Kier Eagan matters because Lumon makes its founder the sacred authority in the innies’ world. With their memories of life outside work cut off, the severed employees have little personal history to rely on; Lumon supplies one through Kier’s teachings, the Eagan legacy and rituals such as the Perpetuity wing. The result can offer meaning and identity while also reinforcing the company’s authority. The show has not yet fully explained how Kier’s doctrine began or what he privately believed.
Why do the innies revere Kier?
Severance divides an employee’s memories between work and personal life, leaving an innie with no ordinary access to the relationships and experiences that shape the outie’s identity. Lumon is therefore more than a workplace to its innies: it is the whole world they know, and the company controls much of the history and language available within it. Apple’s series description outlines the memory division at the premise’s center.
In a June 2024 interview with PBS’s On Story, creator Dan Erickson said the Perpetuity wing feels “like a church” to the innies. Its wax figures of the Eagans commemorate the people who, from the innies’ perspective, created everything they know. Erickson described the founders as “deified in a way.” The comparison explains why Kier can command reverence without the innies having the independent biography or wider social world through which to assess his legacy.
What is Kier’s religion in Severance?
It is best understood as a religion-like company culture, not as a fully explained real-world faith. Lumon preserves Kier’s sayings and teachings, marks the Eagan family as extraordinary, and gives employees rituals and symbols through which to encounter that history. Those elements make the founder’s authority feel sacred inside the company.

- Severance: Season 1 [DVD]
The distinction matters: the series depicts devotion and doctrine, but the available story has not provided a complete account of the religion’s origins or established exactly what Kier himself believed. Erickson’s church comparison describes how the Eagans function for the innies; it does not settle whether Kier was sincere, cynical or something more complicated.
What are the Four Tempers?
The Four Tempers are part of Kier’s doctrine and mythology. Season 2 returns to them in “Woe’s Hollow,” and Erickson said he wanted to begin probing where Kier’s idea of the Tempers came from. He imagined that it might have grown out of an experience in Kier’s life.

That is a clue about the story the creators wanted to explore, not a definitive explanation of the doctrine or proof of Kier’s private convictions. Apple’s episode listing identifies “Woe’s Hollow” as Season 2, Episode 4.
Does Lumon believe in Kier, or use him to control employees?
The show supports both a personal and an institutional reading, but not a definitive verdict about Lumon’s leaders. For the innies, Kier’s teachings can supply a moral vocabulary and a shared history where their severed lives offer little else. That meaning need not be false simply because Lumon has created the environment in which it takes hold.

At the same time, a founder whose teachings define the workplace’s values can strengthen the institution’s rules and hierarchy. Reading Kier’s veneration as a tool of control is a reasonable interpretation of Lumon’s power over its employees’ world, but the evidence does not establish that the company invented the faith solely as a cynical scheme. Nor does the show’s exploration of the Four Tempers, by itself, resolve how much of Kier’s mythology is sincere belief, corporate tradition or both.

The series has begun examining the origin of the Four Tempers, but the creator’s comments do not amount to a full biography or a final account of Kier’s beliefs. The important distinction is between what the show makes clear—his legacy is treated as sacred by the innies—and what remains open: how the doctrine began, what Kier meant by it, and how much Lumon’s present-day leadership believes.

For viewers, Kier’s importance lies in that overlap. He is both a founder whose teachings organize Lumon’s culture and a near-mythic figure presented to people whose world has been deliberately narrowed to the company.
