is operated by Roku, while Prime Video is operated by Amazon.

Seeing a program in a Roku search result or inside a Prime Video interface does not by itself establish that the program is included at no additional cost.
Can you use Roku without Amazon Prime?
Yes. Amazon Prime is optional. You can use Roku to watch The Roku Channel’s free programming, other free ad-supported apps, news and public-media services, and paid services that are unrelated to Amazon.

Likewise, you can use Prime Video without Roku. Prime Video is also available through other compatible televisions, streaming devices, game consoles, mobile apps, web browsers, and supported platforms. Roku is one way to put Prime Video on a television; it is not required for an Amazon Prime membership.

Assuming a Roku bought on Amazon is included with Prime
Buying Roku hardware from Amazon—even with Prime shipping or other shopping benefits—does not make the device part of the Prime membership.
Assuming every Prime Video title is included
Look for labels indicating that a title is included with Prime. A title can appear in the Prime Video catalog while requiring a rental, purchase, or separate channel subscription.
Starting a trial without checking renewal details
Before starting a Prime, channel, or ad-free trial, note the end date, renewal price, billing company, and cancellation location. A free introductory period may automatically become paid unless canceled under the service’s terms.
Subscribing twice
The same service can be purchased directly from its provider, through Roku, through Amazon Prime Video Channels, or through another platform such as Apple. Check existing account billing pages before starting a new trial.

Contacting the wrong company
Roku may not be able to cancel or refund an Amazon-billed subscription. Start with the company named on the charge and use that account’s subscription-management page.
What to do if Prime Video does not work on Roku
- Confirm that the Roku is connected to the internet.
- Check for pending Roku system or app updates.
- Restart the Roku device.
- Remove and reinstall the Prime Video app if the problem continues.
- Confirm that you are using the Amazon account with the Prime membership, rental, purchase, or channel subscription.
- Check Amazon’s Prime Video membership and purchase history if a title is locked.
- Verify whether the title is included, rented, purchased, or part of a separate channel.
- Contact the billing provider shown on the charge for payment or cancellation problems.
Exact update and reset menus vary across Roku models and software versions, so use the labels shown on your device rather than relying on an old menu guide.
Is Roku worth buying if you already have Amazon Prime?
Roku can be useful if your television lacks a supported Prime Video app, if you want a dedicated streaming interface, or if you regularly switch among several services. It does not replace Amazon Prime, make other subscriptions free, or consolidate every service into one bill.
You may not need a Roku device if your smart TV already runs Prime Video and the other apps you use reliably. A Roku is also a separate hardware purchase, and its value depends on your TV, internet connection, preferred apps, and tolerance for advertising.
For hardware options, consult the current Roku product pages. For Prime membership details, use Amazon’s official Prime page. Prices, trials, content rights, and device compatibility can change, so do not rely on older price lists or catalog claims.
Bottom line
Amazon Prime does not give you a free Roku device. Roku hardware is normally purchased separately, but Roku says the platform itself has no required monthly or annual fee after setup. Prime Video can be installed on Roku, with Amazon controlling the membership and direct billing. The content you watch may be included with Prime, ad-supported, rented, purchased, or tied to a separate channel subscription.
