What is a Twitch raid?
A Twitch raid is Twitch’s built-in way to send viewers from one live channel to another, usually when the first streamer is ending a broadcast. The channel ending its stream is the sender; the channel receiving the audience is the destination.
A raid is a handoff, not a permanent redirect or transfer of ownership. Viewers who participate are taken to the destination during the raid, but a raid does not guarantee follows, subscriptions, donations, watch time, reciprocal exposure, or revenue for the recipient. Twitch’s raid documentation describes the feature and its normal viewer flow.
What you need before starting
- A live destination: Confirm that the other channel is still broadcasting.
- The correct channel name: Check the spelling carefully, especially if you are copying it from another app.
- Compatible content: Consider the destination’s language, category, tone, moderation style, and age suitability.
- A short announcement: Tell viewers where you are going and how you would like them to say hello.
- Moderation readiness: If you expect a large audience, make sure your moderators and chat settings are ready.
Twitch says raids are available to creators regardless of Affiliate or Partner status. The streamer or a channel editor can start one, although permissions and interface details can vary with account settings and future Twitch changes. See Twitch’s current help page for platform-specific rules.

How to raid someone on Twitch
- Announce the raid. Tell viewers that your stream is ending, name the destination, and give them a simple greeting to use.
- Open your own channel chat. The command must be entered in the chat of the channel sending the raid.
- Enter the command:
/raid channelnameFor example, if the destination is
twitchpresents, you would enter/raid twitchpresents. Replace that example with the exact name of the live channel you selected. - Review the raid notice. Twitch displays a prominent or pinned message with a countdown. Viewers can choose to leave before the raid begins.
- Confirm the launch. After the initial countdown, Twitch enables Start Raid Now. Click it to launch the raid. Twitch’s documentation describes an initial countdown of 10 seconds and an automatic start if the streamer neither cancels nor launches the raid during the available window. The exact presentation and labels may vary by localization and account interface.
- Join the destination. Go to the receiving channel, greet the streamer, and help your viewers understand the context without flooding the chat.
The destination channel receives a chat notification identifying the sender and the number of raiders. Twitch’s localized raid guidance documents the countdown, confirmation control, and cancellation command.
How to find a channel to raid
You can choose a destination manually or use Twitch’s raid tools. In the Creator Dashboard, look for the Raid Channel quick action or equivalent control. From there, browse or search suggested live channels, preview a candidate where available, and confirm your choice.
Twitch documentation also describes opening the raid browser with:
/raidbrowserDepending on the interface, the browser can show channel names, titles, categories, viewer counts, thumbnails, stream duration, tags, and filters for recommended channels, followed channels, the same category, channels that recently raided you, events, and channels of a similar or smaller size. Exact dashboard labels can change, so use Twitch’s raid-browser documentation as a reference rather than assuming every account has the same layout.

A similar or somewhat smaller channel may offer viewers a more meaningful opportunity to interact, but that is etiquette and judgment—not a Twitch requirement.

How to cancel a Twitch raid
Cancel a raid while the countdown is still running if you selected the wrong channel, the destination went offline, or you notice unsuitable content.
- Click Cancel in the pinned raid message; or
- Enter
/unraidin your channel chat.
Once the raid has launched, you cannot use the raid control to pull viewers back retroactively. Twitch documents /unraid as a countdown cancellation method.
How viewers join or leave a raid
Viewers normally see a pinned raid message showing the sender and destination. They can leave before the countdown ends. Viewers who are already watching may be included automatically, while the interface may also offer a Join control during the countdown. A viewer who leaves may be able to rejoin if that control is still available.

For that reason, say “participating viewers” rather than promising that every person watching will arrive.
Viewers who open the sender’s page after the raid has begun are documented as continuing to see the sender’s stream rather than being redirected. Twitch can change how this transition works.

How to raid from mobile
On mobile, the practical method is to open your channel chat and enter:
/raid channelnameTwitch documentation supports starting a raid from mobile with the command. The raid-browser experience is different: Twitch’s localized help pages have stated that the browser may be unavailable in the mobile app. App releases, regions, languages, and account interfaces can change, so use the command if you cannot find a raid-browser button. Raid etiquette
- Announce the destination before launching.
- Tell viewers the destination’s name and category.
- Use a short, non-spammy greeting, such as “DocumentaryTube raid—hello from our stream!”
- Join the destination yourself.
- Stay for a few minutes when practical.
- Introduce your community without repeatedly pasting the same message.
- Respect the recipient’s rules and moderation preferences.
- Do not pressure viewers to follow, subscribe, donate, or remain.
- Never use a raid to dump disruptive viewers on another streamer or turn the handoff into a joke at the recipient’s expense.
A raid can introduce two communities, but the recipient does not owe you a follow, subscription, thank-you, or return raid. Twitch’s educational guidance recommends encouraging viewers to say hello and spending at least a little time in the destination stream.
What to do if you receive an unwanted raid
A large raid is not automatically abusive. Treat a welcome raid differently from a coordinated harassment attempt, then use moderation tools if the incoming chat becomes disruptive.
- Enable Follower-Only Chat temporarily.
- Use Emote-Only Chat when appropriate.
- Turn on or strengthen AutoMod and make your chat rules visible.
- Add trusted moderators before expecting large raids.
- Timeout or ban individual accounts that break your rules.
- Report harassment or abusive conduct to Twitch.
- Use Twitch’s Stop Raids for 1 Hour quick action when necessary.
- Review incoming-raid settings, including available viewer-count, account-age, and related restrictions.
These tools primarily control incoming raids or chat interaction; they do not necessarily prevent people from watching your stream. Twitch explains these controls in its harassment and chat-safety guidance.

How to see recent raids
If you receive a raid, look for Recent Raids in the Stream Manager activity feed or in chat settings and the chat moderation menu. Twitch’s labels vary by language and interface. The activity feed can help you identify repeat supporters and thank them appropriately.

Raid, host, recommendation, or collaboration?
Choose a raid when you want to hand off the viewers currently participating at the end of a live broadcast. A channel recommendation or social post is better when the other creator is offline or you simply want to suggest their content without moving viewers. A Discord recommendation works for an asynchronous message, while a collaborative stream is better when both creators want to share one live event.
Hosting and raiding are not interchangeable. A raid is an active audience handoff with a countdown and destination. Twitch has also described viewers who do not join a raid as being shown the sender’s channel while the destination is hosted automatically, but that historical explanation should not be treated as proof that current hosting controls work exactly like raids. Can anyone raid on Twitch?
Twitch’s current help documentation says creators can use raids regardless of Affiliate or Partner status. Individual permissions and interface availability can still depend on account settings and Twitch’s current platform rules.
Can a moderator start a raid?
A channel editor can start a raid through chat according to Twitch’s documented procedure. Confirm the editor’s permissions if the command is rejected.

Can viewers decline a raid?
Yes. Viewers can leave during the countdown, and the join experience may differ by device or viewing client.
What happens if the target channel is offline?
The raid is not useful if the destination is no longer live. Cancel the pending raid and choose another suitable live channel.
Can I stop raids on my channel?
Yes. Twitch documents incoming-raid controls, including Stop Raids for 1 Hour and configurable restrictions. You can also use follower-only chat, AutoMod, and moderation actions when unwanted visitors create problems.
Does a raid guarantee new followers?
No. It can introduce your community to another streamer, but follows, subscriptions, donations, and reciprocal exposure are not guaranteed.
